Best Diet For Multiple Sclerosis? What we recommend might surprise you! Nutrition matters in Multiple Sclerosis. Unfortunately, there is NO magic diet that fixes MS. OK. Also there is paucity of scientific evidence to support any of the current so-called "MS diets." Now that doesn't mean that they do not work, it just means that I lack adequate objective evidence to recommend them. So where does that leave us? Are there ANY solid medically supported recommendations out there? YES. Yes there are. It turns out that a Heart Healthy diet is recommended for people with Multiple Sclerosis. Uncontrolled cardio-vascular risk factors (things like morbid obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure) actually drive the MS disease process FASTER! This is separate from the cardio-vascular concerns themselves. So, for this reason, it's a reasonable for people with Multiple Sclerosis to consider a heart health diet. This video reviews what a heart healthy diet entails, broken down into 4 sections. Then I included a bonus section on dietary supplements! 1. Watch equation calories in (mouth) vs calories out (exercise). Recommendations for daily physical activity and portion control are reviewed. Also discuss drinking more water! 2. Foods that are "Good to Eat" with a Heart Healthy Diet: These include all variety of fruits and veg, fiber rich Whole grain, Skinless poultry and fish (fish at least twice weekly), non tropical vegetable cooking oils (e.g. canola, corn, olive, peanut, soybean, sunflower), Low fat (1%) or fat free (skim) dairy products and low sodium foods (cook w/o or w/ little added salt). 3. Foods to "Limit/Avoid": These include foods with high saturated fats (fatty beef, lamb, port, poultry w/ skin, beef fat, lard, cream, butter, cheese). If you to have red meat, choose the leanest cut. This section also includes foods high in trans fats: This includes things like doughnuts, cookies, crackers, muffins, pies & cakes, commercially fried foods /baked goods with shortening or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. It's important to avoid sweets and sugar sweetened beverages. Also important to avoid foods high in sodium. prepare foods with little/no salt. 4. Alcohol and Tobacco: The heart healthy diet recommends limited alcohol intake to 1 drink a day for women and 2 drinks a day for men. It recommends that you DON'T SMOKE. A person who includes exercise with their diet will lose more than someone who is just dieting. Guys have more muscles than girls, they also have a higher metabolism rate and therefore will be able to lose weight faster than girls. Furthermore, if you are a physically active person, you will also lose more weight than if you are physically inactive. Your diet will also affect how much weight you can lose. If you are eating food that is high in calories, you will naturally take longer to lose weight. Weight loss totally depends on the calories you consume. If you take less calories than required by your body, you will lose weight automatically. There is no magic in losing weight. If your body needs 3000 calories per day and you start taking 2500 calories per day (500 less than required), you will lose 1 pound weight every week. Yes, taking 3500 less calorie will lose 1 pound of your weight. A safe amount of weight to lose is 1 - 2 pounds per week (approx. 0.5 - 1 kg). This equates to 3500 - 7000 calories per week. That means a calorie deficit of 500 - 1000 calories per day, which can be achieved by changing your routine only slightly. Many studies have shown that the best way to lose weight and keep it off is to work at it slow and steady. Remember you don't just want to quickly lose weight that you are likely to just gain right back, you want to CHANGE your lifestyle so that you can remain at a healthy weight throughout your entire life. If you try to lose a lot of weight in a month by not eating, all of your weight loss is going to come back once you resume your normal eating habits again. Only now because of the lack of food you were eating your metabolism rate is going to very low and your will not be able to burn as many calories as you used to. The most effective way to burn a significant number of calories in a short amount of time is to do Aerobic exercise. Such as cycling, running, swimming, brisk walking or kickboxing. Choose an activity that you enjoy and perform at least 30 minutes of activity on most, if not all, days of the week. For diet, get lean proteins, whole grains and low-fat dairy products to make sure you get the energy you need to fuel your workouts and maintain a healthy metabolism.

So this creates a mental barrier that says I can never do what those "more athletic" people do because I'm different, I happen to hate exercise. The reality is that there are plenty of people in incredible shape that hate exercise just as much as you do. But the difference is that they realize that their thoughts & their feelings are not the same as the actions they take. So regardless of what you think or how you feel about exercising, I want you take this one action that can change your whole life.... just.... show... up. Now why would you just show up to something that you absolutely hate well there are two major reasons. The first one which is actually my next tip can be summed up with another quote... "the delay of gratification is exactly what leads to gratification." The point here is that sure eating a good diet & exercising might suck. I mean with exercise alone if you're doing it right you'll be covered in sweat, barely able to breath, while feeling sore all over your body...that sounds like torture, & in a sense it is... but something far worse than that feeling is the feeling you get from constantly reaching for instant gratification. Anyone that has spent a whole day giving into their urges & seeking convenience, as well as expediency has felt like absolute garbage by the end of the day. However, by delaying that feeling of gratification you're actually able to attain it. I'll give you a couple examples if you lay around eating junk food all day long by the end of the day you're just laying there mindlessly shoving cheese doodles in your mouth that no longer even taste good, & your feeling tired, even though you did nothing you're feeling tired, practically nauseous & disgusted with yourself.

Weight loss isn't linear, your body weight changes will often be in spurts. A plateau is defined as a period of about 4 - 6 weeks where you were stuck at a certain body-weight. There are only 3 possibilities for a weight loss plateau: Type 1 - Not adhering to the program Type 2 - New caloric maintenance Type 3 - Water Retention Effect It can be one or a combination of all 3 factors. Type 1 Plateau - Not adhering to the program We can look at 2 categories: 1. Conscious - You know you're not following the program. The hard thing is essentially to admit to yourself that you are having a hard time following the diet. 2. Unconscious. People often fail without even knowing. Study of 224 subjects showed that people claimed 47% less caloric than they actually ate and overestimated activity by 51%. (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199212313272701#t=article) A few high-calorie meals here and there can easily erase a week's worth of caloric deficit. Both of these conscious and unconscious issues are usually solved by objective tracking using tools like MyFitnessPal. Type 2 Plateau - Arrival At New Caloric Maintenance This is normal and to be expected. This is why tracking is key. Breaking through type 2 plateaus Once you reach this plateau there are 3 options to overcome it: 1) Eat fewer calories 2) Add more exercise 3) Combination of both To pick which of those 3 you can use first you want to analyze and see what is the most realistic plan of action for you. Type 3 Plateau - Water Retention The "Whoosh" Effect This is where people panic after waking up every morning to see no progress on the scale. Maybe you're eating too much? Maybe you're not doing enough cardio? This is especially true for people who combine large amounts of activity with a large caloric deficit. Most lack the patience to wait it out so they cut calories further and/or increase activity which just makes the problem worse. Solution 1 (Best option): Patience Simply be patient if you are adhering to your diet and exercising, there is no magic that is preventing fat from being lost. It's just being masked by water retention! You will dump the water eventually. It's not uncommon to be stalled for 2-3 weeks to wake up 4-6 pounds lighter seemingly overnight just by waiting it out. Solution 2: High Carb Refeeds The objective of this study was to establish guidelines for properly refeeding prisoners. The men were getting 1500-1800 kcal per day in a controlled setting lasting 6 months, with moderate amounts of daily activity. At the start, they were losing weight linearly, about 2 lbs per week. However, after some time the weight loss occurred in "bursts" with long periods of plateaus. Water retention was noticeable in most men and in some cases quite severe. Half-way through the study, they allowed men a relief dinner to celebrate the progress. A big meal of 2300 kcal was served and that night everyone got up more often than usual to urinate. The next day they discovered that they had each lost several pounds. This was not a one-time occurrence. When the experiment was over and the refeeding began, the men continued to drop weight until calories were increased substantially. Solution 3 - Diet Break Take a break from dieting by going to maintenance calories for 1-2 weeks and get used to the new weight. Solution 4 - Relax Do something fun and relaxing that will reduce your stress levels and you'll experience a drop in weight. Often when people go on a holiday after a long diet this tends to happen. In order to burn fat, fat must first be broken down in the fat cell and moved into the bloodstream. The main antioxidant in tea, EGCG, can help inhibit an enzyme that breaks down the hormone norepinephrine. This means that there will be more norepinephrine released. Norepinephrine is used by the nervous system as a signal to the fat cells, telling them to break down fat. Green tea can help us burn extra fat from exercise.
