Design Systems, Pattern Libraries & Style Guides... Oh My!
Style Guides, Pattern Libraries, and Design systems are all anyone is talking about lately, and for good reason. The complex geometry of Islamic design - Eric Broug
View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/the-complex-geometry-of-islamic-design-eric-broug In Islamic culture, geometric design is everywhere: you can find it in mosques, madrasas, palaces, and private homes. And despite the remarkable complexity of these designs, they can be created with just a compass to draw circles and a ruler to make lines within them. Eric Broug covers the basics of geometric Islamic design. Lesson by Eric Broug, animation by TED-Ed.

John Ousterhout: "A Philosophy of Software Design" | Talks at Google
John Ousterhout, Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University, discusses complex techniques on how to become a more confident coder. John is excited to announce that he just published the first edition of a new book on software design, based on material from a software design class he has been teaching at Stanford for the last several years. Prior to joining Stanford, John spent 14 years in industry where he founded two companies, preceded by another 14 years as a professor at Berkeley. Over the course of his career, Professor Ousterhout has built a number of influential systems (Sprite OS, Tcl.Tk, log structured file systems, Raft, RAMcloud, etc) and has taught several courses on software design. In this talk, he synthesizes these experiences into an insightful and provocative discussion on how to (and how not to) design software. Get the book: https://goo.gl/ywYJ3i

Pattern Drafting Tutorial – Contouring with Example • Elewa
*** EXAMPLE OF HOW TO USE CONTOURING AT 3:55 *** I will be teaching you what contouring is used for and how to use the guidelines drawn onto your front and back bodice. Contouring is a concept that's sometimes hard to understand so I'll try to break it down as easily as possible so that you can understand. Contouring is used to remove excess fabric that can occur from certain adjustments, such as lowering a neckline or armhole, which then avoids gaping. I do go through this video pretty quickly to avoid it being 1000 minutes long, so if there isn't anything you're clear about, please, don't hesitate to comment below for clarification. To use contour guidelines, where your new adjusted pattern crosses the lines, cut away the sections between and then close, so that the lines of the circles touch. Contouring is something that can be very useful when making pattern adjustments, I personally love it when make strapless garments as they fit around the bust much better. Be open to experimenting with different lengths to see how the guidelines can better suit your body. Examples of tutorials where I have used contouring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiDvDAFIQqc Basic bodice block tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WVOhnq1cro *** This video is best viewed in 1080p in fullscreen because of the thin lines of the pencil *** You can find all the materials you need to start drafting your own patterns at Minerva Crafts' website http://bit.ly/2xSmA5X. Pluggable Libs Through Design Patterns
Speaker: Filipe Ximenes Design Patterns are a standardized way to talk about certain code architectures. They've been first formally introduced through the book "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software" and we are still discovering new ones. They are such a good way to architecture code that even Python comes with some of them, such as the iterator, built into the language. In this talk I'll will walk the audience through 3 popular design patterns: Adapter, Strategy and Pipeline. Some of the best examples of use cases for those are open source libraries. Open source libraries heavily rely on patterns to allow flexibility and pluggability. A very good example of this if the Python Social Auth (PSA) project. PSA allows applications to integrate with a huge number of web authentication service providers. It works with frameworks such as Django, Flask, Tornado and Pyramid and knows how to handle OAuth1, OAuth2, OpenID and SAML (and its slight customizations through each provider). This kind of flexibility is only possible because PSA has design patterns in its core. Before observing patterns in the libraries, attendees will be presented to real world situations being tackled with poorly designed software. This will give context before we move on to understand how we can use a pattern to improve the quality of it and a give a more detailed explanation on how it works. This will lead to examples of tools that implement that pattern and an exploration of the architecture and the source code.

SOLID Design Principles Introduction
In this video we will discuss 1. SOLID Acronym and Introduction 2. SOLID design principles 3. Why SOLID SOLID Introduction 1. SOLID principles are the design principles that enable us manage most of the software design problems 2. The term SOLID is an acronym for five design principles intended to make software designs more understandable, flexible and maintainable 3. The principles are a subset of many principles promoted by Robert C. Martin 4. The SOLID acronym was first introduced by Michael Feathers SOLID Acronym S : Single Responsibility Principle (SRP) O : Open closed Principle (OSP) L : Liskov substitution Principle (LSP) I : Interface Segregation Principle (ISP) D : Dependency Inversion Principle (DIP) Single Responsibility Principle 1. Robert C. Martin expresses the principle as, "A class should have only one reason to change” 2.Every module or class should have responsibility over a single part of the functionality provided by the software, and that responsibility should be entirely encapsulated by the class Liskov Substitution Principle 1. Introduced by Barbara Liskov state that “objects in a program should be replaceable with instances of their sub-types without altering the correctness of that program” 2. If a program module is using a Base class, then the reference to the Base class can be replaced with a Derived class without affecting the functionality of the program module 3. We can also state that Derived types must be substitutable for their base types Open/Closed Principle 1. “Software entities should be open for extension, but closed for modification” 2. The design and writing of the code should be done in a way that new functionality should be added with minimum changes in the existing code 3. The design should be done in a way to allow the adding of new functionality as new classes, keeping as much as possible existing code unchanged Interface Segregation Principle 1. “Many client-specific interfaces are better than one general-purpose interface” 2.We should not enforce clients to implement interfaces that they don't use. Instead of creating one big interface we can break down it to smaller interfaces Dependency Inversion Principle 1. One should “depend upon abstractions, [not] concretions" 2. Abstractions should not depend on the details whereas the details should depend on abstractions 3. High-level modules should not depend on low level modules If we don’t follow SOLID Principles we 1. End up with tight or strong coupling of the code with many other modules/applications 2. Tight coupling causes time to implement any new requirement, features or any bug fixes and some times it creates unknown issues 3. End up with a code which is not testable 4. End up with duplication of code 5. End up creating new bugs by fixing another bug 6. End up with many unknown issues in the application development cycle Following SOLID Principles helps us to 1. Achieve reduction in complexity of code 2. Increase readability, extensibility and maintenance 3. Reduce error and implement Reusability 4. Achieve Better testability 5. Reduce tight coupling Solution to develop a successful application depends on Architecture : choosing an architecture is the first step in designing application based on the requirements. Example : MVC, WEBAPI, MVVM..etc Design Principles : Application development process need to follow the design principles Design Patterns : We need to choose correct design patterns to build the software If you are confused on how we can apply these design principles in the application development? Don’t worry as we are going to take a look at them in greater details in the upcoming videos. In the next video we will discuss single responsibility principle in detail with a sample example. Introduction to Software Architecture
This lecture, recorded at the University of Colorado Boulder in September 2012, is an introduction to the major concepts of software architecture. The audience consisted of 70 seniors majoring in computer science. It is based on material taken from the book Just Enough Software Architecture. Most developers have no formal education in software architecture, yet a system's architecture has a big influence on its success. Software architecture has been intensively studied for more than twenty years now and studying it will help you do a better job of designing systems, give you names for the concepts and patterns, and help you choose between competing designs. Slides: http://georgefairbanks.com/assets/pdf/Intro-to-SA-CUBoulder-2012-09-18.pdf Book hardback: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0984618104 e-Book: http://georgefairbanks.com/e-book/ Major topics covered in this lecture include: * Architects focus on system qualities * Tradeoffs * Architecture, architecting, architects * Views * Quality attributes * Analysis * Standard notations * Guiderails * Architectural styles * Conceptual model * Engineering with models * Canonical model structure * Models and code * Process and risk The pacing of the lecture is considerably slower than when I give this lecture to industry practitioners because undergraduates need to be provided with more examples to ground the lessons. This lecture was just over 2 hours but with a different audience it would be about 75 minutes. I hope you enjoy it.

Design principles for efficient, repeated jumpgliding
Design principles for efficient, repeated jumpgliding by Alexis Lussier Desbiens, Morgan T Pope, David L Christensen, Elliot W Hawkes and Mark R Cutkosky - http://bdml.stanford.edu/ Abstract: Combined jumping and gliding locomotion, or 'jumpgliding', can be an efficient way for small robots or animals to travel over cluttered terrain. This paper presents functional requirements and models for a simple jumpglider which formalize the benefits and limitations of using aerodynamic surfaces to augment jumping ability. Analysis of the model gives insight into design choices and control strategies for higher performance and to accommodate special conditions such as a slippery launching surface. The model informs the design of a robotic platform that can perform repeated jumps using a carbon fiber spring and a pivoting wing. Experiments with two different versions of the platform agree with predictions from the model and demonstrate a significantly greater range, and lower cost-of-transport, than a comparable ballistic jumper. How a Microwave Oven Works
Bill details how a microwave oven heats food. He describes how the microwave vacuum tube, called a magnetron, generates radio frequencies that cause the water in food to rotate back and forth. He shows the standing wave inside the oven, and notes how you can measure the wavelength with melted cheese. He concludes by describing how a magnetron generates radio waves. You can learn more about the microwave oven from the EngineerGuy team's new book Eight Amazing Engineering Stories http://www.engineerguy.com/elements

This course will give you high level insight into design patterns from the book "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software", which is the reference on the subject. In our experience, we believe that understanding the context (with a real world example) of a Design Pattern is more important than the precise implementation details. In this quick course on Design Patterns, you will learn the basics of GOF Design Patterns. Each Design Pattern will be explained in 2 to 3 minutes with a Real World Example. You will not be bored with implementation details of each and every Design Pattern. We would touch upon them sometimes but for the most part we would focus on Real World Examples. You will learn about Creation, Structural and Behavioral Design Patterns. Design Patterns discussed : Decorator, Factory Method, Strategy, Singleton, Adapter, Facade, Template Method, Iterator, Observer, Command, Builder, Chain of Responsibility, Memento, Visitor, State, Flyweight, Mediator, Prototype, Proxy. Two ideas game-design schools do not teach you
A 1st take unedited reflection about 2 ideas that my game-design program did not teach me (I recently graduated). Summary: - Design many many games (50+) and go all-in on the game that becomes commercially successful (e.g. Rovio games with Angry Birds). - A good game-design heuristic is via metaphors, e.g. digitize whatever real life activity you have in mind, tweak it and you have yourself a game.
