Compound Nouns in English: open, hyphenated and closed forms

02:31
A compound noun is a noun that is made with two or more words. A compound noun can have three different forms: - Open form: ( two separate words) - Hyphenated form: (with a hyphen between words) - Closed form: (joined together as one word) A compound noun is usually “noun + noun” or “adjective + noun”. But there are several other combinations. There are no definite rules as to which form to use (open, hyphenated or closed). Different forms are used in different varieties of English. It also depends on your reading and the amount of English you have experienced. However, when you are not sure which form to use, you ought to consult a good dictionary. In compound nouns, the second word is usually (not always) the main word. The first word modifies the second: (it usually tells us more information about it). active voice pasive voice reported speech phrasal verbs irregular verbs modala verbs auxiliary verbs conjunctions grammar vocabulary english grammar past perfect present perfect future perfect simple past simple present past participle compound nouns collective nouns unreal condtionals quatifiers expressions of quantity many vs much many and much a lot of plenty of few and little few vs little a few a little very few very little

Learning Words | Have You Heard About Compound Words | Phonics | Kid's Songs | Jack Hartmann

03:15
Have fun learning about how to make compound words. A compound word is made when two words are joined to form a new word. I show and say the first word and then show and say the second word. We put both words together to form a new compound word. This is great practice for Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes who are beginning to build the foundational language skills that today’s elementary school curriculum requires. Young children will develop their phonological awareness and phonics skills with this compound word song as they hear and see how two words make a new word. In the first part of this video I say the two words and then I say the compound word. In the second part of the video I say both words and leave the compound word answer black for your class to combine and give the compound word answer. This compound word song also helps children develop a good listening ear for the skill of hearing syllables in words. Have You Heard About Compound Words, is a simple, easy way to help make language development enjoyable for young children. It’s a great tool to start strengthening phonological awareness and phonics skills. It’s fun to put words together and create a compound word with a whole new meaning. A fun extension activity is to discuss if the compound word has a similar or different meaning than the words that it is made up from. LYRICS: Have You Heard About Compound Words Take two words and make them one What do you get? A compound word Take two words and make them one What do you get? Why Germans Can Say Things No One Else Can

04:12
German is a wonderfully inventive and bold language, full of gloriously long compound words for emotions and ideas that most languages struggle to allow us to express. But some languages are better than others at crisply naming important sensations. Germans have been geniuses at inventing long – or what get called ‘compound’ – words that elegantly put a finger on emotions that we all know, but that other languages require whole clumsy sentences or paragraphs to express…” You can read more on this and other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/DKT90f MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/OqYUv1 Watch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLself Do you speak a different language to English? Compound It All! from Lee & Low Games

02:52
Do you like word games? Compound It All! is a fun, new game and you can find out all the details in the video! For full review and shopping info► https://ttpm.com/p/24564/lee-low-games/compound-it-all/?ref=yt Product Info: Compound It All!, from Lee & Low Games is for 2-to-8 players, ages 9+. The game comes with 3 decks of 52 cards, a 90-second sand timer, a score-pad, 4 pencils and instructions. The object of the game is to create compound words with two cards. Each round ends when a player is out of cards, and the game is over when a player reaches 200 points. I must admit I found some of the game-play and instructions unclear at times, but overall the game is fun and is a great educational tool. As you may know, compound words are two words that when combined, form a new word. Compound words can be hyphenated, like one-way - have a space between them, like rain check, or be one full word, like bedroom. Compound It All! has three decks - yellow is the easiest, and red is the most challenging. You can play decks separately, or mix them up. The instructions will advise how many cards to deal, depending on the amount of players and decks being used. Players begin a turn by picking from the deck or discard pile. As cards get discarded, make sure they are all displayed. You can pick any card from the discard pile, but you must also take all cards discarded after that one too. If you pick from the discard pile, you must play that compound word immediately. If you have a compound word, place it in front of you, and then end your turn by discarding one card. Play continues until one player has discarded all cards. Each card has a point value. That value should be added or subtracted from your round-total, depending on if it was used to create a compound word that round. My favorite part of the game is the steal. For example, if your opponent plays the compound word "Grandmother" and you have the word "child" in your hand - place "child" over "mother" and steal the cards. Place all three cards in front of you, and get those points at the end of the round. But be careful, because another player can still steal those cards on another turn. Words can be challenged with a dictionary, and the instructions offer some variations of gameplay. Overall I like the game. It's challenging, competitive and fun. But, with limited words might come limited repeat play - so after a few times playing, I encourage using multiple decks for more compound word options. Compound It All! is not as challenging as a game like Scrabble, or as funny as Scattergories - but if you do like word games, you might want check this one out. ✮SEE MORE TOYS✮ ARTSPLASH 3D LIQUID ART: https://ttpm.com/p/23570/mattel/artsplash-3d-liquid-art/?ref=yt DC SUPER HERO GIRLS FROST: https://ttpm.com/p/23551/mattel/dc-super-hero-girls-frost/?ref=yt MARVEL SPIDER-MAN SWING AND SLING SPIDEY: https://ttpm.com/p/23125/just-play/marvel-spiderman-swing-and-sling-spidey/?ref=yt ✮SUBSCRIBE TTPM Toy Reviews✮ https://www.youtube.com/c/ttpm ✮SUBSCRIBE TTPM Baby Gear Reviews✮ https://www.youtube.com/c/ttpmbaby ✮SUBSCRIBE TTPM Pet Toys & Gear Reviews✮ https://www.youtube.com/c/ttpmpets ✮SUBSCRIBE TTPM First Look Toys Unboxing✮ https://www.youtube.com/c/ttpmfirstlooktoys ✮FOLLOW US✮ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TTPMOfficial Twitter: https://twitter.com/ttpm Instagram: https://instagram.com/ttpmofficial/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/ttpmofficial/ Snapchat: TTPMOfficial: https://www.snapchat.com/add/ttpmofficial ✮FOLLOW TTPM Baby✮ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TTPMBaby/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TTPMbaby Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ttpmbaby/ ✮FOLLOW TTPM Pets✮ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TTPMPets Twitter: https://twitter.com/TTPMPets Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ttpmpets/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/ttpmpets/ Disclosure: Toys reviewed by TTPM are selected by the TTPM editorial team from submissions from manufacturers who provide the samples for review consideration.
