ENGLISH SLANG – 15 trendy fashion words

11:48
Learn new vocabulary about beauty and fashion. Just like fashion trends, the words we use in English to talk about makeup, clothing, hair, and style, change quickly. The words that are used today are not the same as five years ago. There is a whole world of beauty vloggers and fashion hauls on YouTube. If you’re into fashion, you’ll want to look en point when wearing items from your most recent haul. If makeup is your thing, you’ll be wearing a red lip or using a palette to get a smoky eye. You’ll be sporting balayage or ombre hair (don’t worry -- I’ll teach you how to pronounce those new French-origin words too!). Watch and never forget the boyfriends of Instagram. Then take the quiz at https://www.engvid.com/english-slang-15-trendy-fashion-words/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. In this lesson we're going to look at trendy fashion words. These are words that I'm hearing used a lot now around our times, so let's have a look through the words and learn them one-by-one so we can sound really cool and fashionable. Let's start with: "en pointe". If something is en pointe, it means perfect, it looks so good. What you're wearing today, that dress, your dress is en pointe. It's so fashionable, it's so, so hot right now. Very similar meaning to something being "on-trend". If we think about the word "trendy", it means fashionable. But to say something is trendy isn't fashionable enough anymore, we have to change it and say: "on-trend". We could also change it and say: "bang-on-trend". If it's bang-on-trend, it's even more now, happening right this minute. Next, if we're talking about makeup... When I was younger we used to talk about wearing lipstick or wearing red lipstick, or a pink lipstick, but now instead of saying the word "lipstick", it's described as: "I'm wearing a red lip today." And the same thing, instead of saying: "eye shadow", "Oh, I bought this eye shadow. It's blue. Look at it on my eyes", you don't say that because it doesn't... Doesn't sound... Doesn't sound fashionable enough, it doesn't sound like you know about makeup. So, what people who know about makeup say is they say: "Oh, today I'm wearing a smokey eye." I'm not wearing a smokey eye, I haven't got anything on, but a smokey eye is when the eye shadow looks grey or dark, and it's most often worn at night when you're going out. You get your eye shadow these days in "palettes". And instead of wearing just one eye shadow, like, wearing a pink eye shadow, the eye shadow palette comes with about... Well, as many as you want I suppose, but from 4 to 12 eye shadows, and what they do is they put on the different eye shadows from the palette. So, they will talk about creating the smokey eye from palette number three, or whatever. Next is a makeup term that's been around for a few years. This makeup term came from when the Kardashians got famous because the kind of makeup Kim Kardashian would use was a kind of makeup that shades her face to give it a certain... To make it look like there's more shadow on the face and a more dramatic kind of foundation, which is done with different brushes. It's a kind of makeup technique called "contouring". Apparently it comes... Apparently it's a makeup technique that's been around for ages, but before, drag queens used to use it, men who... Men who were still men, but dressed up as women mostly for performance and being in shows and things like that. So it originally comes from there. And I did experiment with contouring. I once watched a few too many YouTube videos, and it all went terribly wrong, so moving on from contouring. Next we have "drugstore makeup". In England we don't have drugstores, we have pharmacies where you go and buy your medicine, and you can buy toiletries, but we don't have drugstores. We have chains of drugstores, for example, Boots or Superdrug, and you can go in there and buy makeup, but we never call those places drugstores. Yet, when people talk about makeup now, the younger generation, they will... They will talk about buying drugstore makeup, which means the kind of makeup that only... Only costs you a few pounds to buy, it's not the really, really expensive makeup, and you can... You can buy it easily, close... Close... Close where you live. So, drugstore makeup is the kind of makeup you can do that doesn't cost you so much money as the really expensive brands. So that's an American term, but it's being used a lot here now in England. The next... The next two terms are about hair. These are newer fashionable techniques for dying your hair, and the two words come from French. In the English pronunciation we'd say: "balayage".

I’ve been able to make a healthy living doing work I love in fashion. But I got started just like you, one step at a time. It began with some embarrassing hand sewn dresses and fashion sketches that would make a 3-year-old’s artwork look like a masterpiece. Then, things changed. I learned how design was done on a large scale. I learned how to get things into production. And I learned all the skills I wish I knew when I was first starting out. How do clothes shape the body? Introduction to Silhouettes | FASHION AS DESIGN

05:45
When we put on clothes, we change the shape and outline of our bodies—sometimes profoundly. The silhouettes we adopt are determined by everything from shifting trends in fashion to what looks and feels good. This week, we explore how clothes shape the body and how cultural constructions of the body shape clothes. FASHION AS DESIGN is a new course by MoMA that explores a selection of garments from around the world—ranging from Kente cloth to jeans to 3D-printed dresses. Each week will begin with a conversation between the course instructors—Paola Antonelli, Michelle Fisher, and Stephanie Kramer—that introduces the themes, items, and questions that we will explore. Face Shapes And Necklines - Fashion Tips By Marilyn Hellman

06:23
Find us at https://www.marilynhellman.com/ Marilyn Hellman demonstrates how to choose various clothing necklines to flatter different face shapes - oval, round, oblong, square, triangle. Transcript Hello, I'm Marilyn Hellman and I'm in my shop in Naples, Florida on Fifth Avenue. We're going to talk about face shapes and necklines. By popular demand we brought back our face shape board and we're going to start out with the oval face because that's the most common and probably the easiest. You never have to worry about this face shape and it goes with turtlenecks, scoop neck lines, and V-necklines. The next face is oblong. With Oblong, you're going to want to emphasize horizontal lines. You should stay from turtlenecks but you can adjust that with jewelry or scarves, and even hairdos. Also, strong horizontal lines really here, esp strapless. You're all sitting there saying what are we going to do about our arms? We have these taffeta jackets, all kinds of different colors and look how pretty this is. There's a lot of things you can do with them. Here again, strong horizontal lines, sometimes it can be in the pattern or the textile that helps, so it's not just the neckline itself. Also, the pattern that's on the dress or blouse will help you. This is the triangle face and I have to tell you this was really kind of one of my favorite faces because I love the kinds of collar configurations that you can do with it. One of them is the umpire and what you're trying to do when you look at the umpire collar is you're trying to fill out in the jaw line down around here to kind of frame the bottom of your face. When you're starting to look at softening things up, you want to make sure that the colors are up in the back. I want to talk to you a little about ruffles, a lot of people think they can't wear ruffles because of their bust size; ruffles can change depending on the width or the length of them, so try a ruffle bust before you give it up. Okay, you didn't think we were to get by without a white blouse but as you can see, when you do some of these bigger collars on the white blouses and you bring them up, see how pretty this can be to fill out the lower part of the chin, that's nice and this is even better with a Marilyn scarf; all of these are really good with the triangle and it has a real regal look. The key thing about round shaped faces is not to wear round necks. With a neckline closer to the neck, we put in a piece of jewelry, that did a really strong V. If you're going to do a V-neck, you definitely emphasize it with a pendant, not something round, that's the key for this. You will be affected by the length of your neck, so the longer your neck, easier it is. Turtlenecks I would stay away from on this and anything like that, just to keep the stuff away from your face. The square face is interesting because it's sort of the opposite of the triangle face, you've got all of this width down here so now we don't want umpire at all. We don't want to stress this part of the angling, what we're looking for is turtlenecks but not too terribly high, more of a modified cowl. Basically stay away from those sort of umpires or any horizontals that are really close to the jawline. There's a couple of points I want to make here about face shapes, first of all, some people can be like two face shapes depending on what their hairdos are, depending on where there eye placement are done and if you want to really test that, you can just go online and put in an actor or an actress and you can see that she will come up under more than one face shape. So, I don't want you to think because you have one particular face shape, that it's set in stone. The other one too is, there's a lot of things you can do if you want to wear a neckline that's a little higher, you can do a really strong piece of jewelry because the eye of the individual looking at you is going to see all this beautiful color in the V-neck. You can also do this with rounded things too when you're wearing V-neck collars, you can wear rounded jewelry underneath, you can also use earrings to emphasize certain parts of your face, and if you get a chance to take a look at my earring video, we've gotten a lot of feedback from that one and even the Hat video will help you with – if you are looking at the type of face shapes and how you want to work with them. The other one is a scarf, I always get mad when people tell me they don't wear scarves, you lose 25% of your ability to work with your wardrobe if you don't do scarf. If you have any questions on that please come in and we'll show you and how that can affect how you going to do some of the things you can wear in your face shape.

THE ULTIMATE FASHION HISTORY: The 1980s

43:06
In this episode of The Ultimate Fashion History, we head into The Eighties, where fashion was marked by an excess of excess, be it in terms of Power Dressing at the Yuppy end of the economic ladder, or the dandyish New Romantic Blitz Kids struggling on the dole. In the USA, hip hop fashion would burst upon the scene, while in London, Vivienne Westwood's Pirate (and then Buffalo) Collections would rock everybody's casbah. And cutting through all of this excess and flamboyance came Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo, bringing with them a whole new fashion aesthetic that would last until today. This episode highlights the fashion and style icons, beauty fads and both the best and the worst of this hit and miss decade.

12 Phrasal Verbs about CLOTHES: dress up, try on, take off...

10:04
Do you know what a 'phrasal verb' is? In this lesson, I will explain what a phrasal verb is, and teach you the most common phrasal verbs native speakers use to talk about clothing. I will teach you 'dress up', 'zip up', 'do up', 'wear in', 'kick off', 'have on', and many more! Phrasal verbs can be difficult for English learners to remember. Watch this lesson and then take the quiz, so that you'll remember them all! https://www.engvid.com/12-phrasal-verbs-clothes/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's video, I am going to teach you some phrasal verbs about getting dressed and putting on clothes. Okay? So it's about clothes. What's a phrasal verb? A phrasal verb is when you have a verb and you have a preposition. So it's a verb plus preposition is a phrasal verb. Students usually hate phrasal verbs. There's so many of them in English and they're very difficult to remember. So, in this video, I'm going to teach you maybe 12 or 13 phrasal verbs that will really help you to improve your English. So let's get started. The first verb I want to teach you is: "dress up". Okay. "Dress up". What does it mean "to dress up"? When you dress up, maybe you have a hot, hot date. Maybe there's the boy or the girl of your dreams and you want to look good - you will dress up, meaning you will wear something that looks extra good. So, for example, right now, I'm wearing this sweater, not dressed up. If I wanted to dress up, oh, look here, maybe I would put on this nice dress. Okay? So dress up. Here's my sentence: "I have a date. I have a date. I should dress up tonight." Okay. "Zip up". So again: "dress up", "zip up". What does "zip up" mean? Well, I'll show you. Did you see that? "Zipping up" means you have a zipper and you pull it up. "Zip up! It's cold!" Mothers love to say this to their children: "Zip up your jacket so you won't be cold." Very similar to zip up, is: "button up". When you "button up" something, you don't zip up, you have buttons. So let me show you. So I will take off my sweater and I will put on a new jacket with buttons. Okay, so if I button up my jacket... Maybe... Where is the button? Okay, here we go. Just like this. Okay? So I buttoned up my jacket. Okay, good. "I should button up my jacket." The next expression I want to teach you: "do up". So all of these: "up", "up", "up", "up". If you "do something up", it means you either button it up or you zip up. "Do up" means the same thing as "zip up" and "button up". "I must do up my jacket." Means: I should button up my jacket, do up your jacket. Okay? It's all the same. "Have on". "What do you have on right now?" It means the same thing as: "wearing". What are you wearing? What do you have on? Pay special attention, the preposition is: "on". Okay? So tell me, what does Emma have on right now? Emma has a hat on. Well, it's not exactly a hat; it's a shower cap. I like to take baths, so this is for the shower. "Put on". "I put on my hat." Okay? When you put something on, it's just putting on. "I put on my hat." What's the opposite of: "put on"? Oh, I don't have it here. Well, you will see it in a moment. But I put on - "take off". I took off my hat. Next expression: "throw on". "I threw on my hat." Can you guess what this means? If I "throw it on", it means I do it quickly. Okay? "I threw on my hat and I ran out the door.", "I threw on my hat and I went to school.", "I threw on my jacket and I went to school." So it means you put on clothes very quickly. I'm going to take off my hat. I think it's a little too colourful. "Try on". What does it mean "to try something on"? If you ever go to a store and you see: "Oh, look at that dress. It's the most beautiful dress." I'm going to try it on, meaning I'm going to put it on at the store to see if I like it. So "try on" is for shopping. You usually go to a small room, a fitting room, and you see if you like the outfit by putting it on. So it's about stores. "At the store, I tried on a shirt.", "At the store, I tried on the shoes, I tried on the hat." So this is the expression: "try on". Again: "on", "on", "on", "on". And the first four were: "up", "up", "up", "up". It's very important that you use the correct prepositions. If I say: "Do down", or: "do in", or: "do off", these maybe don't make any sense or they have different meanings. So the preposition is what makes the meaning. So let me teach you some more expressions about getting dressed. Okay, so I already explained: "take off", but I wanted you to see how it's spelt. "Take off". I took off my hat, now I have no hat. "I took off my jacket." Means to take off your jacket. Okay, so it's the opposite of: "put on". I put on my hat and I took off my hat.

What Does it Take to Be A Fashion Designer?

06:17
Click for more: http://ww2.kqed.org/artschool/ Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez's process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016. Hi, my name is Zachary Fernandez and I'm currently a fashion student. So I am starting my Kathmandu 2016 collection. My collection's gonna be debuting at my school fashion show, and so I have little under seven weeks to get this all put together. So our school assignment was to pick a city that we wanted to be inspired by for this collection. I ended with Kathmandu, Nepal, all of the trouble that they went through last year was really inspiring and I was able to take those ideas of imbalance and the destruction of culture and apply that to this new collection. These are the pieces that I ended up designing. They're ever-changing and they kind of just are always in flux. My sketching process involves a lot of images, a lot of mixed medias, I like to do collages, watercolors, acrylic paste, it's a real reflection of what my mind looks like. Here you have the final sketches that I've done. The sketching process for me is really a major step between just ideas and kind of this fantasy world that I've created in my mind to really functional wearable pieces. Fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do. It's really like a group activity, like meet a couple of friends, we'll just go, we'll explore the city, we'll get inspiration. So I'm looking for like a very pale blue that's almost like very silverish, and then I'm gonna be looking for a very deep, rust orange color. Okay, so I need to find this, but more grayish blue. The fabric store is one of those places that you go in with one idea and one concept and one thought, and you come out with like 500 more. This is it. - This is it! - This is it. - [Girl] Dude! - Hey! Yes! So I spend the majority of my time draping and it's definitely a part that will make or break a piece. I take a piece of muslin, which is just a really basic blend fabric, and I started sculpting it to the dress form. And then those mock-ups that I make of the dress form are then fitted to the model, and sometimes I try them on a model, I'm like, this is hideous, I don't know why, it just overpowers her or something happens and that leads to even better ideas and even more just, creativeness. When you design while you create, I just think it takes so much longer and you like pressure yourself so much more. So, my design mind is turned off. And it's just about sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing. So after I finish draping, I take a part of that mockup and I totally seam rip it and I re-pattern it, and then I cut out of my real fabric. It's always really nerve-wracking 'cause a lot of times the fabric's all that you have, either the budget doesn't allow for you to get more fabric, or there's simply not anymore left. It has this like box-like structure in it. The box is actually lined with horse-hair so that it can kind of take the shape and that's why I'm kind of trying to like manipulate it right now 'cause it just takes on whatever shape you really need it to. The show, oh the show. Six days, and I'm still cutting up fabric like, I don't think that's normal. There's always going to be that last minute hurry up and finish like state of being. I have a picture in my mind about how this is supposed to go, but who knows if it actually go that way. I think that there can be a lot of different ways to read the look. Obviously you look for like the main things like color, silhouette, is this an evening piece, is this a day piece and you just kind of put the garment and choose certain categories and that really helps people read fashion out, by the time the piece is on the runway I'm already thinking about a whole new collection and I'm really thinking something totally different, but it doesn't really hit me that these people, for them it's the first time that they've seen this. I've spent months and months planning and sketching and putting it together. If I see all these different things in these pieces, but no one else does, then it's kind of sad, but then it's also part of what makes fashion art, is because people see it in so many different ways. We are in my home, studio, bedroom combination in Berkeley, California. I have this look from Project Runway Junior, which was the first episode, and this look for my most recent collection. They really mean a lot to me 'cause they show how much progress I've made within the last four, five months.

A Beginners Guide to the Fabric Store! For MHS Fashion Design Students

13:17
Going to a fabric store for the first time can be a quite daunting task, so I hope this will take some of the confusion out of it! This video is for the benefit of our students in our Fashion Design and Construction class at Mason High School. In southwestern Ohio, we may not have an amazing store like MOOD fabrics in New York City, but close to our high school we have a couple of convenient options for the kids to utilize. I show JoAnne Fabrics and the Walmart fabric department in the video. In this video, students will find an explanation of things they will find in the notions aisle, as well as how to select and find a pattern using the books and drawers, where to find upholstery fabrics, decorator and quilting fabrics, apparel fabrics, etc. It is shown on the end of the fabric bolts where to find the price, fabric composition, and washing instructions... a necessary bit of information before you cut and purchase any fabric. Always read your pattern for suggested types of fabrics for the selected item. Some fabrics aren't appropriate for many applications... so check the pattern, the material composition, and washing instructions! Where the future of fashion is headed - VPRO documentary

50:15
What is the future of fashion and where is the fashion industry heading to? What kind of future do fashion pioneers think of and how do they try to change the way of thinking about fashion? A documentary about the future and a new way of approach to fashion. Every year more than 100 billion new garments are produced. A third of that is never sold, worn and shredded or burned. In the global race for the fastest production at the lowest prices, the fashion and clothing industry has developed into a dazzling Fast Fashion system. That system is not only based on exploitation, but also responsible for 10% of global CO2 emissions. How can we change fashion and still enjoy it? Backlight shows five future fashion pioneers who make their industry future-proof by experimenting with new fabrics, reuse and hi-tech design. Their 'fashion of the future' goes far beyond sustainability alone. They also force us to look differently at beauty and the role that clothing plays in our lives. During the Fashion Week in London, the British duo Vin + Omi presents a haute couture collection made with fabrics based on plants and plastic bottles. The Amsterdam label Hacked By is experimenting with the reuse of clothing surpluses, in collaboration with the large fashion chains that produce these surpluses. And the Flemish designer Jasna Rokegem presents the possibility of clothing, which is made every morning by a 3D printer. Or will we all in the future wear that one ultimate piece of clothing that changes with our moods, protects us against bacteria, repairs itself and never needs to be washed? Almost weekly the fast fashion carousel spits out new collections. The production time between the catwalks in Paris, London and Milan and the clothes racks of the big chains such as H & M and Zara is shorter than ever. Fashion has become affordable and accessible to everyone, but we buy too much and the clothing industry pollutes the planet. The surpluses of returned and unsold garments are accumulating. Even African countries do not want the discarded new clothing anymore, because it disrupts internal production. Every second a truck full of new textiles is burnt somewhere. Getting out of this vicious cycle turns out to be difficult for consumers, designers and producers, and still – a difference can be made. Original title: Future fashion With: Vin + Omi (fashion designers), Orsola de Castro (founder Fashion Revolution), Jasna Rokegem (digital designer, inventor and founder Jasna Rok), Otto von Busch (author, teacher at Parsons School of Design, New York) and Francisco van Benthum & Alexander van Slobbe (fashion designers and founders Hacked By). Conversation about fashion. How to choose a design when sewing a dress.

07:25
Guys, I’m so happy to get a feedback from you! Knowing that you find my tutorials useful is the best reward for me. I teach you to use your imagination, to work with patterns and designs, to not be afraid of using different details and techniques. I want you to be free from ready-made patterns. I want you to be different and beautiful. It’s impossible if you wear clothes of one and the same design every day. I want you to learn to work with different lines. Don’t be afraid to use your imagination! I show you new designs, ideas and techniques. You are free to do whatever you want. I show you some complicated designs to show you different sewing techniques which you can use in your work. Of course I want you to give your opinion on what I’m doing. I just don’t want you to criticize my work – if you don’t like the seam or the length of the dress – change it! It’s absolutely okay if you don’t like what I show you. I know that my subscribers are very talented! I love it when you send me photos of the clothes you make. I don’t like it when people write that clothes we make are ugly. Sew beautiful ones if you don’t like what we do. Some say that the techniques I show you are too simple. Do you really want me to show you complicated techniques? I will be able to manage with them, will you? I honestly don’t think so. First you need to learn some simple basic techniques, and only then move on to complicated ones. We all know that fashion repeats itself. What was in trend in 2009 may be in trend again is 2018. Guys, please, send me photos of clothes you make! I will be happy to see them. I love to get feedback from you! Be polite and tolerant! Be different and beautiful and learn to sew. My name is Paukshte Irina. Guys, please, subscribe to my channel, write comments, share videos and press the “like” and “bell” buttons! Thank you!

I Tried 4 Different Personalized Style Boxes

17:37
So I've been seeing advertisements for personalized style boxes for years, so I finally decided to take the plunge and buy them and see what they would send me! I tried Stitch Fix, Le Tote, Wantable, and Trunk Club to test and compare their clothes and prices, and see if they are worth it! I took all of their quizzes and then did a massive unboxing haul to show you guys what they're all about. What do you think? Would you try one of these?
