How to shop for sustainable fashion | Justine Leconte

06:19
This video answers your questions from 3 weeks ago: How to know which fashion brands are ethical and sustainable? Where to shop for sustainable clothes? My 5 tips: 1. Visit the brand’s ABOUT section: are they being transparent about their process and about where the fabrics come from? 2. Google the brand: were there sourcing scandals in which the brand was involved? 3. Look out for certification symbols in online shops and check the symbols on the Eco Label Index: http://goo.gl/9KTKSr Examples: GOTS and FAIR TRADE. 4. Research by country, brand or production criteria on Eco Fashion World: http://goo.gl/DWMntR Example: ABURY, my friend’s label based in Berlin with production in Marocco: http://goo.gl/h2XE8m 5. Read blogs and websites about sustainable fashion. Here are a few interesting ones: Guide to buying sustainable, fair trade and vegan clothing: http://goo.gl/9oBYS0 Affordable fashion online: http://goo.gl/zWxn7d Sourcing directory for fashion: http://goo.gl/A3t2Y5 Ethical Consumer – the website of the magazine: http://goo.gl/NYHe8N And if you see a brand doing something wrong, say it! Thoughts on the 'Made In' label | Green Tea Talk

06:43
This is a new series where I just chat and share my thoughts on different (mostly sustainable/ethical fashion related) topics. In this one, I discuss the 'made in' or country of origin labels on clothing and why I don't think they mean very much and shouldn't be used as an indicator of ethically or non-ethically made clothing. I think it's important to look beyond the labels and ask companies questions. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this! Are clothing labels something you pay attention to when shopping? Earth Month FASHION Finds! April 2012 Eco Friendly Fashion Designers Labels

01:55
Earth Month FASHION Finds! http://bit.ly/SubClevverStyle - Subscribe to ClevverStyle! http://Twitter.com/ClevverTV - Follow Us! While being Eco Friendly is always a plus—April marks the beginning of Earth Month which is a great excuse to up our game and do a little extra green retail therapy. One of the first things I've got my eye on for Earth Month, is this snakeskin Envirosax tote! It's only $12 and it's the perfect carryall tote. It's right on trend with the print and it's also a great budget friendly gift for your friends! Next, I love this comfy pullover by Threads for Thought—it's $89.00 and the ideal piece for a dress down day. Pair it with some colored skinny jeans and fun flats for a snazzy and eco-friendly ensemble. And Alternative Apparel is seriously one of the best eco-friendly labels, with the most amazing line of clothing. I am obsessed with this Maxi dress in Bermuda—It's totally effortless and so versatile. There are so many different looks you can get from this maxi and it's only $68.00 And of course Stella McCartney launched an eco-friendly line of sunglasses that are made from %50 natural and renewable resources. The run from $225.00 and come in a bunch of different frames and colors that are phenomonal. And who says your product's can't go green—and one of my favorite organic, paraben free lines is Juice Beauty. All of their products are great, but I really love this moisturizer with SPF 15 for $38.00. It's a great addition to your skin care regiment and it's as green as they get! I'm Brianna Baxter for Daily Style.

THE BEST ECO-FRIENDLY COLLECTION FOR BABIES

07:08
I have to admit; I took a long trip down memory lane when filming this episode. It is so hard to believe that my son is now 16 years old! I have so many vivid memories of endlessly strolling through the aisles at the Baby Shop when I was pregnant and when he was an infant, mixing and matching outfits and getting everything he could possibly need. Seeing Priya with her adorable little son brought back so many cherished moments, which is why I wanted to share this exciting announcement with you. Recently, there have been rising concerns about toxins and dangerous chemicals in our synthetic clothes. According to research, chemically treated natural and synthetic fabrics are a source of toxins that adversely affect your health and the health of the planet. Many fashion labels have heard the message and released eco-friendly collections, but Baby Shop is actually the first to cater for babies and small children. As a mother, I am always on the look-out for the best products concerning my son’s diet, skin and so on, but it never occurred to me that his clothes might be affecting his health as well! If you are concerned about your baby’s health and wellbeing and are looking for more natural and organic clothing options, look no further! The Baby Shop is a one stop destination that has everything you could possibly need for your baby, and they are here with an all new sustainable, eco-friendly collection for newborns and babies to keep them healthy and happy. Best of all, their clothing is affordable, fashion forward, and their stores even have personal shopping advisors to help you decide what to buy. Read the details here on the 4 new categories of this collection and watch the video linked below for exclusive coverage. The Mint Collection It does not only look cool; it feels cool as well! The fabric made of this clothing is derived from mint leaves, which is known for its cooling and refreshing characteristics. It is also anti-irritation, making it perfect for premature babies or babies with sensitive skin. The Milk Collection These items are made of milk protein called casein, which is soft and antibacterial and smooth on the skin. The PH level of the fabric matches the PH level of the baby’s skin for the ultimate soothing texture. The Bamboo Fiber Collection Bamboo is known for being a thermal regulator, and that is exactly what these items are here for. This collection is soft; it maintains your baby’s internal temperature, making it great for layering in all seasons. The Muslin Collection With a moisture absorbing fabric, natural temperature control, and breathable texture, Muslin is ideal for delicate clothing, being both durable and shrinkage resistant. So that is all for today’s segment on the Baby Shop’s new collection. Have you experienced the effect of any of these textures or fabrics on your baby’s health and skin? My thoughts on designer items, labels, logos etc. | Random rambles #13

14:33
Designer labels are fine with me when we’re speaking “investment pieces” and classic design icons, and as long as we don’t overdo our consumption of these. I actually think it’s important that we support good designs and originality. But even some designer labels have become greedy since the evolution of fast fashion; that means they have kept their high price points, but the quality may not always be worth the money. So it’s tricky! Watch the video to find out more, and let me know your thoughts down below too. Made in Germany | Eco-fashion: Save the Planet and Look Good

03:57
Environmentally-friendly clothes are in fashion. And on the catwalk, the sack-like eco-fashion of the past is nowhere to be seen. For Dutch jeans-maker Kuyichi, coolness comes before eco-ethics. But by combining savvy design with ethical principles, the company has managed to get its trousers hanging on the rails of top department stores like Galeries Lafayette. The jeans carry labels on how they were produced, with more information available on the web. It's attractive to fashion-conscious consumers who want to keep their consciences clear -- and that means about a quarter of consumers in Germany. After the USA, Germany is now the second largest importer of ethically-produced cotton worldwide. Kerstin Schweizer reports from Berlin on the boom in eco-fashion.

True Fashion Talks 3: 'Power to the Consumer'

08:46
Sustainability in fashion is hot. With many inspiring fashion labels, sustainable brands showing at fashion weeks, concept stores and other initiatives, honest and sustainable fashion enjoys the spotlights more than ever. Yet, it remains a niche market. If the sector is keen to really move forward, ‘mainstream’ should be equally addressed and included. At ‘True Fashion Talks’ we invite industry professionals to discuss urgent challenges and possible solutions. Along with more than 80 fashion lovers in the room, Dianne Potters (21Sustainable), Nienke Steen (Modint), Holly Syrett (GW Agency) and Jessica Radparvar (Reconsidered) all shared their view along with tangible tips for consumers to take home. Ethical Fashion

10:43
I love fashion but like any half decent, intelligent person I don't really want my wardrobe to come at the cost of other people around the world or the environment. And I'm not alone; more and more labels are beginning to think about their environmental and social impact. This means that there is now a good selection of stylish yet ethical brands for the discerning consumer to choose from. Admittedly I haven't done as much research as I should have done into sustainable fashion, as an intern I worked with an ethical designer and it really opened my eyes but for me learning about this area is an ongoing process. However I thought I'd share some of my favourite ethical labels just to show you some of the great brands that are out there. Veja- Veja is a shoe and accessories brand founded on 3 principles- the use of ecological inputs(?), the use of Fair-Trade cotton and latex and a respect for worker's dignity. I think that just about covers everything one could want from an ethically minded brand. What I really love about this brand, however, is their honesty, there is a section of their website which goes into some detail about their ethical credentials. http://www.veja.fr/#/projets Ultra 10- This isn't so much a brand or a label as it is a concept, it comes courtesy of blog turned ethical fashion consultancy We Are Ultra based in the far east. Their Ultra 10 collection is an interesting experiment in limiting consumption, the collection consists of only 10 stylish, multi-functional pieces and the idea is that that this capsule wardrobe should last the wearer a whole year. I've had difficultly finding a stockist for the collection though so I suggest you head over to the We are Ultra website for more info. http://weareultra.com/projects/ Partimi- Sustainable ideals are all well and good but I believe good design is just as important, if it doesn't look good no-one will wear it principles or no principles. This is why I like Partimi, founded by designer Eleanor Dorrien-Smith Partimi uses beautifully modern graphic prints to create luxurious yet chic womenswear. http://partimi.com/wp/ Pachacuti- Fair-Trade brand Pachacuti make great hats and that alone is enough of a reason to support them. Pachacuti's hats are produced by two women's co-operatives in the Andes giving the producers a sustainable income. Incidentally, Pachacuti often exhibit at Esthetica, LFW's ethical showcase, if you want to find more ethical/sustainable labels Esthetica is a good place to start. http://www.panamas.co.uk/ http://www.britishfashioncouncil.co.u... American Apparel- I wanted to include American Apparel in this video because they are really the only highstreet (sort of) brand that is pretty much 100% sweatshop free and that takes real steps to decrease their environmental impact. I don't have much money so AA is about the only ethical brand I can really afford to buy and some of their collection is pretty stylish and fashion forward. But, and its a big but, I absolutely loath their adverts, I don't know how they rationalise their images of young women but I really can't excuse it. I am not saying that all their female models are under-age, but they only seem to use models who look ridiculously young, which makes the overtly sexual posing even more disturbing. I don't know what to do about this as a consumer, I'd like to just boycott AA but again they're the only highstreet brand that is guaranteed sweatshop free, if you have any ideas on what I should do please comment below. Maybe I should write a letter. http://www.americanapparel.net/ No Copyright infringement is intended.

Sustainable fashion of the future on show in Berlin

05:54
(16 Jan 2018) LEAD IN Reducing fashion waste is one of the main topics at this year's Green and Ethical Showroom and FashionTech event in Berlin. The two shows are a part of the Berlin Fashion Week - one of Europe's most important fashion events. STORY-LINE It's the time of the year when the fashion world leaves London, Milan and Paris to decamp in the German capital Berlin. The Berlin Fashion Week is the first major fashion event of the year, and it sets the stage for the season to come. But, away from the runways and the parties are two events hoping to set the stage for years to come, not just the next season. Over recent years, the Green and Ethical Showroom and the FashionTech event have become more visible and important. For the first time, the events are being held together in one venue to focus on the future of fashion - a future that is more sustainable and ethical. This year the focus is on waste, and how it can be prevented, says Thimo Schwenzfeier, the head of the events. One person that is focusing on reducing waste is Brazilian designer Larissa Roviezzo. Her handbags are all made of recycled or biodegradable material - including one handbag made out of pineapple leaves. The leaves are a waste product when harvesting the pineapples for consumption. One company in the Philippines has developed a method to use that waste to create a material that is similar to leather. And once you throw away the bag it will degrade and slowly disappear - there is no part that is not biodegradable. Another designer working with waste is Taiwanese dressmaker Chen Wen Ting. Her traditional dresses are made out of recycled polyester - the material that originally comes from recycled PET bottles. She wants to show that new materials like polyester can be used to create traditional looking garments. "I think it is very important when we go forward to future, to value our traditions and culture together," she says. Swedish designer Jonna Haeggblom is taking a different approach. Her clothes are modular, meaning that they can be modified over the years to change with a consumer's changing taste. Patterns can be added, and collars can be attached or removed. The idea is to make consumers keep their clothes longer. "If a consumer lacks the desire to keep the garment there is actually no need to design durability into it. So maybe slow fashion is not the answer but maybe garments that actually evolve with the consumer's changing needs and desires," she says. Over 170 labels are showing their products at the Green and Ethical showroom and at the FashionTech event. Some large labels are represented, but most are smaller companies and relatively unknown designers. "We want to get the new generation excited," says Schwenzfeier. "So that they can absorb all these new trends and then, when they are done with the school, their universities or their startups, and they move on to large corporations, then they can bring these ideas and show the large corporations that there are new processes available." The Green and Ethical Showroom and the FashionTech events opened on January 16 and runs through January 18. Ethical, green fashion boom at the Berlin Fashion Week

06:52
(19 Jan 2017) LEAD-IN: Sustainable fashion is becoming mainstream according to organisers at Berlin Fashion Week. The Green and Ethical showrooms fashion show started as a small satellite event at Berlin six years ago. This year a record 179 brands are taking part as fashion industry grows ever more environmentally conscious. STORY-LINE It looks like any other show at Berlin Fashion Week. But all of these models are wearing clothes that have certifications for sustainability and ethics. This is the Green and Ethical showrooms fashion show. The satellite event of the Berlin Fashion Week started with 35 labels in 2011. It has now grown to a record 179 participating labels and is becoming one of the year's biggest events of sustainable and ethical fashion. In the showroom, located in an old train station in the east of the German capital, the labels are showing their products. German label Kunert is showing a brand new line of stockings. These fishnet stockings look like any other, but the thread used in them is actually recycled fishing net. They made from so-called ghost fishnets that have been left in he seas and oceans. Susanne Mayr, Kunert head of brand, explains: "We make stockings from fishnets - together with out partner Econyl that does the process with us. The fishnets are shredded, then other materials such as remains of carpets are added. Then the fluids are removed and it becomes a granulate. And out of this granulate a thread is made and from that we make the stockings." Kunert is showing the stockings for the first time at the Green Showroom and they will be available for sale on the Kunert website within the next few weeks. "There are far too many "ghost nets" in the ocean. They are removed because they continue to catch and kill fish. So we can use this material in a good way to make our stockings," says Mayr. These high heel shoes from German designer Alina Schuerfeld are another catch from the ocean. The shoes are made out of discarded salmon skin, a bi-product of fishing that is mostly thrown away. The salmon skin is treated to become a leather, a bit like snake leather, but softer. But if you are looking for budget shoes then look away now, the Salmon skin shoes are available for 468 euros (489 dollars) on Schuerfeld's website. All the brands that are showing products at the Green and Ethical showrooms have gone through an application process to prove that they are sustainable. Thimo Schwenzfeier, head of Green and Ethical showrooms, explains: "A label needs to apply to attend these shows, both the green showroom and the ethical fashion show, based on different certificate like the GOTS, Global Organic Textile Standard, or Eco Text. And we, together with our partners, are checking these certificates." Exallo has travelled from Greece to have a booth at the Green and Ethical showrooms. The company makes hand-crafter accessories out of sustainable wood. The most eye-catching are these wooden bow ties. They are available for 55 euros on the Exallo website. The Green and Ethical showrooms are located a bit away from the main events of the Berlin Fashion Week, but it has seen an explosive growth over the last few years. Schwenzfeier says that sustainable fashion is not just woollen scarves and hemp shirts anymore. The market segment is becoming mainstream. "We need to state that eco-fashion is no different from normal fashion, but the sustainability aspect. So what you see in the retail stores, what you see that you can buy online, you can see here as well." Swiss company Carpasus is showing its ties made from Swiss silk. Last year Swiss farmers were able to supply Carpasus with 30 kilograms of silk that were used for the company's ties. SANS. HOME MADE.

05:59
Lika Volkova of SANS clothing line and Scott Hahn of Loomstate and Rogan brands talk about sustainability in fashion industry. Is it possible to create an eco-friendly label? Lika Volkova, the designer behind SANS clothing line says no. The result of a new clothing line is, of course, more clothing. When all is said and done, this means that more factories are running, more trucks are transporting, and ultimately, more waste is being created. Organic cotton? Well, it just another myth. Cotton — organic or not — requires excessive amounts of water to produce. Lika urges us to stop using green and sustainable labels and rethink clothing production instead. The result would be making things a little bit better and move incrementally towards greener design. In Likas opinion this includes using both organic and synthetic fabrics. Based in New York, Lika and her partner Alessandro DeVito have created the SANS clothing line in order to explore what a legitimate path to the future would be like in terms of clothing design and sustainable production. Lika moved to the US from Russia at 17 and started an independent line called ANTILIKA in New York several years later. After her first runway show, Lika realized that her interest was not in the fashion worlds system of brands, marketing, and the spectacle of shows. In fact, she sees large-scale shows contributing to the industrys overall carbon footprint as professionals fly around the world multiple times a year to see presentations, which today could be seen online live. ANTILIKA concentrated on small, personal collections that experimented with shape and practicality. I was really interested in making things for certain reasons that werent necessarily fashion, she says. I was interested in what comfort meant. For example pants could be comfortable for the legs, but not comfortable for the mind. ANTILIKA featured almost exclusively synthetic fabric. Neoprene, a synthetic rubber used for sneakers and wetsuits, was a main component. I was trying to make things that didnt look like clothes, Lika says. Many of her designs are driven by her unique notion of functionality. Lika explains, I, for example, am neurotic and I always need to do something with my hands. So I made clothes for people like me — you could change the shape according to your mood. Lika joined forces with Devito to form SANS in 2006 in an attempt to produce more eco-friendly clothing that would appeal to a wider audience. Alex showed me some eco-brands, but they all looked the same, says Lika, there was nothing about them that said it could be a legitimate path to the future. The first SANS collection was about the American basics - jeans and t-shirts, which Lika re-worked for their practicality. She made jeans with pockets for drinks, the scarves turned into handbags and dresses had two sizes built into them. The collection was created out of the newest organic materials available at the time, like soy fabrics made of tofu by-products. However, the use of organic materials is only a part of SANS interest in sustainability. As Lika states, Just substituting artificial fabrics with natural ones is not going to be the solution its more important to come up with different values about clothes. One of the biggest problem in the world of fashion is that of over-production. In response, SANS has introduced downloadable patterns on their website. Lika explains that providing patterns cuts down on carbon intensive mass production and distribution. Instead of mass producing a garment that gets shipped throughout the world, people can buy a pattern (prices range from $6 to $25) and either create clothes themselves or bring it to their local tailor to create it for them. The idea is that the garment is made locally. When you have a piece that you made yourself, you relate to it differently. You value it differently. says Lika. Perhaps a garment would not be easily thrown away to be replaced by a new one, had it been made by our hands.

Fashion Week Video - Greenshowroom & Ethical Fashion Show

By design: Gender-neutral clothes and eco-friendly creations

05:34
(11 Sep 2018) LEADIN: Environmentally-friendly creations and gender-neutral clothing are starring at an annual competition at London's Design Museum. Curators say designers are tackling challenges faced by the world, whether it's mounting plastic pollution or climate change. STORYLINE: It might look like top couture, but this recycled dress by UK-based designer Matty Bovan was woven from tweed suits once owned by his late grandmother. It's greeting visitors to the eleventh Beazley Designs of the Year exhibit, held at London's Design Museum. This stone table was created by London-based designer Paul Cocksedge. In response to the threat of eviction from his east London studio, he drilled tonnes of material from its floor and began creating. Creations by almost 90 nominees are on display as part of the annual design competition. Concern over the environment is a major theme. Curator Aric Chen says many are tackling challenges faced by our planet, from mounting plastic pollution to climate change. "I think, design has always been a very responsive discipline. I mean, it really is about really articulating, navigating and making sense of the world that we inhabit," he says. "So, in that sense, I think it's only natural that designers are looking at some of the challenges and questions that we're confronted with." One example is this environmentally-friendly water bottle, made by Will and Jaden Smith's drinks brand JUST Water. It's completely biodegradable, including the cap. "They created a brand called JUST Water and it uses biodegradable paper containers with caps that are not plastic but derive from sugarcane and are compostable," explains Chen. Campaign group A Plastic Planet is showcasing what's claimed to be a plastic-free supermarket aisle. It features an array of recyclable glass, metal, cardboard and biodegradable containers. "I think it is scalable, but it starts from we have to work on different levels and has to come from the consumer," says A Plastic Planet co-founder Frederikke Magnussen. "Right now, we can't shop plastic-free, we can have gluten-free, fat-free, sugar-free, wheat-free, but we don't have a plastic-free option. "So, we want to be able to give people that option in their daily shop. So, if you don't want to have plastic in your life, you don't have to." While the #MeToo movement has focused on gender inequality and female empowerment, designers have also begun to explore the malleability of genders. The exhibit features gender-bending male clothing by fashion house Palomo Spain. There's also a line of gender-neutral clothing by New York-based fashion designer Telfar Clemens. "He's been working sort of under the radar for quite a while," says Chen. "And it's only recently that he's been sort of acknowledged for his line that's sort of gender-neutral or gender ambiguous, under the rubric of; 'It's not for you, it's for everyone.' And I think that is the ethos he follows." Pevious editions of the annual design competition have been dominated by high-tech creations, from driverless cars, to smartphone apps and gadgets. This year's selection is much less tech driven. Designers, Chen says, are working in the here and now. "A lot of the things that we're so obsessed with - driverless cars, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things etc. etc. - these were all imagined 50, 100 years ago," he says. "So, in many ways, what we're doing now is we are working towards realising the future as the past imagined it.
