The Call to Prayer(AZAAN) The Azan is uttered in a loud, albeit sweet melodious, voice to announce to the faithful that it is time for the Obligatory Prayer and to invite them to offer the prayers. Those who perform Azan are known as 'Muezzin.' The honour of being the first Muezzin goes to Hazrat Bilal(R.A.), a black slave who converted to Islam. He had a very sweet, resonant and musical voice. He was appointed as Muezzin by the Prophet(peace be upon him) of Islam. The appointment of a black slave as the first person to call Muslims for prayers, shows that in Islam all human beings are treated as equals. Rich or poor, black or white, short or tall - all are equal in the eyes of Allah. It is the piety of each individual that makes the difference. Azan is recited in a loud voice by the Muezzin facing the direction of the Ka'ba in the following words, which are said in the order mentioned: "Allahu Akbar" - recited FOUR times. Meaning, "Allah is the Greatest."(four times) "Ash-hadu an la ilaha ill-Allah" - recited TWO times. Meaning, "I bear witness that there is none worthy of being worshipped except Allah."(twice) "Ash-hadu anna Muhammad-ar-Rasoolullah" - recited TWO times. Meaning, "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah."(recited twice) "Hayya 'alas-Salah" - recited TWO times. Meaning, "Come to prayer."(turning the face alone to the right and saying it twice) "Hayya 'alal-falah" - recited TWO times. Meaning, "Come to Success."(turning the face alone to the left and saying it twice) "Allahu Akbar" - recited TWO times. Meaning, "Allah is the Greatest" "La-Ilaha Il-Allah"- recited once. Meaning, "There is no other object of worship except Allah."

I praise Thee, Lord, for cleansing me from sin; Fulfill Thy word and make me pure within; Fill me with fire, where once I burned with shame; Grant my desire to magnify Thy name. Lord, take my life, and make it wholly Thine; Fill my poor heart with Thy great love divine; Take all my will, my passion, self and pride; I now surrender, Lord, in me abide. O Holy Ghost, revival comes from Thee; Send a revival, start the work in me; Thy Word declares Thou wilt supply our need; For blessings now, O Lord, I humbly plead.

President Donald Trump opened his first full day as president Saturday at a national prayer service, the final piece of transition business for the nation's new chief executive before a promised full-on shift into governing. Trump and his wife, Melania, and Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen, sat in a front pew at Washington National Cathedral for the morning service after a day of pomp, pageantry and protests that accompanied his Friday inauguration. The interfaith service is a tradition for new presidents and is hosted by the Episcopal parish, but the decision to hold a prayer session for Trump sparked debate among Episcopalians opposed to his policies. The service took place as throngs of women, many of them wearing bright pink, pointy-eared hats, descended on the nation's capital and other cities around the world Saturday for marches organized to push back against the new president. Trump had no speaking role at the service. Bishop Harry Jackson of Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Maryland, asked God to grant the president, vice president and Cabinet members "wisdom and grace in the exercise of their duties." Jackson also asked that Trump and Pence "serve all people of this nation and promote the dignity and freedom of every person." After church, Trump planned to visit the CIA for a meeting with members of the nation's intelligence community that could be fraught with tension. Trump has sharply criticized top U.S. intelligence officials over their conclusions that Russia interfered in the 2016 election on his behalf, as well as over leaks about classified briefings he received in the weeks before his he was sworn into office on Friday. Trump has signaled an intention to make a quick and clean break from the Obama administration. Before dancing with the new first lady at three inaugural balls Friday night, Trump signed an executive order aimed at former President Barack Obama's health care law. The order notes that Trump plans to seek the law's "prompt repeal." It allows the Health and Human Services Department and other federal agencies to delay implementing parts of the law that might impose a "fiscal burden" on states, health care providers, families or individuals. Trump also cleared the way for members of his national security team to take their places. He signed legislation granting James Mattis, his pick for defense secretary, a one-time exception from federal law barring former U.S. service members who have been out of uniform for less than seven years from holding the top Pentagon job. The restriction is meant to preserve civilian control of the military. Mattis, 66, retired from the Marine Corps in 2013.

A Muslim prayer service being held at the Washington National Cathedral for the first time was briefly disrupted by a protester Friday afternoon. "Jesus Christ died on that cross over there!" a woman said loudly, immediately after beginning announcements were made. He is the reason why we are to worship only him. Jesus Christ is our lord and savior!" Mont. Co. Schools Nix Names of Religious Holidays on Calendar As she spoke, a man attempted to touch her arm, but she moved away from him several times. She continued in a loud voice, "We have built, and allowed you here in mosques across this country. Why can't you worship in your mosque, and leave our churches alone?"The protester was then escorted out of the cathedral, News4's Kristin Wright reported. She allowed two men to remove her without incident, but she raised her voice once she was taken to an adjoining space. http://www.rosaryparts.com offers this video so we can pray a Rosary for the people of the Philippines. Typhoon Haiyan has created a humanitarian disaster in the Philippines. The death toll is continuing to grow and the suffering will continue for many months. We offer this short history of the beginnings of Christianity in the Philippines and the Manila Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica so we may all continue to pray for our Christian brothers and sisters who have been effected by this disaster. Manila has a long history of trade and commerce due to its location. It came under the rule of the Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi in 1571. The Spanish brought their culture and religion and would rule the area for three centuries. The original Diocese of Manila was created by Pope Gregory XIII in 1579 and was part of the Bishopric of Mexico like many other of the Spanish Colonies. The Manila Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica, is dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. It is the seat of the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila . The Cathedral began as the Church of Manila, founded by Padre Juan de Vivero in 1571. It is located in the historic Intramuros district of Manila. The Cathedral has been damaged or destroyed a number of times over the centuries by fire, natural disasters and even bombardment in World War II. The current Cathedral was built in 1958. It is the eighth edition and was designed by Fernando Ocampo in a style that includes Neo-Romanesque and Byzantine elements. The Cathedral's facade replicates the previous Cathedral with a large rose glass window and prominent statues of the Saints sculpted in Roman travertine stone. Each section of the rose window is dedicated to one of the Apostles. The most famous statues include St. Francis Xavier and St Rose of Lima, patron saint of Latin America and the Philippines. Since earlier Cathedrals had been destroyed or greatly damaged by earthquakes, the 7 carillon bells which weigh many tons, and were cast by in Heidelberg Germany by Friedrich Schilling, were placed on the ground level. There is a famous life size full bronze statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception inside the cathedral. Corazon C. Aquino, 11th President of the Philippines, was honored by being the first woman to lie in state in the Cathedral. The Cathedral was declared a minor basilica by Blessed Pope John Paul II in 1981. This week pray a Rosary for the people of the Philippines and the healing so needed after this devastating Typhoon.

“I left religion when I was twelve, but I never left praying. Many poems have stayed with me in my life and a lot of them were like little prayers.” In this video Patti Smith explains how poetry can be a means for staying in contact with a higher energy. Smith was brought up with prayer as an important part of her life. In this interview she says: “You can pray anywhere, there are beautiful cathedrals and churches everywhere - or at the sea, or in a field, or falling asleep at night. It’s a way of staying in contact, sometimes just with yourself, sometimes with a higher energy and sometimes with our loved ones. And prayer to me is just a natural part of being.” She also talks about Arthur Rimbaud and how important she considers his poetry. Patti Smith (b.1946) is an award-winning American punk rock musician, poet and visual artist, who became a highly influential figure in the New York City punk rock scene with her debut album ‘Horses’ in 1975. Smith fuses rock and poetry in her work, and has been dubbed the ”punk poet laureate” as well as ”the godmother of punk.” In 2007 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2010 Rolling Stone magazine put her on the 47th place of their list of 100 Greatest Artists. Among her many albums are ’Horses’ (1975), ’Radio Ethiopia’ (1976), ’Easter’ (1978), ’Gone Again’ (1996) and ’Banga’ (2012). Smith is also the author of several books, including ’Woolgathering’ (1992), ’Just Kids’ (2010) – which won the National Book Award and describes her relationship to her lover and friend, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe – and ’M Train’ (2015). Patti Smith was interviewed by Christian Lund at the Louisiana Literature festival at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in August 2012. Cathedral Lit :http://www.shmoop.com/cathedral-carver/ Can you imagine what it would be like to be without the gift of sight? Go ahead - put your hands over your eyes and walk around the house for a bit. In Cathedral, the narrator helps a blind man in vision a cathedral by guiding him to draw one. That's cute, but inquiring minds want to know, why a cathedral? Is the story evoking the importance of religion? Does the author think that cathedrals are the most glorious man-made sight? Are they just extremely peaceful? Maybe if you pray you'll be able to figure it out.
