This is an introductory video on K-maps in digital electronics series. What if instead of representing truth tables, we arranged in a grid format. This grid-like representation is called Karnaugh Map or Kmap. Each position in a grid corresponds to a truth table entry. But why do we need to represent the same information in two ways? This will be explained in the next video where we will learn how to group terms in Kmap. Consider this truth table which has 2 inputs. It will have four input combinations. In K maps, the values inside the squares are copied from the output column of the truth table. Around the edge of the K map is the values of the two input variable. A is at the top and B is along the left-hand side. A can take maximum 2 values 0 and 1. Same for input B. Consider truth table for a 3 input variable. Since it would have 8 combinations there will be 8 cells in Kmap. The order of terms isn't random. The terms go 00, 01, 11, 10. The terms are not arranged in a numerical sequence! Imagine moving around in the K Map. Every time you cross a horizontal term only one variable changes value. Same goes along the vertical side. In the truth table, 0 corresponds to a complemented variable, and a 1 corresponds to a true variable. For example, consider 010. It corresponds to A’ AND B AND C’. It is called SOP or sum of products. Each single cell that contains a 1 represents a minterm in the function, and each minterm can be thought of as a "product" term. Thus, this expression is called SOP or sum of the product. Similarly, a maxterm is a Boolean expression resulting in a 0 for the output of a single cell expression, and 1s for all other cells in the K map, or truth table. Thus for N variables, you will have 2^N possible combinations and 2^N places in a truth table or Karnaugh Map. For 4 input variable, you will consider 16 cells in Kmap. A AND B along this direction and C AND D along this direction.
