Imagine how would you manage Factory-level Cost Reduction if your key customer demands an immediate 10% Price Reduction on your best selling Product ? Do you want to learn how Toyota would do it? If you manage by the old traditional 10% method, you will simply tell your managers to reduce costs by 10%? This method was good enough when manufacturing was simpler and competition less fierce. You need a better method now because modern factories make small-lot, high-mix, ever more complex Products over 10 to 20 processes. The partly-processed products going from process to process encounters various problems due to equipment losses and production wastes. Findiing and measuring them can reveal the hidden Cost Reduction opportunities for your Continuos Improvements Teams. How? The Toyota Motor's Kai'zen Target Costing Method for cost reduction (http://maaw.info/ArticleSummaries/ArtSumTanaka94.htm) complements Continous Improvement activities. It is now available in a software and enhanced with our proprietary Modeling Algorithms for searching out Product Cost Reduction opportunities. Read more at http://bit.ly/2kykqT6. Dorota Shortell, CEO at Simplexity, describes the exponential relationship between design changes and the cost of your design; about 75 percent of the cost of the product is dictated by the initial design and the architecture that's chosen. Visit us at http://www.simplexitypd.com/next-steps Find us online: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/simplexity-product-development-inc-?trk=top_nav_home Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SimplexityPD Twitter: https://twitter.com/SimplexityPD Some companies come to us and they have a prototype already developed and they say, “hey can you guys just look at this prototype, work out any bugs, and release it for high-volume manufacturing.” Now while that sounds great and sounds really easy, most times when that happens that prototype really isn’t designed and ready for high-volume manufacturing. And companies often wonder “well why not, we have one that works, why can’t we just make a hundred thousand of them?” And really the key is in understanding design and the design process, is that there’s things that you have to bake from the very start, you have to bake those in and you have to understand how to design a product, how to design a part for the right manufacturing processes that will be used at the end, and you have to do that right at the beginning. So not only do you have to think about, is the part going to be machined or molded, you have to think about how it is going to be assembled, how is it going to be tested? Those disciplines together designed for manufacturing, designed for assembly, designed for test, are now known as ‘DFX’. And looking at DFX is a big component of having a successful product that’s going to be able to scale for high-volume manufacturing. One of the other things that’s also important is the components that are actually in that design and in that prototype. So if someone selects a sensor that costs ten dollars, it’s an industrial sensor, not realizing that the cellphone industry for example, has the exact same functionality, maybe not quite the industrial specifications, and it only costs fifty cents, you have to start over and do some work again ultimately saving money at the end. So when should you start considering design for high-volume manufacturing? Right now, if you haven’t started it start right now no matter where you are in the design process. The longer you wait the more it’s going to cost. There’s an exponential relationship. Design changes upfront don’t cost that much, but once you start tooling and manufacturing, each design change starts costing you more and more and more. About 75% of the cost of a product is dictated by the initial design and the architecture that’s chosen. Waste cost recovery program for your restaurant or business with Pack-A-Drum Manually Operated Compactor system. What is the Pack-A-Drum System? What will it do for your Business? Running a sustainable, responsible restaurant business often breeds the innovations such as Pack-A-Drum that are the lifeblood of any successful company. It requires forward thinking leadership, and many of the first-movers in the restaurant business are already starting to reap the rewards a trash management system can provide. (less energy used, less water & chemicals to clean the interior/exterior property and lowered carbon footprint) They are developing new processes for their waste & recycling in a way so their businesses operate in order to profit responsibly. Pack-A-Drum is a manually operated compactor/deflator made of stainless steel and aluminum for long life. The compactor/deflator provides approximately a 40% to 65% volume reduction of your waste. The system is used for waste reduction, recycling plastics shrink wrap, plastic jugs and other processing items. Savings occurs because Pack-A-Drum facilitates the reduction in dumpster size and/or the number of pickups per week, without incurring a compacted trash penalty. The ever increasing need for security, safety and theft control in the restaurant industry is addressed by the Pack-A-Drum system approach to trash management. Reduces Trash Hauling Expenses by 40 -- 65% & landfill size Decreases Trips to Dumpster = Increased Security (Less back door operations of 3 to 4 per day & redirect over 90 to 121 hours per year) Reduces Trash Storage Space & Internal Theft from exposing the trash run with clear liners and platform staging/transfer cart or lift system. Lower food costs or product costs via theft. Enhanced Productivity occurs because of the Pack-A-Drum's System Approach to moving, deflating, staging and transporting waste with less volume and use of our systems for transport of the deflated trash. Savings Projections are guaranteed prior to Purchase, lease or rental of the Pack-A-Drum Manual Compactor System. Up to 70% of the lifecycle cost of a new product is determined during the design phase. So understanding cost implications of design decisions can have a tremendous impact on a product’s final cost. Yet engineers often shy away from cost tradeoffs during the early stages of design because they don’t have a way to quantify costs or don’t want to wait for vendor quotes. Now, SEER costing model integrations to CATIA put the power of cost trades in the hands of designers and manufacturing engineers, producing cost estimates directly within CATIA for: • Composite parts • Machined parts • Sheet metal parts Join Galorath for this webinar that will illustrate how our SEER Integrations to CATIA can help you: • Evaluate cost-saving alternatives while still meeting design requirements • Establish cost targets and achieve them • Know how each design alternative or trade will impact costs, suppliers and time to market • Avoid costly supply chain surprises downstream • Identify opportunities for cost avoidance Design decisions should be centered on functionality that meets the prescribed technical and cost requirements. Being able to get from CAD to Cost provides the path to achieve these goals. The SEER CATIA Integrations generate comprehensive estimates from CATIA v5 solid models on the CATIA desktop for setup, direct, inspection and rework labor for Machined, Sheet Metal and Composite parts. Learn how to make faster, better informed decisions, and the agility to understand the implications of your design decisions.

Steve Mott, VP of business development at Simplexity, discusses the ways in which Simplexity's expertise allows them to reduce the cost of a motion system by 50 percent. Please visit us at http://www.simplexitypd.com/motion-technology/. Find us online: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/simplexity-product-development-inc-?trk=top_nav_home Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SimplexityPD Twitter: https://twitter.com/SimplexityPD Over the last 10 years, Simplexity has perfected the process of developing cost-optimized highly reliable motion subsystems. I’d like to outline the process we follow when we design these systems. First, consider that in a motion subsystem there are typically five key components: base structure, guideway bearings, a drive element, motors, and a feedback method. Now let’s take a look at just the drive element selection process. For the drive component, we have 5 options to choose from: ball screw, lead screw, belt drive, gear rack, and linear motor. Now in order to determine which technology to use, we look at key design parameters such as: accuracy, thermal stability, part cost, vibration immunity, payload, and required maintenance. Now because thermal stability is critical in this particular application, we can drop the belt and gear rack options. And because of cost constraints we can drop the ball screw and linear servo options. So, leadscrew technology emerges as the right choice in this application. To achieve a complete design solution we repeat this process through the other five component areas. And following our design process, we were able to achieve a 50% BOM cost-reduction in this two-axis motion subsystem which is used in genomic sequencing. If you’re interested in how Simplexity might apply this process to your design, just give us a call or send us an email to [email protected] Simplexity provides engineering design services across a range of industries. Our "simpler is better" engineering approach reduces costs while improving the lifecycle of your product, saving you money in development, manufacturing and product sustainability. CA Final Costing Revision: Cost Reduction vs Cost Control,Pareto Analysis,Target Costing Cost reduction is the process used by companies to reduce their costs and increase their profits. Depending on a company’s services or product, the strategies can vary. Every decision in the product development process affects cost. Pareto Analysis is a statistical technique in decision-making used for the selection of a limited number of tasks that produce significant overall effect. It uses the Pareto Principle (also known as the 80/20 rule) the idea that by doing 20% of the work you can generate 80% of the benefit of doing the entire job. Take quality improvement, for example, a vast majority of problems (80%) are produced by a few key causes (20%). This technique is also called the vital few and the trivial many. Target costing is an approach to determine a product’s life-cycle cost which should be sufficient to develop specified functionality and quality, while ensuring its desired profit. It involves setting a target cost by subtracting a desired profit margin from a competitive market price. A target cost is the maximum amount of cost that can be incurred on a product, however, the firm can still earn the required profit margin from that product at a particular selling price. Target costing decomposes the target cost from product level to component level. Through this decomposition, target costing spreads the competitive pressure faced by the company to product’s designers and suppliers. Target costing consists of cost planning in the design phase of production as well as cost control throughout the resulting product life cycle. The cardinal rule of target costing is to never exceed the target cost. However, the focus of target costing is not to minimize costs, but to achieve a desired level of cost reduction determined by the target costing process. Value engineering (VE) is a systematic method to improve the "value" of goods or products and services by using an examination of function. Value, as defined, is the ratio of function to cost. Value can therefore be manipulated by either improving the function or reducing the cost. It is a primary tenet of value engineering that basic functions be preserved and not be reduced as a consequence of pursuing value improvements. Did you like our video? Give it a Thumbs-up!
