When Did Modern Architecture Actually Begin? | ARTiculations

Did modern architecture really begin in the 1920s with the founding of the Bauhaus school? Perhaps. But perhaps the changing landscape of architectural practice and theory throughout the last 200 years is not as straight forward as it seems. 25 Etiquette Rules Every Lady Should Know

07:11
In the age of gender equality, some may consider “ladylike” or “gentlemanly” conduct old-fashioned, snobbish, or just plain unnecessary. But there are still those of us who want to show sophisticated and refined behavior. In this video, we’ll tell you about all the rules of ladylike behavior that are necessary to know in order to be revered by those around you and make your life more comfortable. And for the gentlemen out there feeling left out, you can learn from some of these too! TIMESTAMPS When you have guests 1:03 When you are a guest 1:18 In a restaurant 1:42 Communication rules 2:37 Table manners 3:00 General rules 3:58 Public coatrooms 4:27 Car etiquette 5:05 - If guests come to your home for the first time, show them where the bathroom is so they can freshen up. After that, you can invite them to join the others. - Bring a small gift for the host. It doesn't have to be anything expensive. Try a bottle of wine, a box of cookies, or perhaps something for their vacation home or hobby. - If you need to brush your hair, do it in the ladies' room. Nobody wants to find a hair on their plate or on the table. - Don't forget about etiquette rules at home. For instance, it’s rude to shout to another person from a different room. Besides, you might get used to doing this, and it’ll make guests feel uncomfortable. - Don't take forever choosing the best piece of food on the serving plate. Take the nearest piece to you. You wouldn't want to give the impression of being selfish and greedy, would you? - If you’re on a low-sitting chair, don't cross your legs. Hold your knees together and lean them to the side. This is called “the Duchess Slant”. You can, however, cross your legs at the ankles, also known as “the Cambridge Cross”. Are there any other etiquette rules you consider really important? Then tell us about them in the comments section! SUMMARY So if you feel that you’re a real lady inside but are just a bit confused by all the intricacies of proper behavior, don't worry! Etiquette rules are quite simple if you just give them a try and incorporate them into your lifestyle. Plus, let’s be honest, no matter what gender you are, nobody wants to come off as uncivilized or rude to others! The RP English Accent – What is it, how does it sound, and who uses it?

09:14
In this lesson, you will learn about "Received Pronunciation", or "RP" for short. It's also known as "BBC English", "Oxford English", and "The Queen's English". I'll teach you what this accent means and signifies in England today. You may be surprised to learn that it's not entirely positive. Some people even try to hide their RP accent. I will also give you the history of RP. You'll learn where it comes from and how it developed. You will be able to hear for yourself what this accent sounds like, and how it has changed over time. Check my channel for lots more videos about accent, speaking, and other aspects of English: https://www.youtube.com/user/EnglishBenjamin/videos Go to EngVid for over 1000 more free English lesson videos: https://www.engvid.com/the-rp-english-accent/ TRANSCRIPT Hi there. I'm going to be talking to you today about Received Pronunciation, often shortened to "RP", which is an accent of Great Britain, probably most widely taught as the accent that you're meant to learn in language schools around the world. So I'm going to be talking about the relevance, the place of RP who actually speaks with an RP accent in Britain. Okay, so RP is defined as the regionally neutral middle-class accent of England. Regionally neutral. What that means is by hearing this accent I don't know where in the UK the speaker is from. So they might be from Devon, Wales, London, Yorkshire, anywhere. This accent is not from a particular place. Now, it has also been called over the last 50-100 years the Queen's English because people assume that the Queen speaks with Received Pronunciation. She actually doesn't. The Queen speaks in a very unique accent, which differs from Received Pronunciation. She has a very smart accent. It's not quite the same. BBC English, yes there did used to be a time when most of the news presenters on the BBC were required to have a Received Pronunciation accent, but now society has changed and it is more inclusive, so people from different parts of the United Kingdom, people who have gone to less privileged schools are able to get jobs in the BBC and all other sectors and industries. It's also referred to as Oxford English. So there was a time 30-40 years ago when all the professors at Oxford and when all the students at Oxford and Cambridge would speak with RP. But again, that's changed and there is a drive in schools to try and get the best school... The best students from the government schools into these top universities. What is it, Benjamin? It's an accent. Okay? It's used with Standard English. So if someone is using a lot of slang, a lot of abbreviation, mixing where their words are from, from rap music and stuff, that wouldn't be Standard English. It avoids slang and dialect. Dialect is the language particular to a certain place. For example, a West Country dialect would be particular words from that place. This accent reveals, shows someone's background. Okay? So it shows what kind of life they have had so far. It doesn't show where they are from in the United Kingdom. In fact, only 2 to 3% of the UK population have this accent. You might be wondering: "Do you have this accent, Benjamin?" and the answer to that is: To some degree, but not entirely. So my accent has influences from some Estuary English, and it sort of depends who I am speaking to as to how... How my accent is placed. I'm from Devon and sometimes I will veer towards a Devonian sound, but most of the time I will sound like someone from the southeast of England because that is where I have lived most. So, a history of this accent. In the... Up until the 20th century this accent was associated with wealth and power, but then after World War II society changed in the United Kingdom. We had a Labour Government for the first time, the NHS was created, and people started getting different types of jobs. They started getting better jobs, you started getting a mix of people. And with that, regional accents have become more important. In fact, some people like to disguise an RP accent, so they'll start trying to speak a little bit like this, and start dropping their t's, and say: "Lil" and "innit" and stuff. I'm exaggerating, but it does have negative connotations, the RP accent so some people try to change their voice to fit in. Still not sure what it is? Well, it's speaking in clipped, precise tones. Okay? It sounds quite a sort of serious accent. Maybe some people feel that it sounds quite cold. How has it evolved? It's not the same accent, Received Pronunciation, that it was a hundred years ago. Okay? The accent changes, just as an accent from Yorkshire, or from Wales, and Ireland will change over time. It's not a fixed: This is the accent. How it's been changed recently? The long vowel sounds have become shortened. Why is that? To... As a feeling of self-protection. You don't want to expose yourself by speaking in this ridiculous manner.

Why 80s pop music sounds so good / Learn to write music in the same way

24:07
* Since my use of the chord lettering "H" has caused so much confusion, a little explanation is in order: This originates many hundreds of years ago when some sheet music arrived from Italy into Germany. They mistook the letter "b" for "h" and thus the confusion begun. Many countries in Europe, not only Germany use the letter "H" where many other countries, among them USA would use the letter "B". I come from Scandinavia and we've always used the letter "H" for this chord and note. If I'd known at the time I made this video that so many from other countries would watch the video, I would have used "B" and I have been doing so in every other video coming after this. In short, just use "B" where I say "H" and you"re good to go. "Hm7=Bm7 etc.. * Have you ever wondered why 80s pop music sounds so different from pop music made today? I show you why and I explain how you can make your own tracks the same way. This is primarily a tutorial for beginners in the world of composition and for those who do not yet fully understand the importance of more complex chords and chord progression. I've simplified some chords and theory for this very reason. :) I dissect 4 famous hit songs from the 80s and show you how you can use the same principles to make your OWN hit song. I go through how they used more elegant chords and transitions than they often use today and how melody and chords go together to create the feelings your after. I also show how modulation works to really lift a section in a song. https://open.spotify.com/artist/1dMWiZCc1ZsRZ4GKN2Fcea?si=eFLuF8SKSC2U_l_zOj5qYw https://soundcloud.com/espenkraft https://www.facebook.com/espenkraftmusic https://twitter.com/EspenKraft http://www.espenkraft.com The songs I dissect are: The Neverending Story - Limahl / Giorgio Moroder True - Spandau Ballet If You Leave Me Now - Chicago Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astely My own music pay homage to all synth-pop acts of the 80'ies like Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, Ultravox, OMD, Euryhmics, Duran Duran, Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, Alphaville, A-ha and many more. A use mostly old gear in my music and among them Roland Juno 6, Alpha Juno 2, D550 and JX-8P. Korg DW-8000, Elka EK22, Yamaha DX7 and TX802 and drum machines Yamaha RX11 and Roland TR-626. How to Make an Attractive City

We've grown good at making many things in the modern world - but strangely the art of making attractive cities has been lost. Here are some key principles for how to make attractive cities once again. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/fwFNPV FURTHER READING “Cities are a big deal. We pretty much all have to live in them. We should try hard to get them right. So few cities are nice, very few out of many thousands are really beautiful; embarrassingly the more appealing ones tend to be old, which is weird because we’re mostly much better at making things now...” You can read more on this and other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/6wYBGc MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/RWcyzt Watch more films on CAPITALISM in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLcapitalism Do you speak a different language to English? The Political Spectrum Explained In 4 Minutes

04:36
In the modern political world, the terms ‘left-wing’ and ‘right-wing’ can often be heard and misunderstood. But what do these terms mean and where do they come from? The terms Left and Right were first used in an ideological context during the French Revolution of the 18th century. Those on the left were in support of the revolution and those on the right supported the monarchy. This idea of the left supporting change and the right wanting to keep the status quo continues today and is key in some of their philosophy. Thanks for watching! 8 Hairstyles That Show a Man’s True Character

08:52
If you want to find out what some of the most popular hairstyles on guys mean, check out these great examples that we’ve found. Ladies know that a good haircut can often make it or break it when we're talking about appearance. Well, it’s no different for the fellas either, and the hairstyle they choose can actually tell a lot about their personalities. Of course, this little test shouldn’t be taken too seriously since it’s all in good fun! TIMESTAMPS Long hair 0:40 A crew cut 1:52 No hair. At all 2:50 A middle part 3:45 A pompadour 4:43 Mid-length hair with side-swept bangs 5:38 A fade 6:40 A top knot 7:37 SUMMARY - Long-haired boys are very artistic, so they usually have creative hobbies like playing a musical instrument, drawing, or writing poetry. They’re often introverts as well, enjoying their own company and opening up only to a few trusted people that they can call best friends. - Men sporting a crew cut are also true leaders and incredibly charismatic, which often makes them the center of attention in any group of people. Plus, this haircut is an attribute of bright people that also tend to have a good sense of humor. - No hair: this haircut (if we can call it that) is usually chosen by men who don’t give a damn about new trends and quickly fading fads; they've got no time for any of that nonsense. These men are practical and straight shooters, preferring to tell the bitter truth instead of sweet lies. - A middle part: This haircut is likely to be chosen by an industrious, persistent man, able to pursue his goals without ever stopping or self-doubting. Yes, he knows exactly what he wants and goes for it! It’s especially obvious that a man’s personality plays a “part” in choosing this style if his hair naturally lies with a side part. - Pompadour wearers are extremely enthusiastic about life in general and ready to have a good time and embark on any adventure. It's so comfortable to be around these guys because they’re really easy-going and down-to-earth; they can quickly find common ground with almost anybody in the world! - Mid-length hair with side-swept bangs: It tells us that this person is capable of organizing his life well and accomplishing what he has planned. And this type is very attractive to women, and these guys will use their luscious locks to their advantage. - A fade: this is the haircut of a confident and fashionable man. You’ll also see it on a muscular man in a plaid shirt…with a beard for sure! If you’re looking at someone with a fade and you don’t see any of the above, just wait, you’ll see it soon enough because this man keeps up with the times. - Top knot, man bun, whatever you may call it, this hairstyle is bit controversial. Some women love it, others can’t stand it. One thing for sure is that this style is definitely bold, and not that many people can pull it off. That tells us that a man who's wearing a top knot is full of confidence and unafraid of criticism. Did these descriptions accurately describe you or someone you know? 10 Amazing Robots That Really Exist

10:07
Top most amazing and coolest ROBOTS The family of robot animals from the German developer of robotics Festo is growing. The company presents many new robots, for example: a swarm of ants that can interact with each other, as well as butterflies and dragonflies, which are characterized by all the ease and grace of these insects. When they were created, the company focused not only on their appearance, but also on behavioral characteristics. The ants coordinate with each other all their actions and movements. Each ant, that is 13-centimeter long, has on its belly a radio module, through which precise coordination is carried out. As for butterflies-robots. The weight of each butterfly is only 32 grams, this includes two servos, a pair of small batteries, and a laser-made casing. After one charging that lasts fifteen minutes, butterflies will be able to flutter for about 4 minutes. And their flight looks very impressive. There’re not just butterflies, but a whole system that consists of ten high-speed infrared cameras installed in a room where butterflies fly. They track the infrared markers installed on the robots, transmitting data in real time to the central computer; so that’s how coordination of butterflies is going in the space. You can hardly distinguish these bionic butterflies from the real ones in the room where they fly. Robotic seagulls and dragonflies that can fly just like their living relatives. The seagull was developed in 2012. Later, a dragonfly, that can hang in the air no worse than its natural counterpart was invented. All the details of the dragonfly were made on a 3D printer, and you can control this miracle with a smartphone. Through these developments, the company could edge out the development market of flying drones, but it doesn’t need it. The technology of flying and hovering in the air is worked on these two prototypes. The kangaroo robot. At the core of the BionicKangaroo is the mechanism of "recuperation" - it uses the energy recovered from one jump to help it make another. Real kangaroos quickly got tired and could not jump for a long time without this mechanism. Springs that store mechanical energy on the landing and give it away on the next jump are used in this project. BionicKangaroo that weighs 7 kilograms and highs one meter can make a jump of 80 cm in length and 40 cm in height. The power supply system, that forces it to move, is a pneumatic accumulator. The robot is controlled by a special bandage that reads myoelectric signals from the human forearm. Robot shark. This unmanned underwater facility - a robotic shark length of about one and a half meters and weigh up to 45 kg. Like a real fish, the robot uses the tail to move and control its movement. The robot moves in a fish way, so it is very difficult to distinguish it or at least isolate it on the background of a real marine fauna. It can swim above and dive to depth. Such shark can rich an enemy ship unnoticed. She can spy, repair ships, and arrange sabotage. The robot-spider. From the beginning it is worth mentioning that the spider model was printed using the 3D printer. The engine is integrated with the servo motors of the paws, three in each: the resulting system provides simple control of flexible, plastic movements with convenient coordination from the control panel. He was shown in one of the series of MythBusters. Underwater robot-snake. The mechanical snake is designed to perform maintenance and repair of various mechanisms on the seabed, mainly on oil platforms. It is capable of replacing costly autonomous underwater vehicles, easily slipping into places where cumbersome robots can not reach.
