ENGLISH SLANG – 15 trendy fashion words

11:48
Learn new vocabulary about beauty and fashion. Just like fashion trends, the words we use in English to talk about makeup, clothing, hair, and style, change quickly. The words that are used today are not the same as five years ago. There is a whole world of beauty vloggers and fashion hauls on YouTube. If you’re into fashion, you’ll want to look en point when wearing items from your most recent haul. If makeup is your thing, you’ll be wearing a red lip or using a palette to get a smoky eye. You’ll be sporting balayage or ombre hair (don’t worry -- I’ll teach you how to pronounce those new French-origin words too!). Watch and never forget the boyfriends of Instagram. Then take the quiz at https://www.engvid.com/english-slang-15-trendy-fashion-words/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. In this lesson we're going to look at trendy fashion words. These are words that I'm hearing used a lot now around our times, so let's have a look through the words and learn them one-by-one so we can sound really cool and fashionable. Let's start with: "en pointe". If something is en pointe, it means perfect, it looks so good. What you're wearing today, that dress, your dress is en pointe. It's so fashionable, it's so, so hot right now. Very similar meaning to something being "on-trend". If we think about the word "trendy", it means fashionable. But to say something is trendy isn't fashionable enough anymore, we have to change it and say: "on-trend". We could also change it and say: "bang-on-trend". If it's bang-on-trend, it's even more now, happening right this minute. Next, if we're talking about makeup... When I was younger we used to talk about wearing lipstick or wearing red lipstick, or a pink lipstick, but now instead of saying the word "lipstick", it's described as: "I'm wearing a red lip today." And the same thing, instead of saying: "eye shadow", "Oh, I bought this eye shadow. It's blue. Look at it on my eyes", you don't say that because it doesn't... Doesn't sound... Doesn't sound fashionable enough, it doesn't sound like you know about makeup. So, what people who know about makeup say is they say: "Oh, today I'm wearing a smokey eye." I'm not wearing a smokey eye, I haven't got anything on, but a smokey eye is when the eye shadow looks grey or dark, and it's most often worn at night when you're going out. You get your eye shadow these days in "palettes". And instead of wearing just one eye shadow, like, wearing a pink eye shadow, the eye shadow palette comes with about... Well, as many as you want I suppose, but from 4 to 12 eye shadows, and what they do is they put on the different eye shadows from the palette. So, they will talk about creating the smokey eye from palette number three, or whatever. Next is a makeup term that's been around for a few years. This makeup term came from when the Kardashians got famous because the kind of makeup Kim Kardashian would use was a kind of makeup that shades her face to give it a certain... To make it look like there's more shadow on the face and a more dramatic kind of foundation, which is done with different brushes. It's a kind of makeup technique called "contouring". Apparently it comes... Apparently it's a makeup technique that's been around for ages, but before, drag queens used to use it, men who... Men who were still men, but dressed up as women mostly for performance and being in shows and things like that. So it originally comes from there. And I did experiment with contouring. I once watched a few too many YouTube videos, and it all went terribly wrong, so moving on from contouring. Next we have "drugstore makeup". In England we don't have drugstores, we have pharmacies where you go and buy your medicine, and you can buy toiletries, but we don't have drugstores. We have chains of drugstores, for example, Boots or Superdrug, and you can go in there and buy makeup, but we never call those places drugstores. Yet, when people talk about makeup now, the younger generation, they will... They will talk about buying drugstore makeup, which means the kind of makeup that only... Only costs you a few pounds to buy, it's not the really, really expensive makeup, and you can... You can buy it easily, close... Close... Close where you live. So, drugstore makeup is the kind of makeup you can do that doesn't cost you so much money as the really expensive brands. So that's an American term, but it's being used a lot here now in England. The next... The next two terms are about hair. These are newer fashionable techniques for dying your hair, and the two words come from French. In the English pronunciation we'd say: "balayage".
Vocabulary: Talking about CLOTHES in English

07:01
Clothes are part of our everyday life. In this easy vocabulary lesson, you will learn how to talk about clothing, how to pay compliments about someone’s outfit, and what dress codes such as "smart casual", "black tie", and "Sunday best" mean. Boring vocabulary is so last season, so put your glad rags on, and watch this lesson to learn some exciting new words. You will be looking smart in no time. http://www.engvid.com/english-vocabulary-clothes/ TRANSCRIPT Hello, and welcome back to EngVid. You've found the right place to learn English. Today, we're going to be learning to speak about clothes, about choosing the right clothes, giving compliments, the names of different styles of clothing. So first things first, instructions. If you're holding a party, you might tell them to arrive in a particular type of clothing. You might say, "Dress up." Okay? You expect them to dress up. You'll maybe say to the women to wear skirts and maybe even say to the guys, "Wear a tie." Okay? If it's a smart, smart occasion. "Vamp it up!" is a bit of a party term. If you're a girl and you're inviting other girls to come and party with you, "Vamp it up." You expect mascara and make up, etc. Obviously not for the guys. Don't worry. "Put your glad rags on!" This is another phrase about partying. Kind of put your, sort of, retro flares on and your, kind of, checked shirts. You're going out for a night on the town. Now, I know we've got some viewers who live in Russia. You might want to "wrap up warm". I'm going to Norway this weekend, and I'll certainly be wrapping up warm. Or you could just say, "Wear a shirt and tie" or, "Put on a colourful jacket." Maybe you're having a fancy dress, okay? "Fancy dress" is where we wear -- maybe you dress up as Mr. Men or as superheroes. "Fancy dress" is a particular type of character party. Good. Other types of clothing, "Sunday best". You go to church, and you have a nice Sunday lunch. You'd ask them to put on their "Sunday best", their best clothes for a Sunday. If it's a, kind of, smart, sort of, business networking -- perhaps at someone's house -- maybe "smart casual", respectable clothing. "Evening wear" is a little bit more smart, okay? "Evening wear", kind of, suits, shirts, ties, maybe "black tie". That would suggest a bow tie. Or in America, you call that "tuxedos", okay? Or "professional work attire". That's, kind of, the kind of clothes that you would go to the office in. Now, I'm going to be going to a party this evening, so I'll just go and spruce up. See you in a little bit. So I'm ready for my party. I've put my after-shave on. And, wow. Look at her. She's looking pretty good. I need to think of some compliments, some nice things to say about the clothes she's wearing. A nice simple one, I could say, "Great outfit." Or, "You're looking great." Now, if I'm talking just about the clothes, I could say, "That -- those trousers go really well with the top you're wearing." Or, "It works. It really works with your hair, the hair colour and trousers." Or, "The top, it just so suits your particular eye type, your eye colour." So you can pair the colours of their hair and their eyes." Or you could just say, "That really suits you." Okay? "Suits" is the same word as a business suit. You can use it as a verb as well. "It really suits you." Now, some more compliments. You can use "so" as a, sort of, substitute for "very". So I could say, "You're looking so smart." Or, "You're looking so elegant, so graceful, so stylish." Or, "You're looking dapper." "Dapper" is more often used about men than it is about girls. But it's a great adjective for saying that you're looking good. Now, some nasty things to say about what someone's wearing, some criticisms. "I am sorry, but those colours just don't work on you" or, "Those colours, they don't really work very well with you. They don't suit you." Okay? Or if I just don't think their clothes balance with them, I could say, "You don't really pull that off." Like, if I were wearing a yellow checked suit with a pink spotted shirt, my wife would say to me, "Benjamin, you can't really pull that one off." Okay. Now, if you're very knowledgeable about fashion, you could say, "That's a bit last season." Okay? "Season." We've, you know, spring, summer, autumn, winter. And fashions, you have spring fashions, summer fashions. "A bit last season. The clothes you are wearing are a bit 2012." Now, particular things with the clothes. If the colour is a bit faded -- can you all see my trousers? The colour, it's a bit faded. Okay? It's a bit torn. Can you see here? My trousers, they're torn. I jumped over a fence to get into a festival, and now, they're torn. Okay? "Ripped." It's the same thing.

12 Phrasal Verbs about CLOTHES: dress up, try on, take off...

10:04
http://www.engvid.com/ Do you know what a 'phrasal verb' is? In this lesson, I will explain what a phrasal verb is, and teach you the most common phrasal verbs native speakers use to talk about clothing. I will teach you 'dress up', 'zip up', 'do up', 'wear in', 'kick off', 'have on', and many more! Phrasal verbs can be difficult for English learners to remember. Watch this lesson and then take the quiz, so that you'll remember them all! http://www.engvid.com/12-phrasal-verbs-clothes/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's video, I am going to teach you some phrasal verbs about getting dressed and putting on clothes. Okay? So it's about clothes. What's a phrasal verb? A phrasal verb is when you have a verb and you have a preposition. So it's a verb plus preposition is a phrasal verb. Students usually hate phrasal verbs. There's so many of them in English and they're very difficult to remember. So, in this video, I'm going to teach you maybe 12 or 13 phrasal verbs that will really help you to improve your English. So let's get started. The first verb I want to teach you is: "dress up". Okay. "Dress up". What does it mean "to dress up"? When you dress up, maybe you have a hot, hot date. Maybe there's the boy or the girl of your dreams and you want to look good - you will dress up, meaning you will wear something that looks extra good. So, for example, right now, I'm wearing this sweater, not dressed up. If I wanted to dress up, oh, look here, maybe I would put on this nice dress. Okay? So dress up. Here's my sentence: "I have a date. I have a date. I should dress up tonight." Okay. "Zip up". So again: "dress up", "zip up". What does "zip up" mean? Well, I'll show you. Did you see that? "Zipping up" means you have a zipper and you pull it up. "Zip up! It's cold!" Mothers love to say this to their children: "Zip up your jacket so you won't be cold." Very similar to zip up, is: "button up". When you "button up" something, you don't zip up, you have buttons. So let me show you. So I will take off my sweater and I will put on a new jacket with buttons. Okay, so if I button up my jacket... Maybe... Where is the button? Okay, here we go. Just like this. Okay? So I buttoned up my jacket. Okay, good. "I should button up my jacket." The next expression I want to teach you: "do up". So all of these: "up", "up", "up", "up". If you "do something up", it means you either button it up or you zip up. "Do up" means the same thing as "zip up" and "button up". "I must do up my jacket." Means: I should button up my jacket, do up your jacket. Okay? It's all the same. "Have on". "What do you have on right now?" It means the same thing as: "wearing". What are you wearing? What do you have on? Pay special attention, the preposition is: "on". Okay? So tell me, what does Emma have on right now? Emma has a hat on. Well, it's not exactly a hat; it's a shower cap. I like to take baths, so this is for the shower. "Put on". "I put on my hat." Okay? When you put something on, it's just putting on. "I put on my hat." What's the opposite of: "put on"? Oh, I don't have it here. Well, you will see it in a moment. But I put on - "take off". I took off my hat. Next expression: "throw on". "I threw on my hat." Can you guess what this means? If I "throw it on", it means I do it quickly. Okay? "I threw on my hat and I ran out the door.", "I threw on my hat and I went to school.", "I threw on my jacket and I went to school." So it means you put on clothes very quickly. I'm going to take off my hat. I think it's a little too colourful. "Try on". What does it mean "to try something on"? If you ever go to a store and you see: "Oh, look at that dress. It's the most beautiful dress." I'm going to try it on, meaning I'm going to put it on at the store to see if I like it. So "try on" is for shopping. You usually go to a small room, a fitting room, and you see if you like the outfit by putting it on. So it's about stores. "At the store, I tried on a shirt.", "At the store, I tried on the shoes, I tried on the hat." So this is the expression: "try on". Again: "on", "on", "on", "on". And the first four were: "up", "up", "up", "up". It's very important that you use the correct prepositions. If I say: "Do down", or: "do in", or: "do off", these maybe don't make any sense or they have different meanings. So the preposition is what makes the meaning. So let me teach you some more expressions about getting dressed. Okay, so I already explained: "take off", but I wanted you to see how it's spelt. "Take off". I took off my hat, now I have no hat. "I took off my jacket." Means to take off your jacket. Okay, so it's the opposite of: "put on". I put on my hat and I took off my hat.
Basic shopping vocabulary in English

11:45
http://www.engvid.com/ Use English to shop and save money. When you finish this basic English vocabulary lesson, you will be able to shop with confidence and get what you want when you are in a store! Avoid getting ripped off. Make sure you get a warranty, and a receipt! http://www.engvid.com/basic-shopping-vocabulary/ TRANSCRIPT: [Singing] "Got to buy some dinner tonight." Hi. James from EngVid. So what are we doing? We're going to talk about shopping today. As you can see, I have to go shopping because our budget -- we usually have a big magazine, and I'm down to this poor little piece of paper. But my dinner is on, so why don't we go to the board. Now, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, something we have to do wherever you go. You do it in your own country. We do it here. What I'm going to teach you is the vocabulary for basic shopping. So there -- we have two other videos on engVid that talk about shopping and specific things. You can go and watch those as well. I recommend you do. But for now, just so you can go into a store anywhere that they speak English and get what you want, when you need it, the way you want it, we're going to do this lesson right now. So the first thing you want to do is -- well, you want to know if it's on sale. "Sale" means "cheaper price". So that's what we mean, "is it on sale?" The first thing you can ask, like, "Do you have anything on sale?" For instance: Club Savings. All these foods are on sale. Regular price 20, now 17. I'm saving money. So "sale" really means -- s-a for "save". You're saving money because you're going to pay less than the actual, original price. Which leads me to the next word: "price" and "cost". For some of you guys you're like, "We know these things." But it's actually using it properly or effectively. You can say, "How much does it cost?" which is different than "price". They're similar -- not same. "Cost" means "what do I have to give you". "Price" is what -- what the actual money is. So you can say, "How much does this cost me?" Maybe two hours. And I'm using it differently than price. So similar -- not same. So what is the "price"; what is the "cost". And they will tell you how much money you have to give them, okay? Cool. That comes with the word "pay". When you have a price or cost and you give them money, you must "pay". I work in an English school, and people have to "pay". That means, "Give the money." But you can give not just money, but different things in different forms. So one of the things we can do is, we can use our credit cards. Everybody -- not everyone. A lot of people have it if you're over 18 -- piece of plastic that you give, and they say, "This is worth this much money, and you can use your card to pay with it." Okay? Visa, American Express, MasterCard -- these are credit cards. Debit. In North America, we're in love with our debit cards. It's a card that you get from your bank that has direct access to your account. So not like a credit card where the bank is lending you some money or letting you take some money for now, and you pay it back. That's the "credit card". Debit is right in your account, so if you have $500, they literally -- oh, sorry, "literally" means "really", "in reality", or "actually" -- take the money out of your account. So you can use either debit or credit to pay. And my favourite, favourite of everyone's -- I don't have any: cash. Cash. Money. The old fashion way of doing things, right? Give them the money -- transaction done. "Transaction" is when you do business. You "transact" because one thing goes to another. You get product; they get money. It's a "transaction", okay? Taxes. Every country has them. In some countries, like England -- where they speak the Queen's English -- taxes are included. So if it says $15, it's $15. But folks, I live in Canada. And what you see is not what you get. $15 becomes $16.50. $100 becomes $115. $1,000 is -- $1,150. That's right. Our taxes are not included. So when you come to America or Canada, be careful because you might actually have to pay taxes. You see this, "Incl.": "taxes included". It will be taxes -- it's good. It means price -- what you pay. Most of the times, you won't see anything, and it means "add more money". "Taxes" are what the government gets -- okay. Understand this. It's what the government gets for you buying something because they want their money, too. Anyway.

Learn English Vocabulary: CATS! 🐱 🐈

20:30
Are you a cat lover like me? In this lesson, I will teach you English vocabulary about cat behavior, and also teach you how to describe the personality of cats. I’ll also tell you a few stories about my love of cats. I recommend this lesson to you if you like cats and also if you wish to improve your English listening skills. This is a purr-fect vocabulary lesson for cat people! See how well you understood the lesson by taking the quiz: https://www.engvid.com/learn-english-vocabulary-cats/ Next, watch some other vocabulary videos I've made: 1. TRENDY FASHION WORDS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnIwr2vkb94 2. SPIRITUAL VOCABULARY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52cixIxTKD8 TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. Welcome to my cat lesson. I really love cats, so I'm excited to do this for you today. I'm going to read you a cat poem, I'm going to talk about cat personalities, and I'm going to tell you some stories about my old cat I used to have. Unfortunately, he's dead now, but his name is Mr.... is/was Mr Milo. So, I'll let you know something about Mr Milo as we do the lesson. Let's begin with a poem. This poem is about cat behavior and also about how a cat changes as it gets older. I'll read it to you now. Listen, kitten, Get this clear, This is my chair. I sit here. Okay, kitty We can share; When I'm not home, It's your chair. Listen cat How about If I use it When you're out? So, what happens in this poem is that as the cat gets older, the cat's behavior changes. At first, it's a lovely, sweet kitten, and the cat's owner is in charge. The cat's owner is still the boss, and the cat's owner can say: "This is my chair", when the cat is a kitten; when it's still a baby. Then, later, the power has changed between the cat's owner and the cat. Now, they share the chair; they sit together. The owner sits with the cat, and when the owner goes out, then the cat can sit in the chair by itself. This is when the cat has become a kitty. And then, later, when the cat has become an adult, the power has completely changed and now the cat's owner can't sit in his own chair; he has to ask his cat: "Is it okay if I sit in that chair that you like so much?" when the cat has grown up. So, I really liked that poem about cats, because I think that's one of the main things about their personalities. Unlike a dog that respects you as its master and will always look up to you, that's not guaranteed with a cat. And many cats, as they get older, become very powerful and more powerful even than their owners. So let's look at some cat words now. We've got: "pussy" or "pussycat". The word "pussy" can be a rude word. If we want to say... We can still use it when we're talking about cats, but we have to say it in a sweet way: "pussy". And we can say: "Here, pussy, pussy, pussy" to a cat. It does sound a little bit funny, but you could still say it as kind of a joke or to be sweet. Another cat word is "moggy". A moggy is a cat that... It's not a fancy cat, it's maybe not a very attractive cat; it's a mix of all the different street cats around, and not a beautiful champion cat, but one that you can still love very much. Next we have a "tom" or a "tomcat". This is a male cat. And we have also "pedigree cat". "Pedigree" is a cat that has been bred to look a certain way; to look beautiful. My cat, Mr Milo, was a pedigree cat. He was a Persian cat. He was very, very beautiful, but he wasn't very intelligent as a cat. And perhaps it's true that maybe moggies are more intelligent than... at least more intelligent than Persian cats because they haven't been so inbred to look beautiful. Okay, now let's look at cat behavior. What does a cat do in its general, daily life? First of all, a cat loves to nap. You will often find a cat napping. For example, the cat may nap on a chair, it may nap on your bed. Cats might also do some hunting during the day. So, watch out if there's any wild birds in your garden, or any mice that might be in your garden or in your house because your cat will try to hunt that. Mr Milo was not very good at hunting. No, no, no. It was quite funny. He lived for 17 years, he never caught a bird. He only managed to catch a mouse that was already dying, so it couldn't really... It couldn't really run fast. And Mr Milo was so proud that he... He put his paw on this already half-dead mouse, but that... Mr Milo wasn't... He wasn't much of an aggressive cat. He was just, you know, he was good at looking beautiful, and that was all he did really. Cats also like to groom. "Grooming" is when they lick their... Lick their fur to stay clean. Cats also like to purr. [Purrs] That's how Mr Milo would purr. It was often quite annoying, because he always wanted to do it right there next to your neck, so you would get the feeling of the claws coming out, and also wet-cat breath on your neck and in your ear.
