Mo Farah Running Technique: Learn to Run Faster

I’ve been meaning to make this video about Mo Farah's running style for a long time! What is it about Mo Farah's running technique that makes him such a smooth efficient runner, and olympic legend? What can you learn to help you run faster? Landing his foot beneath the knee in this way, means that Mo doesn’t create the sort of excessive braking force upon contact that many of us recreational runners do. This not only enables him to maximise his existing forward momentum, but also reduces undue stress on the knee joint itself. As you would expect from a world class distance runner, he strikes the ground with a gentle midfoot strike, rather than a heel strike or excessive forefoot strike. It has been well documented that elite distance runners tend to run in the 180-200 strides per minute range, and Mo is no exception. Not only does he have a long flowing stride, with great range of motion shown at the hip, which allows him to cover a great deal of ground with each stride… he also makes well over 180 of these strides per minute when running at 5,000m race pace. It’s this quick cadence which enables him to run at just over 2:30 min/km without overstriding! We can see from viewing Mo side-on that his posture is remarkably upright, with a slight whole body forward lean. The ‘lean’ I would argue is a natural function of speed, rather than something to consciously focus on. 8 Running Drills You Should Do | Run Faster In Your Next Race

In my humble opinion, running drills should be part of every triathlete's programme. They're not only gonna make you faster and stronger, but they're also gonna help with injury prevention. So these are what I call the fantastic four. So we're gonna go through four running drills, four hurdle drills, and then four strides. So for each one of these drills, we're gonna go from the yellow line to the cone, so about 20 or 30 metres of track, and then do a walk back recovery to keep it nice and active. And we're gonna go through each drill twice. So the first drill we got is high knees. This is an old-school favourite. We've all done it at some point. So with high knees, the focus is on driving that knee up, keeping the toe up, and the leg at 90 degrees, and a nice, fast cadence. So after you've done one, you can do a walk or jog back recovery, and then repeat again. And maybe for the last two, you can get halfway, and really pick it up and really open the thrall. So after you've done those twice through, you can go on to the next drill, heel flicks, or butt kicks to our American viewers. For this one, you need to flick your heel to your backside and keeping a nice, shallow knee. So keeping the knee down, and driving that leg up towards your bum. And you also wanna be driving your arms, and keeping your head looking forward. So the next drill is high skips, and with high skips, it's a very plyometric-oriented drill, meaning there's quite a lot of strength involved. And this is really good to translate over to the bike, 'cause it's really focusing in on that leg strength. On this drill, you need to focus on all those key elements again, so the posture, and you're really gonna be driving up through that stationary leg. But then on the landing, you want a nice, soft landing that's quite reactive as well, which is then gonna propel you into your next skip. And remember, it's opposite arm, opposite leg. So the final drill is a variation on a side skip, and this takes a little bit more coordination, so don't worry if you don't get it first time. So to walk you through it, basically you're gonna take your right leg and it's gonna come over the front, and then it's gonna go 'round the back, and then over the front again. But then, to do it at pace, you have to put a bit of a skip in there. The next phase of the fantastic four is four hurdle drills. Hurdles might seem a bit daunting at first, but they're really not. They're great for core control, and coordination. We're not gonna do these at speed, we're gonna do them all pretty much at walking pace. First thing's first, you wanna get it to the right height, so if you've not used hurdles before, I suggest putting it onto the bottom row... To make sure you can actually get over it. Faster runners generally have a shorter contact time as they are able to transfer power quickly and efficiently. Adding short intervals to your training along with plyometrics can improve this. - Another way to improve your running is to run tall. Aligning head, shoulders, hips and legs keeps you tall and balanced and this helps you to utilise big muscle groups and become a more efficient runner. - Mark's next tip is to focus on foot placement. Rather than focussing on how your foot lands, try focussing on where your foot lands. Make sure not to over stride and aim for your feet to land beneath your hips. - Running with tense shoulders can restrict your breathing and prevent you from running effortlessly. It actually does not matter what event we are talking about, as long as there is a potential for peak performance, potential to exceed what we thought was humanly possible – we all get emotionally invested. And due to popularity of running, breaking 2 hours in a marathon is of interest to many for various reasons. Anyone who dares to attempt such a feat deserves respect and support. This tremendous attempt by Eliud Kipchoge, Lelisa Desisa and Zersenay Tadese in May 2017 at Monza racing track in Italy should be the subject of analysis in order for us to understand how it was done, what was good and what was missing so that next steps in this direction are more productive. How to Run (SAFER, FASTER, WITHOUT PAIN!)

Run like an athlete (and build ripped athletic muscle!) http://athleanx.com/x/run-like-an-athlete Running is one of the most fundamental forms of exercise, but it can also be one of the most destructive. There is no doubt that running and learning how to run faster is a high impact activity that can put excessive strain on your joints and ligaments in your ankles, knees, hips and lower back. Even when you learn how to run correctly, and wear the right shoes, it's still hard to completely eliminate the possibility of eventual break down. The root of these running woes usually starts at the point of contact, at heel strike. When you run your foot contacts the ground. Where on the foot you are making that contact can have a huge say on just how bad that running can be for you long term. If you are a heel runner, you tend to make first ground contact with your heel. This is by far one of the most impactful ways to strike the surface and one that sends shockwaves up your leg all the way to the back. There simply is very minimal shock absorption occurring in the heel and therefore this becomes a very tough way to run. The second most common method of striking the ground during running is with the toes. Sprinters are more likely to run on their toes and therefore less likely to experience the high impact forces that are associated with heel strike runners. That said, this does not make them immune to their own set of issues, namely inflammation of the achilles tendon and the development of achilles tendonitis. The third and most optimal method of ground contact is through the midfoot. This occurs when all of your toes are touching the ground (as well as the midfoot) and the heel is off the ground. This gives you the perfect balance of shock absorption and propulsion. Try the quick test in this video to see how you run and to experience what that type of running may be doing to your joints. Jurriaan (light as a feather) is landing lateral on BOF due to foot positioning and active landing. On the left almost crossing over the midline, the right foot lands about on the midline. To keep balance he has to shift his trunk to the lateral side excessively (lateroflexion). His "errors" show more when he runs at slow pace, then there's some active push-off as well. Also arm movement can be improved.

My first tip is that training for the 400 begins before you even step on the track, especially in the off season. The 400 meter dash is one of the most grueling sprints that you'll ever experience. Going on longer runs in the off season, of multiple miles, will help build up your cardiovascular before any time you step on the track. My second tip is to focus on your running form. Because of the length of the 400 meters, it's very easy for your form to break down as you fatigue. Drilling, and drilling proper technique, will help ensure that even as you're becoming more tired, your form stays the same. My final tip is to focus on your upper body strength. While the upper body is not thought about very much during sprinting, it is extremely important in the 400 meter dash. When you're coming down the straightaway to the finish, it's your upper body that will help propel your legs forward. Your ability to pump your arms quicker than your competition will help your legs move faster, and you'll get to the finish line faster overall. Those are my three tips to a faster 400 meter dash.
