We don’t always get great landscape photography conditions. Bad light can be exploited though by using techniques such as long exposure and black and white photography. Especially when combined and edited using Silver Efex Pro from the NIK collection. Workshops - http://bit.ly/WorkshopsFirstMan Instagram - http://bit.ly/InstaFirstMan Get a FREE trial of Adobe Lightroom CC and Photoshop - http://bit.ly/AdobeFirstMan In this video I head into the depths of the Yorkshire Dales for a day of landscape photography in some less than ideal conditions. It’s easy to imagine photographing a beautiful landscape in great weather. It’s warm, the sun is about to light up the evening sky and life is good. It’s an appealing experience that we chase over and over again. On the other hand amazing images can be captured in rough, stormy weather with unique conditions. But what about those grey days in between? Here in the UK we have a lot of them. They can be bleak and getting off the sofa to go out and take pictures is not an obvious choice. However, there are great shots to be captured in all conditions if we are willing to get creative. One effective method to make the most of grey conditions and flat light is to use long exposure photography. It creates interest by smoothing out clouds and water and creating an ethereal feel. I have talked in depth about long exposure before: See here - https://youtu.be/vKAu0IluyR4 Whilst grey conditions produce flat light it does not necessarily mean it is bad. An extreme long exposure of over two minutes essentially turns textures of the sky and water into smooth tones. It creates new possibilities with composition and the soft light adds to the overall fine art photography feel of the image. Combining this with a black and white conversion can add to the image even more and create something unique on a day when no other photographers were out. Black and white images can be post processed much more heavily than colour images which creates extra creative possibilities, especially with contrast. Using Silver Efex Pro from the NIK collection is a brilliant way to edit black and white pictures. Whilst this video is not a silver Efex pro tutorial I go through the edit of the image I capture to show how the app can make your black and white images pop. My video photography tutorials, gear reviews and landscape vlogs are designed to entertain and document how I go about capturing my work. If it provides landscape photography tips and inspiration along the way then please share it with your friends so more people can benefit from the content. If you enjoyed this photography vlog I would really appreciate it if you subscribed to the channel so you can come along for the journey.

http://www.ColeThompsonPhotography.com The Lone Man Something unusual happens when a person stands on the edge of the world and stares outward. They become very still and you can almost see their thoughts as they ponder something much greater than themselves: Where did I come from? What is my purpose? What does it all mean? What is beyond, the beyond? Do I make a difference? Is there more? At that moment they are The Lone Man, alone with their thoughts about matters much greater than themselves. People are affected by this time of meditation and they often vow to make changes in their lives. But these commitments are usually short lived as weighty matters are replaced with more immediate concerns: Should I eat at McDonalds or Burger King and should I try that new green milkshake?

I love men who have Character, and it is best captured in black & white photography! Richard Armitage, Tom Hiddleston, and Michael Fassbender (from what I've gathered) have amazing personalities and are perfect Gentlemen! Allow me to expound a little on the word "Gentlemen", meaning - "A chivalrous, courteous, honorable man." think about that the next time you see them in an interview and you'll see what I mean. :) I hope you enjoy this small video I've made in Honor of these three Unique human beings, who have decided to share their talents and give up a normal life for our entertainment! A collection of 35 dramatic black and white photographs taken along the coastlines of the UK, Guernsey, France, Iceland and Japan. Presented in a intimate 7x7" (18x18cm) book available in a choice of either softcover or hardback. I feel drawn to the waters edge and the relationship between the soft ephemeral elements and the contrasting cold hard man made lines and structures. Along much of the coastline man has left its mark, whether trying to defend against the awesome power of the sea or to use it to our advantage for pleasure and commerce. Working at the extremes of the day and using long exposure techniques allows me to create an dream like version of the truth, not always visible to the human eye. Each photograph is a passage of time, recorded as a single two dimensional image, a document, a moment in space and time.

When you create a black and white photograph, you create something that is abstract and strikingly real at the same time. Black and white photography is strange that way. It is perhaps this abstractness that makes black and white images so intriguing and timeless. -“Color is everything, black and white is more.” – Dominic Rouse -“Black and white is abstract; color is not. Most often I will envisage a mono image at the time of shooting knowing that the scene in front of me will look better in black and white. Black and white works well when the tone of the image is more important than the actual colours. Some images can look messy in full colour but will look beautiful in black and white due to the really interesting tones. Black and white processing can also be used to rescue images taken with high ISO in extremely low light. The noise introduced by the high ISO can look very pleasing in mono offering a look similar to ‘film grain’. Once you have shot and processed your black and white photography you can potentially take it to the next level by adding a colour toner to the image. Sepia is one such tone. This colour was introduced from a particular chemical used in the dark room that increased the longevity and archival properties of a photography. Adobe Lightroom offers the ability to add tone to your black and white photography using the split toning panel. Using this you can add colour to the highlights and the shadows independently, hence split toning. Another method is to use the Google NIK Collection that offers a series of finishing toners that add a full array of toners that mimic those that were historically popular in the darkroom. In the video I show you how you can easily add black and white toners using Adobe Lightroom and the Google NIK Collection. Download both programs and have a go adding tones to your images to see what you think. Let me know if you agree and this can take your black and white photography to the next level. https://www.firstmanphotography.com/tutorials/black-and-white-photography-toners

This is called LOW KEY LIGHTING. The concept is simple. All you have to do is set your exposure so that your image is completely black. Do this without even touching the flash. Once you do this, you can add the flash in. Try to put the light close to your subject, and have a narrow beam to avoid spill into the background. In this video, I start off with one flash for a dramatic look, and add a second flash for more separation. Read more at: http://www.camcrunch.com/2013/02/low-... http://www.silberstudios.tv Digital photography is an amazing medium in which photographers can shoot their pictures and then determine if the picture will be shown in color or black and white. Andy Katz, a forty year photography veteran, shares his experience and provides tips for shooting in both black and white as well as color, on the Marc Silber Show. For professional photographers, the question boils down to "is the color helping or hindering the photograph?" If the color is hindering the beauty or quality of the photo, then use the Silver Efex Pro software to convert the photograph to black and white this works extremely well because you can't tell the original photo was shot in color. Low key photography is great in studio for portrait photos but is also amazing for all kinds of photography. In his latest tutorial, Ray Scott show examples of low key photography and how to create these kinds of images. He shows you some of the ways using flash and without flash. Along with high key photography, low key photography is one of the more popular techniques used in portrait photography. There are many other uses too and that is what this video is about. Looking for new ways to express oneself as a photographer is always a worthwhile goal. When in studio or in the field Ray uses Canon gear. This is a choice he made years ago knowing that he was buying into a system that he could grow into. His go to camera is the Canon EOS 6D with the second camera being a Canon 5D. Lenses used are all L series f/4 except for the 50mm macro with extender. 16-35mm f/4L, 24-105mm f/4L, and 70-200mm f/4L round out the kit which is carried about with either a Lowepro Urban Reporter 250 messenger bag for city shooting or a Lowepro Sling Bag for landscape field work. While Ray does more camera handholding than before due to the image stabilization capabilities of his various lenses, he still is a believer in using his Manfrotto carbon fibre tripod. It's light and it is sturdy. Ray is a firm believer in exposing himself to as much photography and its history as possible. By looking at other people's photos, he has gained a big appreciation of what this medium has to offer. Ray doesn't think that "copying" someone else's style is a good thing but rather feels that exposing oneself to others work can work as a teaching and inspirational tool. With this in mind, Ray has amassed a list of favorite photographers that he uses for inspiration. Some of these artistic photographers are Galen Rowell, Ansel Adams, Frans Lanting, Annie Leibovitz, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Freeman Patterson, William Neill and Richard Avedon. One of the playlists on this channel is called "neighbourhood photographer" which covers tutorials shot in urban and suburban areas. It's always a challenge to see different things of interest when you've been to an area many times yet this is the best way to create good images. You need to return to familiar locations many times. To do so, Ray often drives by car to an area but when he really wants to cover ground yet see things more clearly, he uses his bicycle…bike…and explores the given place. Whether shooting landscape, macro, portrait or abstract images, Ray always tries to be aware of his surroundings to capture the best pictures possible. Part of this workflow means he is very aware of composition and uses various tips, such as the rule of thirds, as a good starting point in composing. He also likes to break rules from time to time to add new effects to his photos. Being aware of angles, shadows, shapes, lines, textures, patterns and colours goes a long way to making good pictures. He is also a big believer in "getting out there" and shooting as much as possible as it is the only way to improve and flex one's imagination. His message is it doesn't matter if you do your photography in the city, suburbs country, mountains or by the sea, just make sure you do it and follow your artistic passion. When we take a photo, we tend to take it in color. When it comes to black-and-white photography, however, normal rules about light don’t necessarily apply. Black-and-white photography, it turns out, doesn’t care about the color of light. Or its quality. You can shoot at any time of the day (provided you watch your shadows) and get the same depth of field and the same crispness of quality. Learn how to take advantage of this technique in order take more masterful, captivating photos. Watch this video for a more in-depth explanation about black and white photography, hosted by National Geographic Photographer Joel Sartore. A short documentary on John Blackmore the British Master Photographer. John Blakemore (born 1936), is an English photographer working in landscape photography and still life. John Blakemore was born in Coventry. He discovered photography during National Service with the Royal Air Force in Tripoli in the 1950s and is self-taught. Wartime childhood experiences and Edward Steichen’s The Family of Man exhibition inspired him initially on his return home to photograph the people of Coventry and its post-war reconstruction as a freelance, working first for Black Star, and then in a variety of studios. He later became Emeritus Professor of Photography at the University of Derby, where he taught from 1970 to 2001, being influential on the younger generation

black and white fine art portrait street photography or photo journalism. we are going to see a simple technique on how to make an average portrait outstanding. Black and white is not necessarily a recipe for creating value in a photograph. Using a light-room tool to manually decrease the exposure in parts of the picture is the next step to create an interesting effect, allowing the viewer to have a clear picture with no distraction. This is a good technique to isolate the essence of the image and strip out all unnecessary details

A new book from Amherst Media by Tim Kelly. Tim Kelly is a Master Photographer whose portrait work has inspired people in the portrait photography industry since the 1980s. His work has a classic, polished quality that beautifully depicts the personality of each subject, with no gimmicks. His style is reliant on careful camera technique, flawless lighting, and an uncanny ability to coax the most flattering-possible pose from every man, woman, and child who steps in front of his camera. In this book, Tim Kelly presents 60 of his most impressive and diverse black & white portrait images of men, women, children, and groups. For each of the sixty images, readers will get a deconstructive look at every aspect of building the image, from the ground up. Kelly will discuss the creative concept behind his images and share the gear, exposure, lighting, and posing strategies he learned to create gorgeous black & white portraiture with an exquisite tonal range, beautiful, form-flattering highlights and shadows, and both refined and comfortable poses that invite the viewer to study the image frame. This book contains all of the information you need to create standout black & white portraiture–from conceptualization, to posing and lighting, to post production and printing options. Walking through the thick fog to the isolated farm at Nun's Cross, I had a feeling of unease and eeriness as the mist swirled around the building. With Foxtor Mire close by, it made me think of Conan Doyle's " Hound of the Baskervilles". http://cliftonticehurst.com Camera Gear.
