Line it up with your heel. The trail leg should be to the side also be bent to 90 degrees, with the heel lining up with the back leg. When you’re in the position, extend your back. Try to get your belly button to hover over your knee. If you lean forward keeping your chest up high, you’ll get a deep stretch in your lead leg. What you’re stretching here is the gluteus minimus muscle 90/90 Trail leg Stretch From the same position, you can work on the trail leg. You’re going to work it into an internal rotation position. Put your hands on your chest. Square yourself off with the trail leg. If you can’t, post your arm behind you and walk yourself into the position. This stretch is a good indicator of hip health. If you can’t get into this position or if you have a pinching pain in this position, you should talk with a professional to make sure there’s nothing intrinsically wrong. Hinge: Keep all of your weight on your back leg. Post up on the toe, swing the leg open and keep the lead leg down as long as you can. Point your toes down and swing your leg back up to bring your hip back into internal position. Accurate and easy measurement of shoulder strength would help identify deconditioning trends and monitor the effects of injury or rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to document variations in shoulder abduction strength in football players during a 10-week seasons using a portable strain gauge device. Bilateral shoulder abduction strength of 59 players was measured at the season's start, midpoint and near end. Strength dropped approximately 28% on each side, with most of the loss being in the first 5 weeks. The strength loss was also ore rapid on the left side, making the side-to-side strength ration unstable throughout the season. It is recommended that in-season shoulder girdle strengthening be emphasized and that if shoulder strength measurements are to be used for exercise prescription or injury rehabilitation purposes, serial baseline measurements be made during the season. Dance and ballet schools go deeper and include various foot, ankle, and toes exercises and also front of the lower leg stretches. In reality any athlete can become more mobile and agile with increased flexibility of the lower leg muscles and joints. While this applies mostly to skills, which involve ground reaction forces, others can benefit as well. For example martial artists with foot position for kicks (plantar flexion for the roundhouse kick or dorsi flexion for the side kick), dance foot position (dorsi flexion in plie and plantar flexion in pointe), etc. Many power lifters, olympic lifters and bodybuilders are able to get deeper into the squats and with proper form, as the results of better ankle flexibility. Like all the other kinesiological stretching programs, the foot and ankle flexibility program takes each movement apart into the participating muscles. There are various muscles that points the toes and pulls them in. Each one is worked on individually. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome can be very painful, and it can cause a lot of problems down into your arms. The best stretches and exercises for TOS are pec stretches, first rib mobilization, and nerve stretches and/or glides. The first stretch is a pec stretch. You can do this in sitting or standing. Clasp your hands behind you and try to squeeze your palms together. Push your hands downward, and push your chest out and up. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and do three of them. Next, you can take a tennis ball or lacrosse ball and place it in the spot between your neck and shoulder where the first rib is. Side bend and rotate your neck toward the side of pain and take a deep breath in and push down as you are breathing out. You can do this as many times as you want throughout the day. Now, take a roller and lay on it vertically so your head is resting on it. Place your hands in a stop sign position, and let them relax to stretch your pec muscles. If that is not enough of a stretch, you can raise them higher above your head or have someone push down lightly on your arms. Hold for 30 seconds, and do three of them. Then you will do shoulder or scapular squeezes. You can use your elbows to help squeeze your shoulder blades back behind you. Imagine that someone has their hand on the middle of your spine, and you are trying to squeeze their hand with your shoulder blades. Do about 10-15 of those. For the nerve glides and stretches, you want to be very careful to not overdo them and irritate the nerves. Just starting off with 10 of these for one day should be plenty. The first modified version is the glide. Put your hand up, out to your side with your elbow bent, and your palm facing your head. Imagine that there is a string attached to your hand and your head. Sidebend your head to that side as you straighten out your arm, and then come back up. If that is not much of a stretch, then you can do the full motion with a nerve stretch. Now place your arm straight out with your palm facing the ceiling. This time sidebend your head away from your arm, and at your wrist, bend down at the same time. You might want to start with just the wrist movement. Finally, you will stretch your scalene muscles, which attach to your first rib. Clasp your hands behind you again, but you can do this loosely. Rotate your head away from the injured side, and sidebend it away as well. You should feel the stretch in your front neck muscles. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and do this 3 times. Research clearly shows the value of baseball strength workouts in terms of performance and injury prevention. Treiber 1998 in the American Journal of Sports Medicine showed a 6-7% increase in serve velocity after a 4 week strengthening program. The following Study out of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning details the deconditioning process that occurs through the course of a football season. As the article describes; due to fatigue and load the players became progressively weaker throughout the season, increasing the potential for injury and performance impairment. Regardless of the sport, a well designed rotator cuff and scapular strengthening program is needed to prevent this type of in-season strength loss. Adequate shoulder girdle strength is important to ensure a football player's success and safety. Accurate and easy measurement of shoulder strength would help identify deconditioning trends and monitor the effects of injury or rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to document variations in shoulder abduction strength in football players during a 10-week seasons using a portable strain gauge device. Bilateral shoulder abduction strength of 59 players was measured at the season's start, midpoint and near end. Strength dropped approximately 28% on each side, with most of the loss being in the first 5 weeks. The strength loss was also ore rapid on the left side, making the side-to-side strength ration unstable throughout the season. It is recommended that in-season shoulder girdle strengthening be emphasized and that if shoulder strength measurements are to be used for exercise prescription or injury rehabilitation purposes, serial baseline measurements be made during the season.
