Central obesity, or obesity around your mid-abdomen is actually the most dangerous kind. So one thing we like to do in the office is measure a patient's waist circumference, to see if they're at risk for some of the other illnesses that go along with central obesity. The way to do this is you can take a tape measure, and you measure your circumference, starting at the highest point of your hipbones. So in men, if the number is greater than 40 inches, then you're considered to have central obesity. In women, the number is 35 inches. Another way to determine whether you're obese by using a tape measure is to measure your waist to hip ratio. The way to do that is take your tape measure and measure the narrowest part of your waist, then you're going to divide that, by the number you get when you measure the widest part of your hips. In men, if the number is greater than one, you're considered obese, and in women if it's greater than 0.8, that's considered to be obese. So remember that people store fat differently and so, if you do calculate that you have a healthy waist circumference, but you still think that you might be obese, or your BMI comes out to a number that considers you obese, you still need to take that seriously and try to make the necessary changes to lose weight, so that you can become healthier.

A high percentage of abdominal (visceral) fat within the body has been linked to increased risk of coronary heart disease and diabetes. The greater the measurement, the higher correlation with poor health and low levels of fitness. Key Training Get waist measurement Compare normative ranges Find training level Equipment: Use a flexible tape measure and pen for marking the skin. Procedure: The waist measurement is taken at the mid-point between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone (illiac crest), and is generally the narrowest point of your torso. If you are unsure if this measurement was taken at the correct point, take several measurements at different levels and then just choose the lowest measurement. When measuring, you need to make sure the tape is not too tight or too loose, is lying flat on the skin, and is horizontal. Scoring: After measuring your waistline, look up the tables (see resources) to view your training status. If your test level identifies a training status that you feel does not apply to you or does not reflect your fitness level, then simply use your own judgement to select an appropriate measurement and associated training status. For example, if you are a male with a waist measurement of 103 centimetres; the associated program for that level of fitness is the Beginner Level Program. However if you have a robust body type and have been training for longer than two months consistently, then the Beginner Level may not reflect your true level of fitness. Flutter Kicks Workout instructions: - 3 Sets - 20 Reps - 30 seconds break time between set 2x a day, six days a week. Once in the morning and once at night. START WAIST MEASUREMENT: 32 inches AFTER TWO WEEKS MEASUREMENT: 28 inches How to do the exercises: Sit-ups Lie on your back. Bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor or mat. Position your heels about 1 to 1 1/2 feet in front of your tailbone. Place your fingertips behind your head or cross your arms on your chest. Squeeze your shoulder blades together. Exhale then tighten your abs and curl up toward your bent knees. Do not pull on your neck. Keep your head in line with your spine, tilting your chin forward slightly as you come up. Keep the bottom of your feet, your lower back and your tailbone flat against the floor throughout the exercise. Curl toward your thighs until you are in a seated position. Mountain Climbers Assume a push-up position with your arms straight and your body in a straight line from your head to your ankles. Without changing the posture of your lower back (it should be arched), raise your right knee toward your chest. Pause, return to the starting position and repeat with your left leg. That’s one rep. Alternate until you’ve completed all your reps. Modified V-Ups Lie faceup on the floor with your legs and arms straight. Hold your arms straight above the top of your head. In one movement, simultaneously lift your torso and legs as if you're trying to touch your knees. Lower your body back to the starting position. Flutter Kicks Lie on your back with your legs together and extended out straight. You can place your arms out to the sides of your body with your palms down. Contract your abs and keep them tight throughout the exercise. Lift your legs off the ground about 6 inches. Lift your head and shoulders slightly off the ground. Raise on leg up a few inches and bring it back to the starting position. While it is on its way down raise the other leg up. In this video I am showing how i measure my bust, waist and hips. Two main reasons why you should take your body measurements is: 1. If you are starting an exercise routine you would want to take a before and after to track your progress. 2. If you are shopping online, when looking at a size chart, you need to know your measurements so that you can order the correct size. If you are interested in losing inches around your waist. Try doing the P90x Ab ripper part 1 and part 2 exercise routine found on youtube. Both parts together is 15 minutes. I recommend it because i tried it myself for 2 months and saw and felt a significant difference. I lost 2 inches around my waist in 2 months. Unfortunately I stopped doing it for the past month which I regret but I am going to be starting back up. I will post a video on the actual exercise routine soon.
