Strange Facts About Dreams

03:35
Amazing things that happen to people while dreaming. Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg Description: Sleep is something that we do and need on a regular basis in order for our bodies to function. For most of us that sleep, we tend to experience some sort of dreaming, where our minds take off and we experience another world of existence. Sometimes we have good dreams, and sometimes we have nightmares that can terrify us to the core and force us to sleep with the lights on for the rest of the night. But our dreams are so much more than a nightly occurrence. But instead, they offer glimpses into our very own psyches and tell us so much about our psychology and how we deal with stress, anxiety, and overall feelings of our life. Studies have shown that we experience 4-6 dreams per night, which we quickly forget within the first ten minutes that we wake up. In the time that we dream, it can total out to be about 6 years of our life that we spend dreaming. While sleeping is typically perceived as a time of rest, scientists have discovered that the brain is busier than ever in our sleep while it is recharging. In fact, the brain can actually learn more efficiently and uses sleep and dreaming to process the new information it has received during the day. In dreaming, the brain can also sort through problems and dilemmas and come up with solutions. Needless to say, the brain is more active while it is recharging. This stage is known as rapid eye movement, and the body will also release a chemical that paralyzes you so that you don’t act out your dreams. If you wake up suddenly while the chemical is still present, sleep paralysis can result. If the brain hasn’t completely woken up yet, people can hallucinate and see their dreams before them. The result is the person is paralyzed, unable to speak, and could possibly be experiencing some pretty terrifying images that they don’t understand. Those who are blind can also dream, but in a different way. For those who have been blind since birth, they have no concept of visual stimulation, and therefore, can’t process visual imagery in their sleep. Instead, the blind experience dreams with their other senses in a heightened form, such as sound, taste, smell, and touch. While dreaming, we also act out our fears and personal insecurities. If you’re in a serious relationship, you’ve probably experienced a dream or two where your significant other is having an affair. Sometimes, these dreams are so real that the dreamer is still angry upon awakening. As long as the line between reality and personal worries is clear, then hopefully the drama stays in dream land. Sometimes our dreams can lead to more physical results, such as nocturnal emissions, or better known as wet dreams. Not just males experience this kind of pleasure and euphoria in their dreams, but females as well. This phenomenon is common in adolescence, but adults can have these sort of dreams too. These are but a few of the strange things about dreams. Check out the video and find out what other extraordinary things your brain is trying to tell you! What Happens To Your Body And Brain If You Don't Get Sleep | The Human Body

04:50
Sleep expert Matthew Walker breaks down the many effects of sleep deprivation on your brain and body. Following is the transcript of the video: Matthew Walker: My name is Matthew Walker, I am a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and I am the author of the book "Why We Sleep." We certainly know that a lack of sleep will actually prevent your brain from being able to initially make new memories, so it's almost as though without sleep the memory inbox of the brain shuts down and you can't commit new experiences to memory. So those new incoming informational emails are just bounced, and you end up feeling as though you're amnesiac. You can't essentially make and create those new memories. We also know that a lack of sleep will lead to an increased development of a toxic protein in the brain that is called beta amyloid and that is associated with Alzheimer's disease because it is during deep sleep at night when a sewage system within the brain actually kicks in to high gear and it starts to wash away this toxic protein, beta amyloid. So if you're not getting enough sleep each and every night, more of that Alzheimer's-related protein will build up. The more protein that builds up, the greater your risk of going on to develop dementia in later life. What are the effects of sleep deprivation on the body? Well, there are many different effects. Firstly, we know that sleep deprivation affects the reproductive system. We know that men who are sleeping just five to six hours a night have a level of testosterone which is that of someone ten years their senior. So a lack of sleep will age you by almost a decade in terms of that aspect of virility and wellness. We also know that a lack of sleep impacts your immune system. So after just one night of four to five hours of sleep, there is a 70% reduction in critical anticancer-fighting immune cells called natural killer cells. And that's the reason that we know that short sleep duration predicts your risk for developing numerous forms of cancer. And that list currently includes cancer of the bowel, cancer of the prostate, as well as cancer of the breast. In fact, the link between a lack of sleep and cancer is now so strong that recently the World Health Organization decided to classify any form of nighttime shift work as a probable carcinogen. So in other words, jobs that may induce cancer because of a disruption of your sleep rate rhythms. We also know that a lack of sleep impacts your cardiovascular system because it is during deep sleep at night that you receive this most wonderful form of effectively blood pressure medication. Your heart rate drops, your blood pressure goes down. If you're not getting sufficient sleep, you're not getting that reboot of the cardiovascular system, so your blood pressure rises. You have, if you're getting six hours of sleep or less, a 200% increased risk of having a fatal heart attack or stroke in your lifetime. There is a global experiment that is performed on 1.6 billion people twice a year and it's called daylight saving time. And we know that in the spring, when we lose one hour of sleep, we see a subsequent 24% increase in heart attacks the following day. Another question, perhaps, is what is the recycle rate of a human being? How long can we actually last without sleep before we start to see declines in your brain function or even impairments within your body? And the answer seems to be about 16 hours of wakefulness. Once you get past 16 hours of being awake, that's when we start to see mental deterioration and physiological deterioration in the body. We know that after you've been awake for 19 or 20 hours, your mental capacity is so impaired that you would be as deficient as someone who was legally drunk behind the wheel of a car. So if you were to ask me what is the recycle rate of a human being, it does seem to be about 16 hours and we need about eight hours of sleep to repair the damage of wakefulness. Wakefulness essentially is low-level brain damage. ------------------------------------------------------ #Sleep #SleepDeprivation #TechInsider Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. 8 Dream Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

08:07
Do dreams actually have meanings? Or are they just short movies that your subconsciousness randomly creates? Dreams have always fascinated people. To this day, psychologists conduct extensive research to try and figure out what happens in our mind and body when we sleep. In ancient Egypt, those with colorful and vivid dreams were considered to be special people. So special that most of their dreams were recorded on papyrus! The Egyptians firmly believed that divine revelation came from dreams, in which you could find all the answers to your worries and gain wisdom. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Sigmund Freud, a famous neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, introduced his perception of dreaming in his book The Interpretation of Dreams. According to Freud, when your consciousness is asleep and resting, your subconsciousness wakes up and produces images that give you a little sneak peek into your deepest self. TIMESTAMPS: Flying 1:45 Falling 2:24 Being lost 3:22 Being chased 4:00 Being trapped 4:46 Losing teeth 5:32 Being naked 6:14 Meeting a celebrity 7:00 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Flying might show that you have too much on your plate at the moment and that you desperately want to “fly above” all your problems. Either way, these dreams are a way for your subconsciousness to tell you that something needs to be changed if you want to feel this level of lightness and happiness in reality. - If somebody pushed you, this means you're putting too much pressure on yourself. If you know the person who pushed you, they're probably the one to blame for your stress. - The most obvious one is that you have lost your way in reality, and you know that deep down — but you keep going. Your subconsciousness is trying to reach out and warn you that you're going in the wrong direction. - Dreams of being chased are especially common among people who suffer from anxiety and depression. Psychologically speaking, these dreams reflect that you're trying to avoid something in your waking life. So next time you have this dream, try to remember who was chasing you. - Psychologists suggest that being trapped in a dream can show that you're holding on to your past and, therefore, can't live fully in your present. Take some time to re-evaluate your behavior, habits, and attitude. Make sure they reflect the current you, not somebody you used to be. - Psychologists are sure that dreams about your teeth are closely connected to the fear of losing your attractiveness and youth. You're afraid that people will reject you if you become less appealing. And even though it seems like a completely natural fear, if such dreams are recurring, it's a serious problem. - If you notice that you often have dreams in which you appear naked in front of people, this might indicate that you often try to hide your true personality to please others. In this way, “naked” dreams are similar to those in which you lose teeth — with one little exception: it's not about your looks. - According to Lauri Loewenberg, dream expert and author of the book Dream on It: Unlock Your Dreams, Change Your Life, if celebrities are frequent guests in your dreams, it may signify your desire for the validation and recognition you're not getting. Did you know that if you live up to the age of 75, you’ll have spent 25 of those years sleeping? That’s one-third of your life… asleep! Of that third, a whole 6 years is dedicated to dreaming. Well, if you’re gonna spend so much time off in dreamland, you might as well know get to know some useful facts about this magical place! I like this one. It turns out, strangers' faces in your dreams are actual faces you’ve seen in real life! Our mind isn’t as good at inventing faces as it is at recognizing or remembering them. So, that random stranger who held a door open for you like 8 years ago, their face could’ve made it into one of your dreams by now! Isn't it amazing? The famous pro-golfer Jack Nicklaus even cured a bad playing streak by figuring out in a dream that he was holding his club all wrong! - Bad dreams are much more common that happy fun dreams. In general, the most frequently felt emotions in dreams are anxiety, anger, sadness, and fear. - Being able to control your dreams is something called lucid dreaming. It’s basically a combination of simultaneously being in a state of REM sleep (which is when you dream) and in a state of consciousness. - The reality is that we ALL dream, on average about 4-7 dreams per night. It’s just that up to 60% of people don’t remember them at all. - While science is still trying to figure this one out, it’s been proven that all animals experience cycles of REM and non-REM sleep and even show the same brain activity as humans do during dreaming. - According to “The Complete Book of Dreams” by Julia and Derek Parker, some experts suggest that cave paintings are actually records of dreams. - Dreams speak a very exclusive and symbolic language, so they’re rarely what they seem. Only you can decipher all those absurd little movies playing in your head as you sleep! - Even if someone is blind from birth, their dreams can be just as intense as a sighted person’s. Only, there’s one exception: they involve all the other senses except sight. - Cross-culturally, some of the most common dreams are of being chased, being attacked, falling, repeating an action over and over again, being frozen with fear, and being late for something. - Men’s dreams include other men about 70% of the time. Women’s dreams, however, involve both men and women equally. - You might think all of you is resting at night, but your brain is actually is more active during sleep than when you’re awake. - If there’s something happening around you while you’re dreaming, like drilling for example, you might start dreaming that you’re at the dentist getting a cavity filled. - In studies done from 1915 through the 1950s, researchers found that the vast majority of people only dreamed in black and white. But everything changed in the 1960s, and people slowly started dreaming in color a lot more. Why Do Antidepressants Cause Vivid Dreams?

02:59
If you have taken antidepressant medication like Zoloft, Prozac or Lexapro to name a few, you may have experienced bizarre or intense dreams. This very disturbing, it does not mean the medication is making you worse. Antidepressants suppress the REM stage of sleep which is the stage where you dream. The effect of this suppression is that you can get REM rebound where you experience very intense dreams. Changing medication may help as the effect may not manifest as much with the different medication. I Decided to Sleep for 4 Hours a Day, See What Happened

12:29
One of the Bright Side writers decided to adjust his daily routine to leave only 2-4 hours for sleep! Do you ever think about how cool it would be if there were more hours in a day? You would easily have time for everything: work, hobbies, friends, and family or just lazing around doing nothing at all. But enough dreaming, let's get back to reality. The only way to make it happen is by sleeping less, but would that actually work without turning you into a tired grouch? TIMESTAMPS Where did the idea come from? 0:50 Day 1 2:48 Day 2 3:20 Day 3 3:46 Day 4 4:15 Day 5 4:55 Days 6-7 5:41 Days 8-10 6:20 Days 11-14 6:55 Pros of polyphasic sleep 7:30 Cons of polyphasic sleep 8:46 My thoughts after the experiment 9:48 SUMMARY If your life is like one big to-do list that you just can't seem to keep up with, then polyphasic sleep is probably for you. All jokes aside, I definitely became more productive, and I have a lot of spare time that allows me to do everything I want and even more. On the other hand, it can be difficult since the whole world is on a completely different regimen. Your friends and family might think it’s weird when you tell them you can't go out with them or ask them to pause a movie so you can take a nap. In any case, it's your choice to make. Just do your homework first, and then go for it! If this sort of dramatic change isn’t for you, don't worry! There are still lots of things you can do to improve your productivity. What Your Dog's Sleeping Position Reveals About Its Character

10:01
What does a dog’s sleeping position mean? Most dog owners know about their pets' habits and easily understand when their dog is happy, worried, surprised, or scared. You can also reveal some of your dog's secrets by analyzing its favorite resting position. TIMESTAMPS: The Snowball 1:17 The Pancake 2:12 Superman 3:26 Curled up in a ball 4:29 On its back 5:36 The Dead Cockroach 6:27 The Sphinx 7:36 The Burrower 7:18 Bonus: How to understand that your dog is absolutely unique 8:50 #dogssleep #understanddog #dogcharacter Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY: - The snowball is one of the most popular positions among dogs — and among cats as well! In this position, a dog curves its spine, and its nose is located not far from its tail. - The pancake is the most restorative position for sleep, and, in most cases, that's exactly when REM sleep occurs. So don't get spooked if your doggy starts to kick and paddle out of the blue. It's just acting out its dreams. - If you notice that your adult dog prefers Superman position, it may indicate that it feels hot. Perhaps it's been a sweltering day or your dog has been playing and exercising too hard. Your dog may be simply exhausted. - You can sometimes catch your pet curled up in a tight ball with its tail wrapped around its body and its paws neatly tucked away. This way of sleeping resembles the fetal position in humans. - If your dog prefers sleeping on its back with its front legs bent over its chest and its back legs extended, you’ll probably guess that it feels at ease. - By sleeping in the dead cockroach position, your pet can be cooling off. You must have noticed that some areas of dogs' tummies aren't as fluffy as the rest of their body. - The sphinx position allows your dog to take off running as soon as you call it. Not many dogs sleep this way, and this is kind of a transitional state between wakefulness and rest. - If your pooch is a burrower, it needs more affection and attention than any other animal. When such dogs snuggle into something cozy, they are searching for security and comfort. - If you notice that one part of your pet rests on a comfortable sofa and the other resides on a hard, unforgiving floor AND your dog is sound asleep at this time, congratulations! You're the owner of a unique dog! The Mind After Midnight: Where Do You Go When You Go to Sleep?

01:25:41
We spend a third of our lives asleep. Every organism on Earth—from rats to dolphins to fruit flies to microorganisms—relies on sleep for its survival, yet science is still wrestling with a fundamental question: Why does sleep exist? During Shakespeare and Cervantes' time, sleep was likened to death, with body and mind falling into a deep stillness before resurrecting each new day. In reality, sleep is a flurry of action. Trillions of neurons light up. The endocrine system kicks into overdrive. The bloodstream is flooded with a potent cocktail of critically vital hormones. Such vibrant activity begs the question: Where do we go when we go to sleep? Based on new sleep research, there are tantalizing signposts. We delved into the one-eyed, half-brained sleep of some animals; eavesdropped on dreams to understand their cognitive significance; and investigated extreme and bizarre sleeping behaviors like “sleep sex” and “sleep violence.” The World Science Festival gathers great minds in science and the arts to produce live and digital content that allows a broad general audience to engage with scientific discoveries. Our mission is to cultivate a general public informed by science, inspired by its wonder, convinced of its value, and prepared to engage with its implications for the future. Benny, Jr. having a minor "episode." This is REM-Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD). Benny's story is here: http://www.beaglerescueleague.org/adoption/available-beagles/dreaming-of-a-better-life REM-Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) has been a diagnosed sleep disorder in humans, and through animal research, was discovered to exist in dogs as well. Sam's life was saved because of the help of two scientists who collaborated to help us figure out what was going on with Sam. A comprehensive page with information about what we went through with Sam (the initial paragraphs related to RBD) is here: www.withoutavoice.net/Sam.html Many of you have asked us about our available beagle, Benny, Jr. Yes, Benny has RBD, too. This is a very MILD episode for Benny, but would have been typical for Sam. Benny has a bite history, obviously, because he was in homes that did not understand what this was, and his ABSOLUTE need to be crated when he sleeps. If you are sleeping next to Benny, he WILL bite you, but totally unconsciously. He was of course on the euthanasia list of a shelter as well, but we knew from the stories and history what this was. We are sharing this video and information to help educate people about this disorder, since we know of dogs needlessly euthanized due to lack of understanding. This is not a typical "nightmare" most of our dogs experience because of the escalation into an "attack." Benny was being monitored during this for the intention of recording it, but is otherwise crated for sleeping. There is a NEUROLOGICAL condition, not a behavioral one. It should be assessed by a professional to determine such a neurological condition from a behavioral condition such as territorial sleep aggression or another type of behavioral aggression. Please don't diagnose things yourself, but you can search for answers for your dog by perhaps keeping the possibility of RBD in your mind and looking for professionals who may be able to help you and your dog. Benny has been with us for 3 years and while his foster mom loves him dearly, he is still looking for a forever home without young children and with adopters who can understand and respect this disorder and what Benny needs.

Why Insomnia on the Ketogenic Diet?

Take Dr. Berg's Free Keto Mini-Course: http://pxlme.me/-i717vtY Food Based B-Vitamins: http://bit.ly/nutritional-yeast-tablets-cart Electrolyte Powder (minerals): http://bit.ly/Electrolyte-Powder-Cart Sleep Aid: http://bit.ly/Sleep-Aid-Cart Dr. Berg talks about why a person can't sleep with the ketogenic diet. This is usually because of low calcium. But it could also be other minerals - magnesium or even potassium. Take calcium magnesium together. Potassium deficiency can also effect sleep but this is mainly due to low amounts of vegetables. Your sleep issue could also be a vitamin B1 deficiency. And the last thing could be consuming too much protein as protein is a stimulant. Sleeping rabbit dreaming about making a poop

02:08
A tiny pet bunny rabbit named Pipkin is sleeping and dreaming about going to the bathroom. He is a free roam rabbit who is litter trained, so he is obviously dreaming about going to the bathroom in his litter box. The rabbit is also eating, digging, and running in his dream. The rabbit then stretches and yawns, and it looks like he woke up at first. However, we think the bunny rabbit was asleep the whole time - as evidenced by his eyes looking all crazy! Do rabbits do sleep with their eyes open? Yes, sometimes rabbits do! :) When Pipkin rabbit really starts dreaming, like REM sleep, the rabbit tilts his head back all of the way, like you saw at the end. The rabbit will then start to run. Then the rabbit starts to chew, or to eat something - almost like the rabbit ran over to a delicious fruit or vegetables and starting eating. We are often asked can rabbits be trained to use a litter box? Yes, rabbits can easily be trained to use a litter box! This rabbit uses his litter box most of the time, but sometimes he has an accident, which is totally understandable if the rabbit is sleeping and dreaming! The rabbit loves digging, running, and eating in his dreams! Is it the cutest thing ever? We hope you think so! Thanks so much for watching our cute rabbit video! The science of how much sleep you actually need

04:04
Watch the whole series: http://bit.ly/2hbZVZE Getting plenty of sleep each night is important to maintaining a healthy and productive life. But how much sleep do you actually need? Joe Avella and Jessica Orwig tackle this question on the Facebook series "Science the $#!* out of it." For the average adult, the National Sleep Foundation recommends 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. Today, however, many Americans are sleep-deprived, which can have significant adverse effects on physical and cognitive functions. The reason why some people don’t get enough sleep can be accredited to busy modern lifestyles. But there are other reasons too. It turns out habits such as using electronic devices or drinking alcohol right before bedtime can be detrimental to getting a good night’s sleep. I've seen a lot of these "giant animal" works of art going around, and I loved them so much that I decided to make my own version:) My husband said that this cat could be a wise spirit who humans can visit in the deep, dark woods and ask him one question. I like this story:) Oh, and we love a giant cat's giant dreamcatcher chimes, lol. Maybe he's the guardian of dreams and catches your nightmares!! I love that too! Or the cat is the nightmare himself. I'll let you interpret it:) Not gonna lie, this is my favorite video I ever made. Behind the scenes video coming in a couple of days! I will finally show how I make my videos:) Enjoy. Is Lucid Dreaming Dangerous? - Sleep Cycles

10:03
Disclaimer - Perma-Lucid Dreamers This video is for people who are or want to learn to Lucid Dream, not for Perma-Lucid Dreamers. Perma-Lucid Dreamers are people who rarely lose lucidity and are lucid every night, sometimes during every dream or even for the entire night. The issues related to that are unique and will not affect the average person learning to Lucid Dream. While researching whether or not Lucid Dreams cause a person to have less restful sleep, I found that Perma-Lucid Dreamers do experience this. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- References: 2:00 - Time Dilation This podcast both explains Time Dilation and OpheliaBlue gives a great first hand example. Ultimately, it is your decision. 5:53 - Do Lucid Dreams make you tired? Dream Views - http://www.dreamviews.com A forum where Lucid Dreamers come together to share ideas, inspiration, and information. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does Lucid Dreaming increase REM sleep? Dream Stabilization techniques do not make you sleep longer or remain in REM sleep longer. You may think you are prolonging your REM sleep, but the reality is dream time is vastly different than waking time. When people have used clocks to measure how much real time they were asleep they were shocked to see that a lucid dream that felt like it took thirty minutes only lasted a few minutes. It’s called Time Dilation. Does dream journaling increase your chances of waking up after every dream? If so, is this unhealthy? I think this depends solely upon you and how you journal. We all wake up at intervals through the night, called micro-awakenings or micro-arousal. Most of us don’t remember these awakenings because we simply drift back to sleep too quickly. Interrupted Sleep is defined as four prolonged awakenings spread over eight hours in bed. There is nothing to worry about if you wake up a few times each night unless you notice difficulty in returning to sleep. Does having Lucid Dreams make you feel tired? The majority of people felt more rested after a Lucid Dream than how they feel after a normal dream. It’s even common to experience a sense of euphoria. It is commonly recognized by sleep scientists that good dreams leave us happy and refreshed while bad dreams leave us fatigued and moody. Since lucidity often gives you control over your dreams, allowing you to turn a bad dream into a good one, it is a good way to increase your odds of having a “good night’s sleep.” Are there Lucid Dreaming techniques that will negatively affect my sleep? If you are purposefully manipulating your sleep schedule, such as with WBTB or REM Rebound techniques, you are disrupting your natural sleep and this can cause negative side effects. Are there Lucid Dreaming techniques or aids that positively affect my sleep? The basic, fundamental Lucid Dreaming aid is to have a regular sleep schedule. The one thing you will be advised to do before you try anything else as a Lucid Dreamer is to have a set time when you go to bed every night and to sleep for the recommended amount of time for your age group. Also, meditation is highly recommended for increasing lucidity.

If you've had a nightmare, you're sleeping for too long.

01:26
If you've had a nightmare, you're sleeping for too long. Scientists have found that people who sleep more than 9 hours tend to have more nightmares. According to New Scientist reports, Stephanie Rek and his team from Oxford University found that more than 9 hours of sleeping people were having more nightmares in their research on 846 people. People in the study were asked how many times they had nightmares and how bad the nightmares were in the last 2 weeks. It was found that one of the factors that had the greatest effect on the nightmares was the fear of future or something to be wronged as the post-traumatic stress disorder, divorce, legal problems, anxiety, sleeping period and the amount of alcohol they used. Determining that worrying before sleep caused bad dreams, the team discovered that sleeping more than 9 hours increased the frequency of nightmares. Rek said that more sleep, sleep increases the REM (rapid eye movement), people see more nightmares in this sleeping environment. In the study, alcohol use and exercise did not directly correlate with nightmares. This result surprised them and reminded that previous studies have increased the possibility of nightmares by increasing alcohol use during the second half of the night.
