BBC DESIGN RULES 1st EPISODE: SPACE AND PLANNING

28:27
Space and Planning Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen gets right down to the fundamentals of design in this fascinating back-to-basics series. He tackles real problems in real homes as he explores six themes: space, colour, light, texture and pattern, balance and order, and personality. In addition to his own in-depth knowledge of design principles, Laurence calls on a colour forecaster, psychologists and a perception specialist to explain and demonstrate the science behind the how and the why. Taking a real home where a design problem is all too apparent, he demonstrates some simple psychology and basic experiments in a 'design lab' back at the studio -- and it's all done without knocking down walls or spending big bucks. Space comes under the spotlight in the first programme. Lack of space is a common problem in British homes which, surprisingly, have 20 square metres less space than Japanese homes, with an average of only 120 square metres. "The cardinal sin that the British indulge in beyond any other nation is the concept of agoraphobic furniture that feels it needs to keep its back against the wall at all times in case something unpleasant happens to it!" quips Laurence. By painting the walls a paler colour, bringing the outside inside by strategically placing an eye-catching object outside the window and switching to light-reflecting flooring, the brain is deluded into thinking that the room is bigger. Suddenly, the crowded living room is calmer and seems larger -- thanks to a little bit of science and the tricks of design rules. Eye brain specialist Dr Ione Fine comments: "Half of interior design is illusion."And on a practical note, Laurence shows why it's better to buy a couple of two-seater sofas -- because three people never sit on a three-seater! Please, enjoy it!

David Netto: “Designing Interiors (The Part They Forgot to Tell You About)”

01:12:05
Architecture, landscape, urbanism . . . we are at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, which takes an enlightened and comprehensive view of “designed” environments and how they interrelate. But—David Netto GSD ’97 asks—how many of you have ever been taught how to make a furniture plan? How to light a room? The secrets of proportion and texture, and the breaking of rules in animating an interior? These are questions Netto has never found a satisfactory answer to in school—any school; one only learns about them from experience in the workplace. The practical truth is that how a project is perceived is key to how it is received—and essential to whether or not it gets published, written about, and given a fair trial after its transition from an abstract hypothetical to real life. Netto has worked as an interior designer for decades and has written about architecture and design history for just as long. He professes to have learned as much from writing about the work of others as from formal education in design. His latest book is about the French designer François Catroux, who since 1968 has innovated and excelled in a career of nearly fifty years with no formal design education whatsoever (he credits Philip Johnson as a formative influence and is presently working with Diller Scofidio & Renfro on an apartment in New York). In the course of his talk, Netto will address the importance of interiors in the success of architecture and his observations on how this gets accomplished, based on what he has learned in his work as a design journalist.

How to develop focal points in your home - Design Lesson 13

08:14
Hi everyone! Welcome to another DESIGN LESSON video! In each video I'm going to review some key design principles that you should keep in mind when you're thinking about renovating or decorating your space. So if you have a design dilemma and need some answers, feel free to comment in the section below with your questions or you can tweet me your questions on twitter @designchickee. Your dilemma could become one of these Design Lesson videos right here! In the meantime, let's get to today's topic… Today I'm going to talk about how to choose and develop focal points in your home. The focal point of a painting is an area of emphasis that demands the most attention and to which the viewer's eye is drawn, pulling it into the painting. A focal point in interior design is an element that catches your attention. It's usually the most important part of a room, where furniture is focused on that focal point, it can determine how you walk into the room around that furniture and it should really hold your attention once you're in the room. This idea, of drawing you into a room is really important because it tends to be the first thing you see when you walk into a space and it becomes your first impression of the space. So you'll want it to be warm and inviting. So... How do you do that? The number one rule is to walk through your home and pinpoint the spots where you need to add warmth and interest to pull you in farther. Interior Design – How To Design A Kitchen With Personality!

03:15
Bold design and statement finishes transform a dated kitchen into a character-filled space. See how homeowner Millie Samanski collaborated with designer Linnea Lions to achieve her dream kitchen. Working with a long and narrow layout, Linnea brightened the space by adding double doors that lead to the backyard. Black and white patterned flooring adds graphic punch, while dark lower cabinets contribute to the contrasting palette. The kitchen extends to a dining area where a bench is surrounded by cabinets for additional storage. Brass details, found in the hardware, light fixture and hand-painted radiator, bring glamor to the space. The result is simply stunning.

What is Interior Architecture and Design?

01:37
Here's a discipline that uses architectural concepts and design principles to transform structures into amazing spaces with cool design elements. Sounds interesting? Interior Architecture and Design is the knowledge of and the ability to intelligently apply design concepts to create functionally and structurally sound and aesthetically appealing interiors. It requires knowledge of concepts of design and technology (within architecture) such as construction, material, landscape, space design, conservation, services (such as plumbing, HVAC) and even adaptive re-use (reusing a building for a purpose other than it was built for, such as, palaces that have now been converted into luxury hotels). combined with an understanding of complex design processes, safety and sustainability, and demographics of end user. In this way, an interior architect and designer is a specialist who – -understands the structural, hardware-related and softer aspects of finishing and furnishing a space -has a sound awareness of human history and anthropology, design theory and perspectives, materiality and technology, spatiality -styling to give the best interior space experience to the client or user. Some interesting areas of work for interior architect designers are in: -Home and Office Interior Architecture and Design -Set Design (Temporary and dynamic in nature) -Exhibition Design (Temporary and dynamic) -Retail Space Design (Dynamic ) -Residential and commercial landscape design and detailing -Furniture, fixtures and equipment Design -Accessories and Furnishings Design -Visual design for Interior Design companies -Interior Design in the health care and hospitality sectors Read up more about the Interior Architecture and Design course at IIAD: http://www.iiad.edu.in/interior-architecture-and-design Explore the possibilities in Interior Architecture and Design: http://www.iiad.edu.in/blog/what-is-architecture-interior-designing-course/

04:11
Designer Margie Doyle transforms the main floor of an Edwardian home into a bright and airy space with soft colors and luxurious textures. Have a look inside the gorgeous space that’s pretty but not too sweet. Margie wanted the aesthetic to reflect her client’s personality so she went for a fresh, playful look. She chose pinks, greys and taupes that all have the same undertone to achieve an airy feel, and layered on quiet patterns and texture for visual interest. The kitchen is made for entertaining with a large island that divides it from the adjacent family room. A large, comfortable sofa adds a relaxed vibe to the space, while built-ins showcase thoughtful accessories. Moldings detailed with cashmere grasscloth wallpaper add depth to the dining room.

Interior Design – This Modern Home Is A Lesson In Minimalist Living

04:34
Architect Gillian Green took a pared-back approach when designing this home. See how she transformed a dark and dated space into a modern home with a reduced palette that still feels warm and inviting. Gillian opened up the main floor to create a layout that lets the natural light flood in, brightening the clean-lined interior. Concrete floors provide depth and movement, while white oak wood cabinets further the warmth. The kitchen is storage-heavy with a large island where people can gather. A large piece of limestone with stacked logs acts as art in the living room, while black and steel finishes maintain the sleek aesthetic.
