Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS will follow it early next year. Ubuntu LTS releases come with 5 years of ongoing package updates, bug fixes, hardware improvements, and security patches. A point release is an updated version of the LTS installation image that rolls together all of these updates. This helps to reduce the number of packages and patches that a user has to download after installation. It also ships with a new hardware enablement stack (HWE). This is composed of a recent Linux kernel release, graphics drivers (including mesa 17) and display server. The updated hardware stack in Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS brings Linux 4.10 kernel with it. This is the same kernel available in the Ubuntu 17.04 release. As with all kernel updates this offers improved hardware support, particularly for newer devices, as well as performance improvements, and better power management. The next HWE will likely ship with the kernel from Ubuntu 17.10, which at the time of writing is looking like Linux 4.13. Debian 9 comes with over 51,000 binary packages, a new record for a stable Debian release. Debian Website: https://www.debian.org/ Download Debian 9 GNOME Live Install ISO Image: https://www.debian.org/CD/live/ What is GNOME Desktop? GNOME is a desktop environment that is composed entirely of free and open-source software. GNOME was originally an acronym for GNU Network Object Model Environment. Its target operating system is Linux, but it is also supported on most derivatives of BSD. GNOME is developed by the GNOME Project, which is composed of both volunteers and paid contributors. Administrators and those in security-sensitive environments can be comforted in the knowledge that the X display system no longer requires "root" privileges to run. GNOME Website: https://www.gnome.org/ VirtualBox Guest Additions Features The Guest Additions offer the following features below: - Improved Video Support: While the virtual graphics card which VirtualBox emulates for any guest operating system provides all the basic features, the custom video drivers that are installed with the Guest Additions provide you with extra high and non-standard video modes as well as accelerated video performance. - Mouse Pointer Integration: This provides with seamless mouse support. A special mouse driver would have to be installed in the guest OS, which would exchange information with the actual mouse driver on the host. The special mouse driver then allows users to control the guest mouse pointer. - Time Synchronization: With the Guest Additions installed, VirtualBox can ensure that the guest's system time is better synchronized with that of the host. - Shared Folders: These provide an easy way to exchange files between the host and the guest. - Seamless Windows: With this feature, the individual windows that are displayed on the desktop of the virtual machine can be mapped on the host's desktop, as if the underlying application was actually running on the host. - Shared Clipboard: With the Guest Additions installed, the clipboard of the guest operating system can optionally be shared with your host operating system. We also install Guest Additions on Lubuntu 16.04 LTS for better performance and usability features: Automatic Resizing Guest Display, Shared Folder, Seamless Mode and Shared Clipboard, Improved Performance and Drag and Drop. Steps: 1- Create Virtual Machine on Oracle VirtualBox 2- Start Lubuntu 16.04.3 LTS Installation 3- Install VirtualBox Guest Additions 4- Test Guest Additions Features: Automatic Resizing Guest Display and Shared Clipboard What is Lubuntu? Lubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavor based on the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE). The project’s goal is to provide a lightweight yet functional distribution. Lubuntu specifically targets older machines with lower resources, but also runs great on newer hardware. Along with a simple but usuable graphical user interface, Lubuntu comes with a wide variety of applications chosen for their small footprint so you can browse, email, chat, play, and be productive. Lubuntu 16.04.3 LTS New Features and Improvements Lubuntu 16.04.3 is a set of images produced for convenience so that a fresh install of the latest Lubuntu LTS does not require as many updates after install (as Lubuntu continues to release Stable Release Updates and security fixes to make your experience as smooth as possible and to fix any bugs, if you want to help us out with this, see below, we always need more help), but is not a new major release of Lubuntu in and of itself. If you do system updates regularly, you are already running Lubuntu 16.04.3 LTS, and if you install Lubuntu on a system using a Lubuntu 16.04.2 LTS image or a previous point release and do system updates, that system will then be running Lubuntu 16.04.3 LTS. Arch Linux is an independently developed Linux distribution targeted at competent Linux users. It uses pacman, its home-grown package manager, to provide updates to the latest software applications with full dependency tracking. Arch Linux uses a rolling release model, such that a regular system update is all that is needed to obtain the latest Arch software. The installation images released by the Arch team are simply up-to-date snapshots of the main system components. The default install provides a solid base that enables users to create a custom installation. In addition, the Arch Build System (ABS) provides a way to easily build new packages, modify the configuration of stock packages, and share these packages with other users via the Arch Linux user repository. Arch Linux Website: https://www.archlinux.org/ Download Arch Linux ISO: https://www.archlinux.org/download/ Arch Linux Minimum System Requirements Arch Linux should run on any x86_64-compatible machine with a minimum of 512 MB RAM. A basic installation with all packages from the base group should take less than 800 MB of disk space. As the installation process needs to retrieve packages from a remote repository, a working internet connection is required. What is GNOME Desktop? GNOME is a desktop environment that is composed entirely of free and open-source software. GNOME was originally an acronym for GNU Network Object Model Environment. Its target operating system is Linux, but it is also supported on most derivatives of BSD. GNOME is developed by the GNOME Project. GNOME Website: https://www.gnome.org/ GNOME 3 Desktop Minimum System Requirements - 1 GHz processor - 1GB RAM (system memory) - 7 GB of hard-drive space - VGA capable of 1024x768 screen resolution Hope you found it informative and useful.
