The mass Balance principle states that all matter (which is mass) is not created nor destroyed, it remain constant. Given this, we can state that all inlet, outlets, production and consumption of species for a given moment are the concept named "accumulation" of the system. The Equation of the Mass Balances that we will use in this course is: Inlet - Outlet + Production - Consumption = Accumulation In steady state processes the concept of accumulation equals zero. If there is no reaction there is no production nor consumption term; if there is no mass flowing in/out of the system boundaries then there are no inlets/outlets. The equation, depending on the type of mass balance problem, may finish in many forms. In this video I discuss "What is chemical engineering?" To put simply, in chemical engineering you design processes to transport, transform, and produce materials. Chemical engineering is much more than just working with chemicals. You have to design chemical plants, reactors, and work with the processes that go into many of the products we know of. Careers in chemical engineering include alternative energy, food production, electronics, industrial chemicals, petroleum, and more. In this video I also discuss chemistry vs chemical engineering and how to know which major may be better for you. As a chemistry major you'd dive deeper into learning chemical reactions on a smaller scale and wouldn't learn any of the engineering principles to scale these reactions. Simply put, if you want to work solely in a lab, and work with chemical reactions, then you might want to major in chemistry or biochemistry. However, if you want to take those reactions, but figure out how to make them happen on a large scale, so they can go out to consumers or businesses, then a major in chemical engineering would be better for you. There are many types of classification of processes. The most used in chemical engineering are the following: Open System: inlet/outlet of materials to system Closed System: no inlet/outlet of materials Isolated System: no inlet/outlet of materials; no inlet/outlet of energy to the system Other type of classification: Isobaric system: Constant Pressure Isothermal system: Constant temperature Isochoric system: Constant Volume Adiabatic system: No heat exchange Q=0 Knowing what kind of process you have helps to establish "rules" or "laws" which make easier to understand and calculate the problem.
