Anti-Architecture & Deconstructivism

05:34
Deconstructivism is a Postmodern architectural style characterised by the idea of fragmentation and the manipulation of a structure’s surface. Buildings adopting the style are often formed of components that have been disassembled and reassembled in a new and unorthodox way, giving the impression of a chaotic design devoid of precise logic.

Architecture in the Early 20th Century, Modernism, Bauhaus, DeStijl and International Style

27:32
The Bauhaus, founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius, is the most significant German movement that tried to combine all areas of the arts in ideal unity. The artist should be freed with new pedagogical methods to academic specialization order to go back to his craftsmanship. 1923, this philosophy was further developed by the reality of technical civilization. Far away was the symbiosis of industrial production and aesthetic-functional design as a credo of the movement. The short creation and design of the Bauhaus protagonists who were expelled in 1933 by the terrible political circumstances in Germany, yet it has left an effect that is also relevant for the present time. This can be also and just say for the designed by Bauhaus furniture that reflect the demands of aesthetics and functionality in an ideal way.
How to Write Like An Architect (+ Worksheet)

10:35
Tips + techniques for learning how to write like an architect with a worksheet to guide you. Sharing my favorite tools and reference materials you can use to learn the graphic conventions architects use to annotate their sketches. An updated guide to help you develop your own personal architectural lettering style. Even though digital production has made the architectural handwriting tradition less essential, I would argue learning a handwriting style is still a relevant exercise. As visual people, it forms a significant part of our personal graphic style. So, whether you're an architect, a student, a graphic designer, or simply journaling each day, developing a legible, clear, and consistent handwriting style remains important. Timestamps: 0:30 Tools you’ll need (just trace + a felt-tipped pen) http://thirtybyforty.com/trace + http://thirtybyforty.com/ultra-fine-point-sharpie 1.01 Worksheet (download here: http://thirtybyforty.com/write-like-an-architect-worksheet ) 2:09 Style guide + letter-by-letter tutorial 7:23 Numbers 9:00 Essential Reference Book http://thirtybyforty.com/architectural-graphics 9:41 Why - I think - you should bother learning this to write like this The Origin Story I didn't mention this in the video, but it's interesting to know how this style of writing came to be and why all architects share a similar style of handwriting. Before the computer, there were teams of people responsible for drafting a set of architectural drawings so a floor plan may have been started by one and then passed off to be revised and finished by many others. This meant that all the hand lettered notes and dimensions had to be consistent between each person. Everything had to be clear because a misinterpreted note on a drawing could make for a costly construction error. Because upper case letters are visually distinct they were difficult to confuse with other letters like you might with a lowercase “L” and a lowercase “I” for example. There were also compositional reasons for choosing uppercase letterforms too. When laying out and composing a sheet of drawings there’s an art to arranging the graphics on the page and the notations they’re a large part of the visual style. Upper case letters don’t have descenders - no part of the letter goes below the baseline and this makes them a lot easier to lay out as graphic elements on the drawing and you can pack things in a lot closer than you could if there were descenders as you would if you used lowercase letters. // GEAR I USE // CAD DRAWING TEMPLATE: * Download here: http://thirtybyforty.com/autocad-template ARCHITECT'S TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL ARCHITECTURE ESSENTIAL TOOLS: * http://thirtybyforty.com/archi-gear PHOTOGRAPHY GEAR: *http://thirtybyforty.com/my-photo-gear MUSIC I USE: * http://thirtybyforty.com/music #writelikeanarchitect #architectureletteringtechniques #handwriting -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Making a Site Model - The Outpost Project" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsJrDScS5ZI -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

America is blessed with a breadth of architectural styles, from early Colonia-era regional styles to modern, sustainable styles that draw influence from myriad sources. Featuring more than three dozen architectural styles through 130+ images, this short video also showcases a number of unique buildings types. The content is drawn from Scott D. Butcher's book, "Historic Architecture of Pennsylvania," which looks at American architecture through the eyes of six south central Pennsylvania communities with almost 300 years of buildings and structures.

The Craftsman- House Style Series by Joel Perry of Indwell Architecture and Design

03:47
Does your house have style? Of course it does! But which one? I’ve asked Joel Perry with Indwell Architecture to talk about some of the common house styles around here. This week we are focusing on one of the most popular house styles in the Prairie Village area: the Craftsman. Where did it come from? Most house styles evolve from a certain place because of things like weather and available building materials. The Craftsman style is different because it originated through a social movement. In the early 20th century, the Industrial Revolution was in full swing. Thomas Edison was a rock star, and Henry Ford would soon be one. People were moving from the country to the city. Technology was becoming more pervasive in people’s lives. And some people didn’t like that. They didn’t like mass production. They wanted to preserve the work of the individual craftsman and artisan. So, a house style evolved that used lots of natural products, and felt very connected to the earth. It was a style that would make it clear that skilled hands had worked to make it. Interesting Facts/Features: Low sloped gabled roofs with wide eave overhangs make the house feel substantial Lots of stone and wood Usually only 1 or 1 ½ stories Lots of exposed rafters and beams Generous porches with plenty of room for swings Lots of built in woodwork (benches, paneling, etc.) One of the first open floor plan styles Fireplaces, and if you are lucky, an inglenook Less paint, more stain If it were a person: It would be a bearded (I guess most men are anymore, so I don’t think that is very descriptive), opinionated woodcarver/hippie who hikes a lot and has thought deeply about most everything. He has a hint of a surfer accent. You know the type? He doesn’t have a cell phone or a tv. He loves having long discussions about topics, and quickly recognizes beauty when he sees it. When you stay at his house, he fixes you dinner using home grown herbs, with home brewed tangerine and maple syrup beer and in the morning you get coffee that he brews by hand (I don’t actually know what that means). Words: Gable: part of an exterior wall that encloses the end of a roof Inglenook: a recessed area around a fireplace. Feels like a reading nook or a restaurant booth. Very sexy. Eave: The part of the roof that overhangs the side wall Arts and Crafts: A connected movement, often used as another name for Craftsman. Greene Brothers: The architect brothers from Pasadena that are usually credited with starting the movement. CLEAN LINES, OPEN SPACES A VIEW OF MID CENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE Full Version

56:18
CLEAN LINES, OPEN SPACES: A VIEW OF MID-CENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE international-style architecture; A Utopian Ideal Modern architecture or modernist architecture is a term applied to an overarching movement, with its exact definition and scope varying widely.[1] The term is often applied to modernist movements at the turn of the 20th century, with efforts to reconcile the principles underlying architectural design with rapid technological advancement and the modernization of society. It would take the form of numerous movements, schools of design, and architectural styles, some in tension with one another, and often equally defying such classification.[1] The term Modern architecture may be used to differentiate from Classical architecture following Vitruvian ideals, while it is also applied to various contemporary architecture styles such as Postmodern, High-tech or even New Classical, depending on the context. In art history, the revolutionary and neoclassical styles that evolved around 1800 are also called modern. The concept of modernism is a central theme in the efforts of 20th century modern architecture. Gaining global popularity especially after the Second World War, architectural modernism was adopted by many architects and architectural educators, and continued as a dominant architectural style for institutional and corporate buildings into the 21st century. Modernism eventually generated reactions, most notably Postmodernism which sought to preserve pre-modern elements, while "Neo-modernism" has emerged as a reaction to Post-modernism. Notable architects important to the history and development of the modernist movement include Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Erich Mendelsohn, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, Gerrit Rietveld, Bruno Taut, Arne Jacobsen, Oscar Niemeyer and Alvar Aalto. Common themes of modern architecture include: the notion that "Form follows function", a dictum originally expressed by Frank Lloyd Wright's early mentor Louis Sullivan, meaning that the result of design should derive directly from its purpose simplicity and clarity of forms and elimination of "unnecessary detail" materials at 90 degrees to each other visual expression of structure (as opposed to the hiding of structural elements) the related concept of "Truth to materials", meaning that the true nature or natural appearance of a material ought to be seen rather than concealed or altered to represent something else use of industrially-produced materials; adoption of the machine aesthetic particularly in International Style modernism, a visual emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines

Ask a designer - Mario Botta on architectural style | Architecture design

04:15
The architecture of Swiss architect Mario Botta is scattered around the world. His signature works include San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art, the cathedral in Evry, France and the Samsung museum of art in Seoul. Red bricks are his trademark. At the age of 73, he'd added another structure to his repertoire. The Fiore di Pietra restaurant in Switzerland. It's perched some 1700 meters on Monte Generoso, like a flower overlooking the valley below. DW Euromaxx is bringing engaging insights into European culture and lifestyles to a global audience. TOP 10 Masterpiece of Victorian Architecture

13:23
The term Victorian architecture describes several - predominantly revival - architectural styles that were popular from the mid- to the end of the 19th century; this period largely corresponds to the so-called Victorian era or the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) after whom it was named. Though the leading Victorian architects were more or less guided by architectural styles of past periods, some of the world's most iconic buildings have been constructed during the Victorian era. If you would like to know more here is the reference book used: Concepts of Space in Traditional Indian Architecture ------------------------------ Amazon: https://amzn.to/2GVIoyM Flipkart : http://fkrt.it/t93QT2NNNN General Awareness: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxJNbXGrHdcX2gmfJ8DZg-VdS52RA0MEC Vocabulary Booster: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxJNbXGrHdcWe4PMHJLQ7RZP8SRBrJOr4 IN this session, we are going to learn about the Indian architecture UPSC lesson. Indian architecture for IAS lesson is all about just introducing the basic concepts in Indian Architecture. You still have to study the Indian architecture books to get full detailed information. Our aim is to get you started on the Indian architectures such as Colonial Architecture, Indo Islamic Architecture, Ancient Architecture, Cave Architecture, Rock Cut, Temple Architecture. These are the types of Indian architecture. Ancient architecture of India is rich in culture and tradition. Lets see some facts on it. Colonial Architecture Like all other aspects of society, the colonization of India also had a great impact on architecture. Colonization marked a new chapter in Indian architecture. Though the Dutch, the Portuguese and the French made their presence felt through their buildings but it was the English who had a lasting impact on architecture of India. In the beginning of the colonial rule there were attempts at creating authority through classical prototypes. In its later phase the colonial architecture culminated into what is called the Indo-Saracenic architecture. The Indo-Saracenic architecture combined the features of Hindu, Islamic and western elements. Examples: Santhome Church,Chennai All Saints Cathedral, Allahabad St. George's Cathedral, Chennai Gole Market, New Delhi Medak Cathedral, Telangana Indo Islamic Architecture The medieval period saw great developments in the field of architecture. With the coming of Muslims to India, many new features came to be introduced in buildings. The development of Muslim Style of Architecture of this period can be called the Indo-Islamic Architecture or the Indian Architecture influenced by Islamic Art. Examples: Qutub Minar, New Delhi Alai Darwaza, New Delhi Agra Fort, Agra Taj Mahal, Agra Red Fort, New Delhi Ancient Architecture Indian architecture is as old as the history of the civilization. The earliest remains of recognizable building activity in the India dates back to the Indus Valley cities. Among India's ancient architectural remains, the most characteristic are the temples, Chaityas, Viharas, Stupas and other religious structures. Examples: Akshardham Temple, Delhi Virupaksha Temple, Karnataka Karla Caves, Maharashtra Ellora Caves, Maharashtra Cave Architecture The cave architecture in India is believed to have begun during the ancient time. These caves were used by Buddhist and Jain monks as places of worship and residence . Examples: Mahabalipuram, Tamilnadu Ajanta Caves, Maharashtra Bhaja Caves, Maharashtra Bedse Caves, Maharashtra Sittanavasal, Tamilnadu Rock Cut The Rock-cut structures present the most spectacular piece of ancient Indian art specimen. Most of the rock-cut structures were closely associated with various religions and religious activities. In the beginning, remarkable Buddhist and Jain rock-cut structures were built in areas such as Bihar in the east and Maharashtra in the west. Numerous caves were excavated by the Buddhist monks for prayer and residence purposes. The best example of this is Chaityas (prayer halls) and viharas (monasteries). Examples: Kailasa temple, Ellora Pancha Rathas, Mahabalipuram Barabar Caves, Bihar Badami Cave Temples, Karnataka Ajanta Cave, Maharashtra Temple Architecture In ancient India, temple architecture of high standard developed in almost all regions. The distinct architectural style of temple construction in different parts was a result of geographical, climatic, ethnic, racial, historical and linguistic diversities. Ancient Indian temples are classified in three broad types. This classification is based on different architectural styles, employed in the construction of the temples. Three main style of temple architecture are the Nagara or the Northern style, the Dravida or the Southern style and the Vesara or Mixed style. But at the same time there are also some regional styles of Bengal, Kerala and the Himalayan areas. Examples: Brihadeeswarar Temple, Thanjavur Jagadamba Temple, Madhya Pradesh Sun Temple, Modhera Konark Sun Temple, Orissa Chennakeshava Temple, Karnataka Subscribe to our channel for continuous updates ------------------------------------------------- Visit our website for Free regular updates: https://www.exambin.com Follow us on: Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/exam.ibps Twitter. https://www.twitter.com/exambin Google+ : https://plus.google.com/+ExamBin -------------------------------------------------

A Style-Based Generator Architecture for Generative Adversarial Networks

06:18
Paper (PDF): http://stylegan.xyz/paper Authors: Tero Karras (NVIDIA) Samuli Laine (NVIDIA) Timo Aila (NVIDIA) Abstract: We propose an alternative generator architecture for generative adversarial networks, borrowing from style transfer literature. The new architecture leads to an automatically learned, unsupervised separation of high-level attributes (e.g., pose and identity when trained on human faces) and stochastic variation in the generated images (e.g., freckles, hair), and it enables intuitive, scale-specific control of the synthesis. The new generator improves the state-of-the-art in terms of traditional distribution quality metrics, leads to demonstrably better interpolation properties, and also better disentangles the latent factors of variation. To quantify interpolation quality and disentanglement, we propose two new, automated methods that are applicable to any generator architecture. Finally, we introduce a new, highly varied and high-quality dataset of human faces.

Bauhaus, History of Modern Architecture, International Style, Part 1

14:11
In 1919, Architect Walter Gropius was appointed to head a new institution in Germany that would help rebuild the country . Called the Bauhaus (a German expression meaning house for building), the Institution called for a new "rational" social housing for the workers. Bauhaus architects rejected details such as cornices, eaves, and decorative details. They used principles of Classical architecture in their purist form, functional and without ornamentation of any kind. Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, are some of the Bauhaus leaders who migrated to the United States. The term "International Style" was applied to the American form of Bauhaus architecture. FOLK VICTORIAN | American Architecture Styles

10:46
Today we are kicking off a new adventure into learning about American Architecture Styles. There is such a huge range of styles in American architecture but we’re starting with one near and dear to my heart: the Folk Victorian House. Victorian homes and Victorian houses were obviously known for being a little over the top - that’s the typical Victorian aesthetic. The Folk Victorian house is the same...but a little different. At the core, it is a simple folk house or a national house. But with a bit of extra Victorian trim. This is the style of our Victorian farmhouse and is a wonderful example of classic, rural architecture. Hope you guys enjoy and thanks for watching! Frida Escobedo interview: Mexican architecture "more a spirit than a style" | Architecture | Dezeen

In the second of a series of short movies about Frida Escobedo, the Mexican architect describes the architecture scene in her home country. Speaking exclusively to Dezeen in London, Escobedo said that contemporary Mexican architecture is united more by the way in which it responds to challenges than a common aesthetic. She names studios such as Tatiana Bilbao, Michel Rojkind, Derek Dellekamp, Francisco Padro, Isaac Broid, Miquel Adrià, Productora, Lanza Atelier and Escobedo Soliz as some of torch-bearers for Mexican architecture. Usually the proper method involves a T-Square and rulers, but we wanted to approach the tutorial from the point of view of someone travelling with nothing but pen and paper, sketching on the go. But some of the same principles that govern archi-lettering using draughting tools is still applied. Beautiful Gothic Architecture

03:41
PLEASE see my UK Places to visit Playlist here https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL42389B6659B65580 for mor great historic England,Wales and Scotland Beautiful Gothic Architecture Video by Robert Nichol music by John Mayfield. Gothic architecture is a style of architecture that flourished during the high and late medieval period. It evolved from Romanesque architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture. Originating in 12th-century France and lasting into the 16th century, Gothic architecture was known during the period as "French work" (Opus Francigenum), with the term Gothic first appearing during the latter part of the Renaissance. Its characteristic features include the pointed arch, the ribbed vault and the flying buttress. Gothic architecture is most familiar as the architecture of many of the great cathedrals, abbeys and churches of Europe. It is also the architecture of many castles, palaces, town halls, guild halls, universities and to a less prominent extent, private dwellings. It is in the great churches and cathedrals and in a number of civic buildings that the Gothic style was expressed most powerfully, its characteristics lending themselves to appeal to the emotions. A great number of ecclesiastical buildings remain from this period, of which even the smallest are often structures of architectural distinction while many of the larger churches are considered priceless works of art and are listed with UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. For this reason a study of Gothic architecture is largely a study of cathedrals and churches. A series of Gothic revivals began in mid-18th-century England, spread through 19th-century Europe and continued, largely for ecclesiastical and university structures, into the 20th century. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_architecture Gothic Architecture,Gothic,Architecture,Gothic Art,medieval period,Renaissance architecture,Middle Ages (Event)

People's Palaces - The Golden Age of Civic Architecture: Neo Classical [BBC, Full Documentary]

59:08
Architectural historian Dr Jonathan Foyle explores some of the best Georgian and Victorian neo-classical civic buildings in the north of England. He visits town halls, concert halls, libraries, schools and galleries in Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford, Manchester and Todmorden in an unlikely story of rivalry, ambition and power in the service of social responsibility. Neo-classicism harked back to Rome, democratic Athens and the Greek city-state. The regular proportion, geometry and symmetry of classical temple-style architecture suggested order in chaotically-expanding urban environments and served to associate towns regarded as squalid and unruly with the cultured ancient civilisations of antiquity. These were buildings constructed with the aim of elevating the towns in which they stood.
