Oracle SQL Tutorial 7 - Normalization - Database Design Primer 4

20:38
The database normal forms are used to normalize a database. What does it mean to normalize a database? It means to break it up into multiple tables to prevent redundant, conflicting, and bad data. The three normal forms are 1nf, 2nf, and 3nf. These stand for first normal form, second normal form, and third normal form. There are other normal forms, such as Boyce Codd normal form (BCNF), but the first 3 normal forms are the ones that are really important to know. The normal forms depend on one another. It is kind of like a ladder. In order to be in 2nd normal form, you must first be in first normal form. In order to be in 3rd normal form, you must first be in 2nd normal form. First normal form is all about individuality and giving data its space. Each column must be atomic...that is, in the smallest indivisible piece. Each value for the column must also only contain one value. To fix first normal form when you have a column violation, break the column into multiple columns. To fix first normal form when you have data violation, break the column into a new table and have a column that references the old table. Second normal form is all about partial dependencies. A partial dependency is when a column only depends on part of the primary key. This is often seen when you have an intermediary table in a many to many relationship (as a reminder, we break up many to many relationships into one to many relationships with intermediary tables in between). The solution to get rid of partial dependencies is to put the data in the table to where the column depends entirely on the key. If you do not already have a table that fits the rule, you can consider creating one. Third normal form is all about transitive dependencies. This is when a column in a table depends on another column instead of depending solely on the primary key. The solution to this is to take the column that is directly dependent on the primary key and bring it into its own table. Then, you can use foreign keys to connect the tables. This video concluded with a noble speech on how database design is very subjective. Thus is so because as we normalize more and more, the design becomes more and more complex. If we get to the point where we have hundreds of tables for a relatively small database, we can really hurt performance and increase risk of mistakes. Hopefully this video was helpful to everyone. Oracle SQL Tutorial 8 - Indexes - Database Design Primer 5

11:06
The concept of an index is extremely important when managing a database. An index has the power of making your database very quick or it has the power to bog down your update, delete, and insert statements. The trick is to find a good balance. You will want to index any columns that are used continually in a select or a join. By default, all primary keys are indexed as well as any columns with the UNIQUE column attribute. I suggest you consider adding an index to your foreign keys as these will often be used in joins as well. You can actually create an index on a group of columns. This will allow you to search for data and return multiple columns. This is known as a composite index. There are many other things to database design...much more than we have covered. I have decided I will cover these as we go so that we can start applying what we learn practically. Database Design 39 - Indexes (Clustered, Nonclustered, Composite Index)

13:28
This video covers the basics of indexes. Indexing is an extremely important step of database design. Without Indexes database queries can take a substantial amount of time and hog system resources. The main two classifications of indexes are clustered and non-clustered indexes. Clustered indexes are usually the primary key and determine how the data is actually stored in the table. These are the fastest and most effective. Non-clustered indexes sort a reference to data that is still fast but doesn't actually determine how the data is structured. The best tip I can give you is to use indexes but don't over use them. Having loads of indexes on columns that are barely ever in a where clause or join can bog down the database. This is because every time the table is updated the index must also be updated! When a database looks through a table for certain where conditions on a column that does not have an index, it does an entire table scan. This is not a good practice for large databases (or even small databases but not as bad). With an index the database will do an index seek and quickly find the data you are looking for. Composite indexes consist of two or more columns within one index. Use these when you plan on using the two columns together for a database query WHERE clause. Oracle SQL Tutorial 1 - Intro to Oracle Database

10:18
As illustrated in the video, Oracle Database is a program designed to hold lots of information, or data. There are all kinds of different databases and they all have their uses. Some of the most common ones are MySQL, SQL Server, Sybase, and MongoDB. All of these have different uses. The differences will be easier to understand after you learn more about each kind of database. We did not discuss it much in the video, but if you are wondering what “SQL” means in the title, it stands for structured query language. Structured query language is a human readable computer language that is used to tell databases to do things. We will discuss SQL and Oracle SQL Developer more in future videos. Databases are better than spreadsheets because they allow multiple users at one time, different levels of access given to users, recovery options and transactions, and it is more protected from hacking and malicious destruction. Programming languages often have very useful functions or methods that can be used to communicate to a database and therefore they are a naturally good option for the back end of programs. This course will go over all of the major parts of database programming using Oracle SQL. We will be using Oracle 11g, but these videos should still work with other versions, including the most recent 12c. Q and A ~~~~~~ How much does Oracle cost? The full enterprise edition costs thousands. They have other versions for less and they even have a FREE VERSION! This is known as the XE version (eXpress Edition). That is the one we will be using. How long does it take to learn SQL? You can learn all of the basics and be an efficient beginner database developer in only about a month of practice. To become an intermediate it can take anywhere from an additional 3 - 6 months with a only a few hours of studying and practicing each day. How can I learn SQL faster? Take notes and actually mess around with making your own database. Watch these videos until you understand the concepts within them, read articles and books that teach in more depth. Database Design 33 - Cardinality

07:35
Donate!: http://bit.ly/DonateCTVM2. Cardinality is the maximum number of connections a row of one table can have with row(s) of another table. This is basically just a fancy word to describe the two options: 1, or many. Designing the cardinality shows us whether the relationship is a one-to-one relationship or a one-to-many relationship. In the event of a logical many-to-many relationship, the cardinality would be best designed as two separate one-to-many relationships with the intermediary table in the middle (see my video over many-to-many relationships). Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) Tutorial - Part 1

06:58
Learn how to create an Entity Relationship Diagram in this tutorial. We provide a basic overview of ERDs and then gives step-by-step training on how to make an ER diagram with correct cardinality. Entity Relationship Diagrams are comprised of 3 main categories: entities, attributes, and relationships. Entities are objects or concepts that are associated with important data—like a customer, order, or product. Attributes represent properties or traits of an entity, such as a customer’s phone number or home address. Relationships demonstrate the link between entities. Another main aspect of of ERD's is cardinality, which further defines the relationship between entities in a numerical way. Certain symbols signify the minimum and maximum relationship between different entities. PL/SQL tutorial : Trigger in Oracle Database 11g Complete guide

26:21
Learn in depth about trigger in oracle database 11g, and usage of trigger in Database, different types of trigger with syntax for various events along with writing advance trigger and capturing all details regarding authentication. Explained Instead of trigger. Trigger in Oracle, Trigger in PL/SQL, Oracle Trigger, PL/SQL Trigger, What is Trigger in pl/sql, How to use Trigger in pl/sql, How to write a Trigger in oracle, How to design Trigger in pl/sql, DDL trigger, DML trigger, Instead of trigger, Compound trigger, Logon trigger, Introduction to Triggers You can write triggers that fire whenever one of the following operations occurs: DML statements (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE) on a particular table or view, issued by any user DDL statements (CREATE or ALTER primarily) issued either by a particular schema/user or by any schema/user in the database Database events, such as logon/logoff, errors, or startup/shutdown, also issued either by a particular schema/user or by any schema/user in the database Triggers are similar to stored procedures. A trigger stored in the database can include SQL and PL/SQL or Java statements to run as a unit and can invoke stored procedures. However, procedures and triggers differ in the way that they are invoked. A procedure is explicitly run by a user, application, or trigger. Triggers are implicitly fired by Oracle when a triggering event occurs, no matter which user is connected or which application is being used. How Triggers Are Used Triggers supplement the standard capabilities of Oracle to provide a highly customized database management system. For example, a trigger can restrict DML operations against a table to those issued during regular business hours. You can also use triggers to: Automatically generate derived column values Prevent invalid transactions Enforce complex security authorizations Enforce referential integrity across nodes in a distributed database Enforce complex business rules Provide transparent event logging Provide auditing Maintain synchronous table replicates Gather statistics on table access Modify table data when DML statements are issued against views Publish information about database events, user events, and SQL statements to subscribing applications Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aditya-kumar-roy-b3673368/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SpecializeAutomation/

How to Structure Your Schema-less Database

10:10
Adam Fuchs, CTO and Co-Founder of sqrrl, discusses how to bring structure to noSQL database environments in this whiteboard session hosted by Wikibon's Dave Vellante. NoSQL continues to gain adoption, primarily due to the need for it in corporate daily operations and the freedom it provides compared to the rigid schemas associated with relational technologies. That's the big picture from Coucbbase, which today announced the results of a survey it did with 1,300 practitioners. Couchbase is one of the leading vendors in the NoSQL market so it's not a big surprise to see them publish these rosy results. But the finding do speak to the overall transformation of the database market and the roaring plume of data that is shaping a new tech landscape. I agree that NoSQL has moved beyond the experimentation phase. In part, you can thank Oracle for that. The fact they jumped into the market has given customers more reason to invest more capital into the technology. It's a validation point. Here are some of the results from the survey: Nearly half of the more than 1,300 respondents indicated they have funded NoSQL projects in the first half of this year. In companies with more than 250 developers, nearly 70% will fund NoSQL projects over the course of 2012. 49% cited rigid schemas as the primary driver for their migration from relational to NoSQL database technology. Lack of scalability and high latency/low performance also ranked highly among the reasons given for migrating to NoSQL (see chart below for more details). 40% overall say that NoSQL is very important or critical to their daily operations, with another 37% indicating it is becoming more important. Couchbase asked how companies are using NoSQL Some interesting answers included that go beyond the traditional use cases: real-time tracking and segmentation of users for ad targeting disaster recovery inventory tracking manufacturing automation insurance underwriting multi-call center operations (with replication of production data) Twitter stream analysis Respondents were also asked about what they expect and hope for out of NoSQL in 2012. Couchbase breaks down what they say into four boxes: schemas; replacing RDMS/making it default database; scalability/performance and speed/agility in app development. Answers included: Gaining freedoms from inflexible schemas that do not adapt well to changing business requirements. Making NoSQL an integral part of daily operations and handle at least 30% of transaction load. Allowing the capability to share billions of documents across multiple commodity servers. Help in deploying new features faster without having to manage SQL patch scripts and migrations. ServicesAngle NoSQL -- it fits with so much that we write about. It's a huge factor in the transformation of the enterprise and a necessary focus for any services provider looking to provide a level of value added services.
