What happened to the Salton Sea in California? In my first travel documentary about this strange yet fascinating place in California's Imperial Valley, I explore the sea and surrounding communities of Bombay Beach, Slab City, East Jesus, and Salton City. The area was also the inspiration for the fictional desert town of Sandy Shores which appears in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. In the game, Trevor Philips acquires a small landing strip in the area which may be in reference to the Salton City airport. I encourage you to read more about the lake’s history and the current ecological crisis it has become. You can find an interesting article written by Ian James and Sammy Roth on USA Today here: https://www.usatoday.com/pages/interactives/salton-sea/the-dying-salton-sea. Thanks for watching! I hope to post more of these as I travel! ***CORRECTION*** The Salton Bay Yacht Club was demolished in 2000, not the 80's. Amidst the nationwide focus on the drought in California, a major environmental and public health concern has once again been set in the shadow for the law makers of Sacramento. But for the Salton Sea - California’s largest lake and home to more than 425 bird species on the pacific flyway, time is running out. Time is ticking until 2017, when water allocations in accordance with the Quantification Settlement Agreement (2003) are significantly reduced and directly affect the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea is already more than 25% saltier than the Pacific Ocean, and with reduced water and rising salinity this region will no longer be able to support environmental life. To make matters worse, as the water level reduces and exposes years of agricultural runoff, giant dust storms have the potential to plague areas as far as Los Angeles, San Diego, and Northern Mexico. This surrounding region already has some of the worst rates of asthma in the state, and the socioeconomic suppressed immigrant working communities are suffering and have nowhere to move. This issue is not just about international bird populations and the environment, its about social justice, and rights to clean air. California is running out of time after decades of political indecisiveness and costly studies, something has to be done now to “Save Our Sea”. A short film project by Alex Cooke & Chris Norwood from Pitzer College Spring 2015.

Beyond Borders: A Worthy Investment? - Salton Sea, California Become a Beyond Borders Member https://www.patreon.com/beyond_borders LIKE / SHARE / COMMENT In this episode, host Erik Niel travels to the Salton Sea in Southern California to highlight the environmental catastrophe that looms over this accidental lake, and the surrounding area. Years of agricultural runoff have turned this mid-century resort into a decaying waste. As the sea evaporates, it threatens to release the toxic sediments from the runoff into the agricultural Imperial Valley via the Santa Ana winds. If this occurs, California may face perhaps the greatest manmade catastrophe in its history.

The southern end of Salton Sea in California is one of the most active geothermal spots in the United States. In this video I quickly show the location of two of the most famous mud pots, and where the virtually unknown "new" mud pots are located. The "New" Salton Sea mud pots might be the largest and most active in California.

Salton Sea in 24 hours: Exploring the Area's Best Hikes, Food & Strange Attractions Salton Sea is a strange and unique place in Southern California that was once a resort area for celebrities but has now become somewhat of a wasteland. Many people don't take the time to explore it because of that, but I always recommend giving it a chance as there are a lot of fun things to see and do. Don't go in the summer though as it can be incredibly hot. Here are my recommendations for 24 hours spent at the Salton Sea. A mud volcano is an Earth surface formation created by geo-excreted solids, liquids, and gases. The temperature of the excreted material is much cooler than that of a lava volcano. The excreted material is typically a slurry of fine solids suspended in liquids, including acidic or saline water and hydrocarbon fluids. The gases released are usually methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen.

Salton City is a census-designated place (CDP) in Imperial County, California. The population was 3,763 at the 2010 census, up from 978 in 2000. It is the largest Imperial County development on the Salton coast. It is part of the El Centro, California Metropolitan Statistical Area. Although maps at first view show Salton City to be a sizable community, very few of the surveyed streets and roads were ever developed. The town was developed in the 1950s and established in 1958 primarily by M. Penn Phillips and the Holly Sugar Corporation as a resort community on the Salton Sea, a saline, endorheic rift lake located directly on the San Andreas Fault, yet very little development was achieved due to its isolation and lack of local employment opportunities. In the 1970s, most of the buildings constructed along the shoreline, including the city's marina were abandoned due to rising sea elevation. In the 1980s, the Imperial Irrigation District took proactive water conservation measures to reduce the flow of unused canal water into the Salton Sea. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, as salinity and suspected pollution levels in the Salton Sea increased, the attraction of the Salton Sea as a recreational destination diminished. Most of the original tourist related structures fell during this time, including the Truckhaven Cafe, the Salton Bay Yacht Club hotel and restaurant, and the Holly House motel and restaurant (later renamed Desser House and then the Sundowner). In the 2000s, development in Salton City began to rise as a result of the escalating California housing market. Cheap land and housing costs, improvements to Highway 86, and a casino opened by Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians attracted new residents

Thoughts on my Salton Sea road trip: Salton Sea is one of the strangest places I've been to. Huge, smelly, and now completely desolate, Salton Sea used to be one of the top weekend vacation spots for Californians. Blog: http://www.roadtriprandy.com Although empty and barren, you can still see pieces of what used to be a very popular tourist destination. Abandoned stores, towns, and cars can be found scattered all around the lake. Road trip planner: If you plan on taking a Salton Sea road trip, here are some interesting places nearby... Bombay Beach- Free to enter, nice view, interesting town in front. Salvation Mountain- Incredible man-made "mountain" painted in bible verses and words praising God. Slab City- Hippies in the desert building cool stuff. Niland- The definition of a small town. Have you been there? What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments. On our trip to Salton Sea & Julian, we'll show you tons of great things to do in Southern California. We start our day in Salton Sea, the largest lake in California that was a paradise for the rich and famous back in the mid 1900's. Today, Salton Sea is an abandoned ghost town, owing to pollution by runoff water from nearby farms that flow into the lake. Next, we travel to Julian, a small town known for their apple pie, great wine, and apple picking. We'll show you some great things to do, including where to walk, what to eat, plus we visit a longtime Julian tradition - The Grape Stomp Festa! The Salton Sea enjoyed some success as a resort area in the 1950s, but was abandoned after a large amount of agricultural runoff and increases in salinity caused a large algal bloom in the water, depriving the lake of its dissolved oxygen and killing millions of fish. The fish rotted and caused a horrible stench, driving away all the tourists and causing local property owners to abandon their vehicles and structures, which have decayed at an extremely accelerated pace due to the hot dry winds from the surrounding desert that act as a sandblaster; salty mists from the Salton Sea itself cake salt onto everything on the shores over time, causing further corrosion by sucking atmospheric moisture onto the surfaces they are attached to. There are mudpots and mud volcanoes on the eastern side of the Salton Sea, evidence of geothermal activity underneath. As for the stench of the Salton Sea at this time of year when I visited in June 2013, that was caused by one of many regular algal blooms that result when the strong desert winds bring dirt and sand containing nutrients to the surface of the Salton Sea. Other microbes digest the algae after they run out of nutrients and die, releasing sulfurous gases that create most of the horrible stench. The fish suffocate and die after the algae use up most of the oxygen in the Salton Sea, further contributing to the stench. While algal blooms and their subsequent stink cycles happen rather frequently at the Salton Sea during late summer and early spring, more often than not the Sea has a normal biological smell. The oceans have the odor of decaying vegetation too, as do other lakes sometimes, albeit not anywhere near the degree this polluted salt lake abomination does.

Recommended lures affiliate link: http://amzn.to/2yih9uH Just finished a long trip to the Salton Sea. Fascinating history with this fertile and smelly lake. Interestingly, the visitor center claims the lake is "cleaner than Lake Tahoe" at the time of my visit. The heavy fertilizer runoff from the surrounding farms and fairly stagnant water really make the place poorly appealing. However, it is loaded with tilapia! I didn't catch any large ones but I saw several 2-3lb fish landed by others. Thanks to the work of the East Valley Historical Society, the North Shore Yacht Club has been renovated to its original appearance. The revamped club serves as a senior center and community center. The North Shore Yacht Club is an historically significant--not to mention architecturally significant--part of California's legacy. The North Shore Yacht club was the whimsical design of noted architect Albert Frey, who just happened to be a resident of the Coachella Valley. Completed in 1958 by developers Ray Ryan and Trav Rogers, North Shore Beach Yacht Club was one of the largest marinas in Southern California and carried a price tag of $2 million. Celebrities like The Beach Boys, Jerry Lewis, and the Marx Brothers partied there and / or docked boats at the marina. - The Salton Sea Chronicles A promotional video for the Yacht Club in its heyday - check out how nice this place once was: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTNuRxQaEEQ This location is featured in the music video Swing Out Sister - Fooled By A Smile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlFIj0DZh6A My Flickr photos of the North Shore Yacht Club: http://www.flickr.com/photos/slworking/sets/72157621960805804/ Visit my Salton Sea page on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/search/?q=salton+sea&init=quick#!/group.php?gid=64337476896

We met up with a fellow youtuber #AdventuresInAZ at the Salton Sea to explore some of the abandoned places around the sea. Chris had to leave early but we pushed on.. =) Hope you enjoy, there been a lot of videos posted lately on the Salton Sea. The largest lake in California doesn't have a single boat riding across. The town was developed in the 1960s and established in 1958 primarily by M. Penn Phillips and the Holly Corporation, the Texas-based oil refiner and land developer. It was intended to be a resort community on the Salton Sea, a saline, endorheic rift lake located directly on the San Andreas Fault, yet very little development was achieved due to its isolation and lack of local employment opportunities #LiLV - Living in Las Vegas youtube channel
