First Hotel to be completely ran by a computer named Jason, 1978

02:57
I came across this video labeled 1978. Fred Ihrer was the first to have a hotel ran completely by a computer named Jason. The information below was acquired from www.1and1pos.com/a-memorial-for-fred-ihrer-updated/ which is a lovely tribute to my grandfather Fred Ihrer. "Fred Ihrer started a company called National Guest Systems, a Hotel Software Company that developed, ran and managed the accounting systems for Hotels. Fred developed the first hand held terminal in the 1980's using a Radio Shack Tandy Computer which would be available to take orders at a dining table. This was featured in the Washington Post. Barbara Bibbiani, Freds assistant at the Sheraton Potomac remembers the following. Fred perfected a hand-held device for the dining room order entry that he named JASON. It was the precursor to order entry by computer as we know it today. I believe his Sheraton was one of the first hotels anywhere to have 'keyless' room entry using a digitized key card instead. This was featured in the Washington Post. This was long before Microsoft Windows and Bill Gates. POS Systems were non-existent at that time, nor invented, it was Cash Register Systems. Fred's background of systems was extensive. Restaurants and Bars fascinated Fred. Fred gave me the opportunity to grow with Comus Restaurant Systems and Comus Restaurant Software starting in the 1990's. Let it be known, that Fred Ihrer invented what is today's Technology of what we all use daily in restaurants and retail, Point of Sale. Fred invented P.O.S., as the terminology definition is known today, no matter what brand P.O.S. system you have, are being marketed today through out the world today. Fred also purchased a restaurant in Washington D.C. He was determined to learn those business's, and he did."

IBM XT 286 - Getting My First Computer Back (Kind of)

10:56
After a rather long search, I finally was able to get an IBM XT 286 5162. My first computer was the same model, and I'm excited to have one again. This one has an EGA card and 5154 monitor, where my original had a Hercules monochrome card and off-brand amber monitor. You'll be seeing more of this machine in videos to come!

The Personal Computer Revolution: Crash Course Computer Science #25

10:15
Today we're going to talk about the birth of personal computing. Up until the early 1970s components were just too expensive, or underpowered, for making a useful computer for an individual, but this would begin to change with the introduction of the Altair 8800 in 1975. In the years that follow, we'll see the founding of Microsoft and Apple and the creation of the 1977 Trinity: The Apple II, Tandy TRS-80, and Commodore PET 2001. These new consumer oriented computers would become a huge hit, but arguably the biggest success of the era came with the release of the IBM PC in 1981. IBM completely changed the industry as its "IBM compatible" open architecture consolidated most of the industry except for, notably, Apple. Apple chose a closed architecture forming the basis of the Mac Vs PC debate that rages today. But in 1984, when Apple was losing marketshare fast it looked for a way to offer a new user experience like none other - which we'll discuss next week. My first computer: the 1976 SC/MP 8-Bit Microprocessor Kit

16:41
Although the SC/MP is very special to me, it must have been one of the most under-powered 8-bit microprocessors unleashed at the time (1976). But I didn't know any better, and in my 14-year old eyes, it was nothing short of amazing. This was my first computer hands-on experience. I discovered microprocessor fundamentals and assembly programming with it, all in the glory of raw hexadecimal machine coding. I found my beloved kit again during a visit at my parents, along with my notes, and brought it back to its native Silicon Valley birthplace (the National Semi plant, now Texas Instruments, is down the road from me on my way to work). Time to revive it after nearly 40 years, and relive my first steps in computing, and lessons I have never forgotten. The First Programming Languages: Crash Course Computer Science #11

11:52
Get your first two months of CuriosityStream free by going to http://curiositystream.com/crashcourse and using the promo code “crashcourse”. So we ended last episode with programming at the hardware level with things like plugboards and huge panels of switches, but what was really needed was a more versatile way to program computers - software! For much of this series we’ve been talking about machine code, or the 1’s and 0’s our computers read to perform operations, but giving our computers instructions in 1’s and 0’s is incredibly inefficient, and a “higher-level” language was needed. This led to the development of assembly code and assemblers that allow us to use operands and mnemonics to more easily write programs, but assembly language is still tied to underlying hardware. So by 1952 Navy officer Grace Hopper had helped created the first high-level programming language A-0 and compiler to translate that code to our machines. This would eventually lead to IBM’s Fortran and then a golden age of computing languages over the coming decades. Most importantly, these new languages utilized new abstractions to make programming easier and more powerful giving more and more people the ability to create new and amazing things. Reviving my First Computer: The Gateway MT6458 Laptop

08:26
Today I pulled my Gateway MT6458 laptop out of the depths of my closet to see if it still works and is still usable today in 2018. My family purchased this laptop in 2007 to replace a Toshiba Satellite 1605CDS which previously served as our household computer. The MT6458 was equipped with a Turion 64 X2 @1.6Ghz, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 160GB HDD, Radeon Xpress 1150 graphics, and a 1280 x 800 WXGA screen out of the factory. In this video I added 4GB of RAM into the system to prep it for Windows 10 and I also attempted to install a 64GB Msata SSD but that did not go as planned. I'm building my first computer! (and updates)

13:29
My build: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/wwjoshdew/saved/MxyKBm I only chose two graphics cards to see how big of a power supply I'll need! Because I eventually want to run SLI in the future. I want a power supply that can keep up when that time comes. As well as some parts will change (such as the CPU and Motherboard), possibly others. I want something that I'll have for a few years or more, and be happy with. https://www.shopmyexchange.com/astro-a50-wireless-headset-for-ps4/8113740 Also talk about the Pixel 3, Shield Portable, and etc. Twitter: @wwjoshdew email: josh at wwjoshdew.com Yeah, I just woke up. WHEN WAS THE FIRST COMPUTER INVENTED | ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

03:31
The computer as we know it today had its beginning with a 19th century English math professor Charles Babbage. He designed the Analytical Engine and it was this design that the basic framework of the computers of today are based on. Generally speaking, computers can be classified into three generations. Each generation lasted for a certain period of time, and each gave us either a new and improved computer or an improvement to the existing computer. First generation 1937 – 1946 The first generation began in 1937 when the first electronic digital computer was built by Dr. John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry. It was called the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC). In 1943 an electronic computer the Colossus was built for the military. Other developments continued until 1946 when the first general– purpose digital computer, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) was built. It is said that this computer weighed 30 tons, and had 18,000 vacuum tubes which was used for processing. When this computer was turned on for the first time lights dim in sections of Philadelphia. Computers of this generation could only perform single task, and they had no operating system. Second generation: 1947 – 1962 Second generation of computers used transistors instead of vacuum tubes which were more reliable. In 1951 the first computer for commercial use was introduced to the public--the Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC 1). Then in 1953 the International Business Machine or IBM computers made their mark in the computer world. During this generation of computers over 100 programming languages were developed. Computers had memory and operating systems and Storage media such as tape and disk were in use with printers for output. The third generation 1963. The invention of integrated circuit brought us the third generation of computers. With this invention computers became smaller, more powerful, more reliable and they are able to run many different programs at the same time. In1980 Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-Dos) was born and in 1981 IBM introduced the personal computer (PC) for home and office use. 3 years later Apple gave us the Macintosh computer with its icon driven interface and the 90s gave us Windows operating system. Thank you Charles Babbage for the computer ! Music: Wish You Were Here by Joakim Karud x Dyalla https://soundcloud.com/joakimkarud Music provided by Audio Library https://youtu.be/8jWfO4S3MBM

2000 Years of Computing History at a Museum in California

03:58
I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Technology Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Silicon Valley in Northern California is home to many of the world's largest technology companies. These include Apple, Google, Oracle, Intel, Cisco Systems and Hewlett-Packard. The valley is also home to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. It reopened in December after nineteen million dollars worth of improvements. One of the additions is a permanent exhibit called "Revolution: The First 2000 Years of Computing."Alex Bochannek is a curator at the museum. Mr. Bochannek says the new exhibit tells the story of more than one thousand historical objects. He said: "Some of the oldest items are actually not computers. They are devices that helped people calculate. And the first object people see walking into the exhibit is an abacus from the eighteen hundreds. Because the abacus is a daily-use device made from wood, few of them have survived." Mr. Bochannek says people have the chance to handle some of the objects in the exhibit. He says one of the more popular items is a portable computer from nineteen eighty-one. The Osborne One was about the size of a sewing machine and weighed more than ten kilograms. So, just being able to pick one of those up will help visitors understand how difficult portability was about thirty years ago. Visitors to the Computer History Museum can also see parts of one of the earliest large-scale electronic computing devices. The ENIAC or Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer was designed during World War Two. There are also pieces from the guidance computer that was used during the Apollo space missions. Mr. Bochannek says the "Revolution" exhibit is about more than the history of modern computing. He says it tells a much larger story about how these developments have affected society and culture, especially in recent years. He said the revolution to most people is that computers are everywhere. If you are crossing the street, there probably is a computer controlling the traffic light. Computers surround us. In some cases they are even inside us, like the cardiac pacemaker device in the exhibit. The Computer History Museum plans to launch an online version of the exhibit in March. The museum has one hundred thousand items in its complete collection. Only two percent of them are currently on display. But officials say seventy-five percent of the items will be viewable online. For VOA Special English I'm Alex Villarreal. (Adapted from a radio program broadcast 31Jan2011)

10 Secrets Hidden Inside Famous Logos

04:34
See more at www.brilliantnews.com Branding nowadays is absolutely everywhere you look. We are constantly bombarded with so many icons and logos that we rarely stop to look further into them, but there are some very interesting and bizarre secrets hiding within these 10 famous logos! 1. Hyundai Bet you think the H logo is just the first letter of the South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai? Of course you do! But it actually represents two figures: the happy client shaking hands with the Hyundai salesman, cleverly projecting the subliminal message of a successful car purchase. 2. Apple It was Rob Janoff who was tasked with creating the apple logo back in 1977. Janoff bought a bag of apples and spent the week sketching them, trying to represent the perfect angle where the fruit couldn´t be mistaken for a cherry. This was when he added a bite mark and stumbled across the similarity between Bite and Byte. This was definitely a selling point for Steve Jobs. 3. Vaio The first two letters in the computer company's name symbolize a digital waveform and the io is designed to look like a 1 and a 0, representing binary and the mix of analog and digital. Also the melody that sounds on startup actually derives from the dialtone sounds on a telephone keypad on typing V-A-I-O 4. Amazon Always aiming to please, Amazon designed their logo to represent a smile, projecting a sense of satifaction in their brand. Not only that, but the arrow also starts at ´a´ and finishes at 'z' implying that the company stocks every product you could possibly desire. 5. Toyota T-o-y-o-t-a. All the letters of the companies name can be found within the logo. But what does it represent? You're thinking A big strong buffalo's head or a cowboy with a hat, right? Wrong! It actually represents a needle and thread! This Japanese car manufacturer actually began making weaving machines and keeps its logo to this day! 6. Continental Sometimes overlooked, the continental logo is simple and clever. The first two letters are designed to symbolize a car wheel. 7. Toblerone This awkward-to-eat chocolate treat doesn't just have a simple mountain in its logo. Toblerone is made in Bern, Switzerland, so it´s no surprise to see one of the Swiss alps in its logo. But it also hides a secret bear hidden in the mountain, as Bern is known as the city of bears and the bear symbol is heavily decorated throughout the city. 8. BMW The German motor company started out making airplanes in 1916 and many think that the checker pattern in its logo represents the spinning propellers of an airplane. But it is actually just the design of the Bavarian flag, the part of Germany where the company originated. 9. Domino's Pizza In 1960 College dropout Tom Monaghan borrowed $900 to by a tiny pizza placed called Dominic's. 5 years later he bought 2 more locations. The former owner refused Tom the permission to use his name in the franchise so Tom turned it into Domino's. The dice in the logo represent the first restaurant that he bought, followed by the next two, and he had planned on adding numbers on every new opening. That was before he realized how big the franchise would become. 10. Unilever Who is Unilever, right? It's actually a huge corporation which owns over 400 famous brands. You've only got to look on the back of any of these popular products to find their logo hiding there. (Axe, Lipton, Ben and Jerry's, Dove, Heartbrand, Hellman's) But that's not all, the actual unilever logo is made up of 25 smaller logos, each with a rich meaning. A strand of hair or an icecream representing various brands, to more obscure references, like this bee... Which of these logos surprised you the most? Comment Below!
