John Pfordresher, "The Secret History Of Jane Eyre"

51:11
http://www.politics-prose.com/book/9780393248876 When Jane Eyre was published in 1847, it was subtitled An Autobiography and presented as a work edited by Currer Bell. It’s long been accepted that Charlotte Brontë used a male pseudonym in order to avoid misogynist bias against her novel. As Pfordresher, a professor of English at Georgetown University, shows, her identity was only one of many things Brontë wanted to hide. In this close reading of both Jane’s and her creator’s experiences, Pfordresher finds striking parallels that illuminate Brontë’s inspirations and motivations; he shows us new ways to understand the novel and adds to what we know of Charlotte’s relationships with her father and brother, her experiences as a governess, and her passion for a married man. Founded by Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade in 1984, Politics and Prose Bookstore is Washington, D.C.'s premier independent bookstore and cultural hub, a gathering place for people interested in reading and discussing books. Politics and Prose offers superior service, unusual book choices, and a haven for book lovers in the store and online. Visit them on the web at http://www.politics-prose.com/ Produced by Tom Warren

The Secret World Of Lewis Carroll (Alice In Wonderland Documentary) | Timeline

55:58
Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free. http://bit.ly/2O6zUsK ALICE IN WONDERLAND is said to be the most quoted book in print, second only to The Bible, with a passionate army of fans who regularly congregate around the world to celebrate its rich and playful world. But what of its creator, the mild-mannered and unassuming Oxford University Math Don, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, aka. Lewis Carroll? Famed not only for his wonderful stories, Carroll is also known for his ambiguous relationship with the young girl who inspired his most beloved creation, Alice Liddell, a seemingly innocent infatuation that he documented in his pioneering photography. With contributions from the likes of thespian Richard E. Grant, social commentator Will Self and author Philip Pullman, at once adoring and provocative this documentary casts a conflicted eye over the creation of Wonderland. Pouring through historical evidence and stories passed down through generations, hear the tale of Carroll’s first encounter with the three Liddell girls and the first telling of Alice’s tumble down the rabbit hole one summer’s afternoon in a boat upon the River Thames. Documentary first broadcast in 2015. Content licensed from All3 Media International. Produced by Swan Films.
The Best Gardening Books - "The Hidden Life of Trees"

10:47
There are some books that can transform the way you garden. "The Hidden Life of Trees" by Peter Wohlleben will not only change the way you garden, but also change the way you look at the world. It is one of the best gardening books because it can benefit every gardener who grows or hopes to grow trees. The subtitle, "What They Feel, How they Communicate -- Discoveries From a Secret World", hints at what you'll find inside, but doesn't adequately describe how the world of trees affects everything around us.
