Webinar: Community MPs Update
Join Matthew Long and Nathan Foreman as they take a look at what's been going on with the Community MP Catalog since it's launch last month. The Community MP Catalog is a SCOM management pack that gives you visibility into all the awesome (often free!) management packs available outside of the official Microsoft & partner catalog, right from the SCOM console. Matthew and Nathan discuss new packs that have been added to the catalog since it's launch, along with updates to the Catalog MP itself, before taking a closer look at a couple of gems in the catalog you may have missed. If you either have or know of a great SCOM management pack you'd like to share with the community, get involved on github (see links below) and share it with the world! Webinar: Contributing to the Community MP Catalog
Join Matthew Long and Nathan Foreman as we take a look at contributing to the newly released Community MP Catalog. SCOM is an amazingly powerful platform, but it’s the management packs that do all the heavy lifting. The new Community MP Catalog helps you immediately discover and manage all of the best MPs available in the SCOM community, providing instant visibility of dozens and dozens of awesome (and often free) MPs right within the SCOM console. The catalog is backed by a community managed Github repository which details all of the MPs in the catalog, so anyone can help contribute to its contents. Nathan walks us through making a simple edit to the catalog right within Github (great for simply updating a version number on an existing MP), and then Matthew walks us through adding a brand new MP to the catalog using git and Visual Studio Code. If you have an awesome MP that you'd like to share with the community, host it online somewhere (on your blog, Technet Gallery, Github etc) and then raise a PR/issue to have it included in the catalog. Extending System Center Operations Manager for Monitoring Heterogeneous IT Infrastructures
The combined eG Enterprise + SCOM solution provides integrated end-to-end performance monitoring, diagnosis and reporting for all IT infrastructures, irrespective of whether they are deployed on physical, virtual or cloud servers. With this solution, administrators do not have to deploy many management packs from different vendors. They can use System Center Operation Manager to monitor Microsoft services in the infrastructure and use the eG Enterprise management packs for all the non-Microsoft elements of the infrastructure including Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop, SAP, Java applications, messaging servers, Unix servers, etc. Instead of sending raw metrics to System Center Operation Manager, eG Enterprise collects, analyzes, and correlates metrics from every layer, every infrastructure tier using an industry first "virtualization-aware" root-cause diagnosis technology. Only actionable information is sent to the Operation Manager's console. Now administrators do not have to put in any manual effort to analyze the alerts; they can initiate the right corrective action immediately to fix the problem.

Webinar: Community Resource - Security Monitoring MP
Join Matthew Long and Adam Kinniburgh as they talk to Microsoft Premier field engineer Nathan Gau about his free Security Monitoring MP. Nathan has spent over a year building a SCOM management pack that generates alerts for all sorts of security related events, ranging from items that are likely rare operational events (such as modifying group policy or changing admin group membership) but could be a sign of intrusion, to definite signs of attack (Kerberos ticket exploits, known tool execution), all whilst minimising as much noise as possible. We discuss the design philosophy of the management pack with Nathan, along with how it fits into "defence in depth" strategy if you are already using other event collection tools. We also discuss alert management process, as you need to document your discovery, tuning and action process before signs of an intrusion start to appear! Finally Nathan gives us his top 3 security features to enable if you have limited time or political backing in your organisation. We also have a brief look at our new Community MP catalog, which makes it easy to find awesome free management packs like this and be notified of updated versions, right from the SCOM console. Webinar: Tuning the SCOM Data Warehouse
Join Matthew Long and Richard Benwell as they discuss how to get the most out of your SCOM Data Warehouse performance. The SCOM Data Warehouse is used by both SCOM and Squared Up to display Performance, Event and health data, both in an aggregated and raw form for near and long term storage. As such, any performance issues in the DW will result in a poor user experience as dashboards take an unreasonable amount of time to load, leading to poor user engagement in SCOM. Richard talks us through his 5 point tuning plan, which aims to address both sizing and configuration issues, as well as tackling that classic issue of MP tuning, as too much of the wrong data going in can prevent getting any data out! There are a lot of great resources linked to in this video from the SCOM community and Microsoft PFE's, which we've collated for you below, so make sure you check them out and see if you can't supercharge arguably SCOM's greatest asset. Calendars and SLO's with System Center Service Manager 2012 R2
Some monitored applications don't need to run on holidays or after working hours. Just shutting them down could cause all sorts of notifications and can impact your Service Level Objective if Service Manager doesn't know what days these applications don't need to run, wasting time and resources. In this video, Senior Technical Instructor Doug Bassett explains how to configure Service Manager Calendars that can be associated with Service Level Objectives (SLO's). This association lets Service Manager know that the application hasn't failed, but is in a scheduled shutdown period. You can have multiple calendars and associate the SLO's to customize, secure, and control your data center application infrastructure. This is an example of the real-world, online HD certification training done at StormWind.com. If you have any questions, feel free to email our Senior Technical Instructor Doug Bassett at [email protected] We look forward to seeing you in class soon. StormWind.com
