A close-in weapon system (CIWS), often pronounced "sea-whiz", is a point-defense weapon system for detecting and destroying short-range incoming missiles and enemy aircraft which have penetrated the outer defenses, typically mounted shipboard in a naval capacity. Nearly all classes of modern warships are equipped with some kind of CIWS device. There are two types of CIWS systems. A gun-based CIWS usually consists of a combination of radars, computers, and multiple-barrel, rotary rapid-fire cannons placed on a rotating gun mount. Missile systems use infra-red, passive radar/ESM or semi-active radar terminal guidance to guide missiles to the targeted enemy aircraft or other threats. In some cases, CIWS are used on land to protect military bases. In this case, the CIWS can also protect the base from shell and rocket fire. But which one is the best in Matsimus's opinion? Russia’s Defence Ministry released footage, Tuesday, showing a US missile destroyer, the USS Gravely, coming dangerously close to the Russian patrol ship Yaroslav Mudry in the east of the Mediterranean Sea on June 17. The encroachment happened at a distance of 60-70 metres (197-230 ft) on the left side of the Russian ship. Russia’s Defence Ministry declared that the Russian vessel had not been carrying out any kind of aggressive manoeuvres in regards to the American ship, stating that there was no need for the USS Gravely to behave in such a manner. ENORMOUS iceberg close to BREAKING AWAY from Antarctica risking FOUR INCH sea rise ONE of the biggest icebergs in the world is on the broke of breaking OFF from Antarctica, after a huge crack appeared. The 5,000 square kilometre block of ice, which is one of the 10 biggest ever icebergs, could spark a four inch rise in sea levels if it rips away. Scientists noticed a large rift in the Larsen C ice shelf in Western Antarctica had expanded suddenly last month. Now they warn it is “hanging on by a thread” and could break away at any moment. While the breakaway of this iceberg will not directly cause sea levels to rise, the experts behind the study from from Project Midas – a UK-based Arctic research group – believe it could leave the entire ice shelf it is attached to vulnerable to crumbling. Project leader Professor Adrian Luckman, from Swansea University, said: "If it doesn't go in the next few months, I'll be amazed.

Air Plane Landing Very Close Of the Sea on Larnaca Airport. Larnaca International Airport (Greek: Διεθνής Aερολιμένας Λάρνακας Diethnís Aeroliménas Lárnakas; Turkish: Larnaka Uluslararası Havaalanı) (IATA: LCA, ICAO: LCLK) is an international airport located 4 km (2.5 mi) southwest of Larnaca, Cyprus. Larnaca International Airport is Cyprus' main international gateway and the larger of the country's two commercial airports, the other being Paphos International Airport on the island's southwestern coast. History: Larnaca Airport was hastily developed towards the end of 1974 after the invasion of Cyprus by Turkey on 20 July of the same year, which forced the closure of Nicosia International Airport. The site on which it was built (near the Larnaca Salt Lake), had been previously used as an airfield in the 1930s and, subsequently, as a military installation by the British forces. Larnaca International opened on 8 February 1975, with only limited infrastructure facilities and a prefabricated set of buildings comprising separate halls for departures and arrivals. The first airlines to use the new airport were Cyprus Airways using Viscount 800s leased from British Midland and Olympic Airways using NAMC YS-11s. Initially, the runway at Larnaca International was too short for jet aircraft. Design: The concept architectural design of the passenger terminal was developed by French architects at Aéroports de Paris (ADP) with Sofréavia in France. Detail and Tender design was completed in Cyprus by 1998, with local architectural office Forum Architects and a large engineering team under the coordination of ADP. The design was later used as a base for the BOT projects of both Larnaca and Pafos International Airports though significant changes were made mainly on "value engineering" grounds. A large amount of controversy spurred by the local media surrounded the granting of the contract when it was put out to tender. A consortium led by BAA and Joannou & Paraskevaides (J&P) construction quickly pulled out when it did not receive assurances from the government of Cyprus that it would receive financial compensation in the event that direct flights were allowed between Northern Cyprus and the rest of the world. The contract was eventually hastily granted to the next best bidder, the French led 'Hermes' Consortium. This too, was not free of controversy, causing legal challenges by BAA and J&P, and adding further delays to a much needed project. info from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larnaca_International_Airport#History

The boat insurance people who share your passion…http://www.boatinsure.co.uk http://www.boat-zone.com/mbm Great Motorboat Tour adventurer John Boyle is an underwater film maker for National Geographic - so this compendium of the best encounters with the wildlife they met around our shores is a 'must watch' episode. John nominates the Farne Islands as his standout location - simply because of the amount of wildlife and the fact that you can get so close to it. But there's so much more to enjoy - from brilliant underwater footage of fish, sea ferns and corals to seals, dolphins and sharks as well as just some of over 180 different species of bird that can be seen around our wonderful coastline. Sponsored by leading boat insurance specialists Haven Knox-Johnston (http://www.boatinsure.co.uk) For Full Video Transcript: 31/32 – Close-up on Britain’s brilliant sea life Sponsored by Haven Knox-Johnston, the boat insurance specialist. Before setting out on our trip, the last thing I’d expected was the amount and diversity of coastal wildlife that we would see. We were amazed and surprised by the concentrations of birds on remote rocks and headlands. Healthy colonies of seals and memorable encounters with intriguing sea creatures. Valerie Galpin started the Manx Whale & Dolphin Group many years ago and has been studying closely the Isle of Man population of up to 200 Risso’s dolphins. Many of the pod had, in her words, “gone missing”, around the time we spotted these off Kinlochbervie. The clips from our film that I sent her may prove that these were members of the Manx population, taking an early season holiday in the North. The Rissos were one of three different species of dolphins that we saw on our trip. On several occasions we encountered small groups of bottlenose dolphin, and occasionally we came across large pods of common dolphins. And no-one could forget Fungi, the friendly lone male dolphin that made his home in Dingle almost thirty years ago, and who has unknowingly made a huge Fungi-watching industry. Gannets are one of the UK’s seabirds that seem to be thriving. Between March and September, Britain is in fact home to nearly 70% of the world’s breeding gannet population. The colony on Skellig is one of the most spectacular, with around 30,000 nesting pairs at the height of the season. As an underwater filmmaker, I regretted not having time to stop and dive in some of the unique locations that we passed through. I’d recommend anyone to at least put on a snorkel, and check the amazing underwater life around our coasts. Basking shark are the second biggest fish in the planet’s oceans. 2011 was a bad year for spotting basking shark – we only saw one small one in the whole of our trip. I later learnt that this was because the plankton layers on which they feed were deeper than usual. These shark are year-round residents of our coast, and are usually easy to spot in the early summer months. The chance of snorkelling with them is an unforgettable experience. It’s also surprising how often you come across whales when at sea. This was a Giant Fin Whale that we spotted in Falmouth Bay later in the season. Many cliffs and sea stacks were crammed with birdlife. But the Farne Islands where, for me, a highlight of the trip. Not only because of the massive concentrations of birds, but also how close you could get to them. Sponsored by Haven Knox-Johnston, the boat insurance specialist.

A baby sea lion mistakes me for mommy. Must have been the brown bathing suit. 7/10/12 Wow, folks! I forgot about this video for a year or so. So many of you have viewed it, and I've really enjoyed your comments. Apologies to everyone who posted and emailed questions. Thanks to my sister, I was fortunate enough to take the trip of a lifetime back in November of 2009: a National Geographic/Lindblad cruise through the Galapagos Islands. The ship accomodated 96 vacationers -- it was VERY nice and if you ever have the opportunity you should do it! On our excursions to the individual islands we were accompanied by trained Ecuadorian naturalists at all times, so I'm confident that we were behaving appropriately. We took care to keep our distance from the wildlife and were told Do Not Touch! This little guy wandered up the beach while it's mother was out getting food. It first approached some adult Sea Lions up the beach a ways who gave it the cold shoulder. Then it headed for our group, and for me in my brown swim suit. I turned 60 this year and don't mind being mistaken for a Sea Lion. It was an honest mistake. :) Those of you who want to use this clip may do so. Please be nice. Kristin

Two US warships sailed near islands claimed by China in the South China Sea on Monday, a move likely to anger Beijing at a time of tense relations between the countries with the world’s two biggest economies. A US official said two guided-missile destroyers travelled within 12 nautical miles of Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands. The operation was the latest attempt to counter what Washington claims is Beijing’s efforts to limit freedom of navigation in waters where Chinese, Japanese and some southeast Asian navies operate. It was the second such mission by the US this year. In early January, the destroyer USS McCampbell sailed within 12 nautical miles of the Paracel Island chain.

A deadly disease has been wiping out West Coast starfish for more than a year. One place that has held off the disease the longest is Alaska. Researchers recently traveled there to search for new clues. “Almost everywhere we’ve looked in the last year, we’ve seen catastrophic losses of sea stars,” says Pete Raimondi, a biology professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who has been studying an alarming epidemic that’s been killing starfish by the millions. Raimondi’s team has been tracking the spread of the disease. They noticed signs of the disease in Sitka in the summer of 2013, but there hasn’t been a mass die-off until now. Scientists believe that warming water or an infectious pathogen, like a bacteria or virus, may be to blame, but no one knows for certain. 미•중 무역분쟁 속 美함정 2척, '영유권 분쟁' 남중국해 항해 Two U.S. warships have sailed close to islands claimed by China in the disputed South China Sea - a move that could negatively impact on-going trade talks between the two nations. For more on this and other news around the world we turn to our Ro Aram… Aram… what's the latest? Well Mark… the USS Spruance and USS Preble conducted what the U.S. Navy called a freedom of navigation operation within 22 kilometers of the Spratly Islands on Monday. A spokesman for the 7th Fleet said the mission was conducted "in order to challenge excessive maritime claims and preserve access to the waterways as governed by international law." Such exercises have often been carried out by the U.S. Navy and have been the cause diplomatic tensions between Washington and Beijing. China's foreign ministry issued an angry response. "Relevant activities of the U.S. warships violated China's sovereignty and damaged peace, security and good order in relevant waters. China expresses firm opposition and dissatisfaction to this." The spokesperson also demanded the U.S. stop what she called its "provocative actions," adding he country will take necessary actions to protect state sovereignty. Beijing's warning came as officials from both sides were in the Chinese capital for a new round of trade talks this week. It remains to be seen if Monday's operation will impact the negotiations. China claims most of the energy-rich South China Sea, as do several of its neighbors, including the Philippines, Vietnam, and Taiwan. China's claim was largely discredited by an international arbitration tribunal three years ago, but Beijing has rejected the ruling. The Chinese military has since bolstered its presence in the region, deploying military hardware and other defense systems. Swimming with Sea Turtles: Beautiful Surprises Underwater Up close footage of some divers swimming near a loggerhead sea turtle in the Atlantic. The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), or loggerhead, is an oceanic turtle distributed throughout the world. It is a marine reptile, belonging to the family Cheloniidae. The average loggerhead measures around 90 cm (35 in) long when fully grown, although larger specimens of up to 280 cm (110 in) have been discovered. The adult loggerhead sea turtle weighs approximately 135 kg (298 lb), with the largest specimens weighing in at more than 450 kg (1,000 lb). The skin ranges from yellow to brown in color, and the shell is typically reddish-brown. No external differences in gender are seen until the turtle becomes an adult, the most obvious difference being the adult males have thicker tails and shorter plastrons than the females. They are primarily carnivores, munching jellyfish, conchs, crabs, and even fish, but will eat seaweed and sargassum occasionally. Mature females will often return, sometimes over thousands of miles, to the beach where they hatched to lay their eggs. Worldwide population numbers are unknown, but scientists studying nesting populations are seeing marked decreases despite endangered species protections. Our time had run out in the marina in Santa Marta but the light southerly winds didn’t sound good for sailing to Panama. So instead we decided to sail to Cartagena and wait for a better forecast. The passage was quite eventful with sailing across the outlet of the big Magdalena river, lots of debris in the water and passing over an underwater wall in the dark. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. WANT MORE? OK so I decided to change the description now in 2012 to kind of reflect the trend of this video. People are split on whether or not this was close to a collision! The details are this I am on the USNS Supply that is currently refueling the USS Vella Gulf on our port side and the USS Shreveport was on our Starboard side and a couple minutes prior to me grabbing the camera. What happened is the broke away pulled forward and then started to drift over and crossed our bow. You can see the wake as it is on our port side. There was nothing we can do and everything was up to them. They increased speed but the problem was they went hard to starboard and that was a mistake they should have got the speed up and then turned. This was extremely close and we came within approx 40-60 feet of them and although that isn't inches and to most people that isn't close but with these types of vessels and under the circumstances it was very close. So think of those factors when you watch this video.

Closed Sea reveals the untold story of the endangered migrants who attempted to escape from Libya to Italy during the 2011 war, only to be returned to the hands of Gaddafi as a result of a prior agreement signed between Berlusconi and Gaddafi. During a perilous journey by boat from Libya to Italy, our protagonists become adrift, facing near certain death on the waves. A sighting, and subsequent rescue, by the Italian Navy cause scenes of unbridled joy and celebration though they were to be short lived. Want to watch more full-length Documentaries? The Wife has been adapted by Swedish director Björn Runge from Meg Wolitzer’s 2003 novel. The plot itself is a tad contrived and not always convincing but the performances power the film, giving it an emotional grip that doesn’t let up. Joan, played masterfully by Glenn Close, resembles a calm sea that has tectonic plates shifting and a tsunami brewing beneath the surface. Have you subscribed to Film Companion yet?
