CppCon 2018: Bob Steagall “Fast Conversion From UTF-8 with C++, DFAs, and SSE Intrinsics”

01:09:40
http://CppCon.org — Presentation Slides, PDFs, Source Code and other presenter materials are available at: https://github.com/CppCon/CppCon2018 — UTF-8 is taking on an increasingly important role in text processing. Many applications require the conversion of UTF-8 to UTF-16 or UTF-32, but typical conversion algorithms are sub-optimal. This talk will describe a fast, correct, DFA-based approach to UTF-8 conversion that requires only three simple lookup tables and a small amount of straightforward C++ code. We'll begin with a quick review UTF-8 and its relation to UTF-16 and UTF-32, as well as the concept of code units and code points. Next, we'll look at the layout of bits within a UTF-8 byte sequence, and from that, show a simple algorithm for converting from UTF-8 to UTF-32. Along the way will be a definition of overlong and invalid byte sequences. Following that will be a discussion of how to construct a DFA to perform the same operations as the simple algorithm. We'll then look at code for the DFA traversal underlying the basic conversion algorithm, and how to gain an additional performance boost by using SSE intrinsics. Finally, we'll compare the performance of this approach to several commonly-available implementations on Windows and Linux, and show how it's possible to do significantly faster conversions. — Bob Steagall, KEWB Computing CppCon Poster Chair I've been working in C++ since discovering the second edition of The C++ Programming Language in a college bookstore in 1992. The majority of my career has been spent in medical imaging, where I led teams building applications for functional MRI and CT-based cardiac visualization. After a brief detour through the world of DNS and analytics, I'm now working in the area of distributed stream processing. I'm a relatively new member of the C++ Standardization Committee, and launched a blog earlier this year to write about C++ and related topics. I hold BS and MS degrees in Physics, and I'm an avid cyclist when weather permits. — Videos Filmed & Edited by Bash Films: http://www.BashFilms.com

Source Boston 2010: Linux Kernel Exploitation: Earning Its Pwnie a Vuln at a Time 3/5

10:01
Clip 3/5 Speaker: Jon Oberheide, University of Michigan As userspace applications and services become increasingly hardened against traditional memory corruption exploits, operating system kernels have become a source for abundant exploitation opportunities. In particular, the Linux kernel has recently suffered a bout of severe and high-profile vulnerabilities and drawn ire from the security community for it's mishandling of bugs with known security impact, resulting in a Pwnie award for "Lamest Vendor Response". Given the importance the Linux operating system plays in many enterprise environments, it is necessary to understand the strengths and weaknesses of its kernel's security. In this presentation, we'll explore these strengths and weaknesses by diving deep into the exploitation of vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel. Using real-world vulnerabilities and exploits, we'll detail the traditional classes of kernel vulnerabilities such as control flow hijacking (via stack smashing and SLAB/SLUB/SLOB allocator corruption), invalid userland memory accesses (including NULL pointer dereferences), and information leakage. In addition to traditional bug classes, we'll cover the semantic vulnerabilities inherent in complex operating systems that require deep knowledge of kernel internals to identify and exploit subtle conditions (e.g. desynchronization in the VM subsystem), some of which have previously thought to be unexploitable. We'll also explore the attack surface of the Linux kernel and enumerate the most common vulnerability entry points using historical data. Lastly, we'll release several tools assisting vulndev/auditing and discuss the effectiveness of deployed countermeasures and best current practices for securing the Linux kernel. How to debug Java programs using -Xlint:unchecked in Netbeans

01:09
How to debug Java programs using --Xlint:unchecked in Netbeans. Sometimes when you build your Java programs you may see messages warning you about "unchecked or unsafe" operations but it may not tell you what those operations are. You can get more information by rebuilding your program using the --Xlint:unchecked compiler option. This video shows you how to set that option and shows the extra information which you see as a result. If you want even more detailed warnings on compiling, you can use the --Xlint compiler option instead of -Xlint:unchecked. And you can use various other compiler options to configure the output when you build. For more on --Xlint:unchecked and other compiler options, be sure to read Oracle's documentation for the Java compiler here: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/technotes/tools/windows/javac.html There is also some useful information in the Java tutorial here: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/technotes/tools/windows/javac.html This is one of a series of 60 second programming tutorials from Bitwise Courses. Apache Struts Vulnerability - Cyber Security Minute

So, in this week’s episode, we are going to answer three questions in just a minute or two. First, what is Apache Struts? Second, what exactly is the vulnerability being exploited? And, third, how does the exploit work? So, why is Apache Struts? Well, we aren’t talking about a mechanical part on the Army’s helicopters, here, we are talking about an open-source web application framework used for developing Java EE web applications. Basically, it is used by web developers to adopt a model-view-controller architecture, allowing a Java Servlet to interact with the database on behalf of the webpage form. So, what is the vulnerability that has been identified? Well, in CVE-2017-5638, the vulnerability has been identified as permitting unauthenticated Remote Code Execution (RCE) through a specially crafted Content-Type value in an HTTP request. Basically, the attacker creates an invalid value for Content-Type which causes the vulnerable software to throw an exception, but when the software attempts to prepare the error message for display, a flaw in the Apache Struts Jakarta Multipart parser causes the malicious Content-Type value to be executed instead of being displayed. So, how does the exploit work? Well, when the Content-Type is executed, this allows the attacker to then run a payload, normally shell code, to cause the hacker’s desired effect. This particular exploit was first spotted on March 7th from a host in Zhengzhou, China. Essentially, the exploit appears to be a standard command injection or remote code execution attack against a web server. The next day, a different variation was seen, where an attacker from Shanghai, China modified the original attack to also attempt to stop a firewall on the service first, then attempt to download and execute some malicious remote code. So, how can you prevent this vulnerability and exploit from affecting you? Well, first you should determine if you are running the affected versions of Struts (2.3.5 - 2.3.31 and 2.5 - 2.5.10). If you are, please upgrade to Struts 2.3.32 or 2.5.10.1, which are patched against this vulnerability. Also, if you have compiled an application using the vulnerable version of Struts, you may wish to look at recompiling those programs after you have upgraded Struts to ensure the vulnerability hasn’t been transferred into yours compile software in a production environment. I hope you enjoyed this weeks Cyber Security Minute. If you have a question for the Cyber Security Minute, please post it in the comments below and I look forward to seeing you here next Monday on the Cyber Security Minute.

EMI Testing: Finding 1000+ Bugs in GCC and LLVM in 3 Years - Zhendong Su

42:04
Workshop on Software Correctness and Reliability 2016 We describe equivalence modulo inputs (EMI), a general methodology for validating optimizing compilers. The key insight is toexploit the close interplay between (1) dynamically executing a exploit the close interplay between (1) dynamically executing a program on some test input and (2) statically compiling the program to work on all possible input. Indeed, the test input induces a natural collection of the original program's EMI variants, which help test any compiler and specifically target the difficult-to-find miscompilations. We have developed a series of gradually sophisticated techniques to generate EMI variants by (1) profiling a program's test executions, and (2) stochastically deleting/inserting/mutating code. Our extensive testing to date has led to 1000+ confirmed bug reports for GCC and LLVM alone, of which 600+ have already been fixed. The EMI concept is widely applicable --- beyond testing compilers, it can be adapted to validate program transformations and analyses, and software in general.
