A true vacuum refers to the complete absence of matter. Sound waves can travel only through matter. So, sound needs a physical medium in order to travel anywhere. Wave that requires medium to propagate is called Mechanical Wave. For example - a sound wave. Sound cannot travel in the absence of a medium. The speed of sound is slower than the speed of light, one of the main reason behind this is sound requires medium to travel whereas light can travel in vacuum also. This video is an entry for the Breakthrough Junior Challenge 2015 which gives a unique visualization of Special Relativity using hyperbolic geometry. This idea was inspired by the famous woodcut by M.C. Escher Circle Limit III. http://www.mcescher.com/gallery/recognition-success/circle-limit-iii/ I liked the idea of making a video on Special Relativity because I had already explored the use of M.C. Escher’s woodcut Circle Limit III as a teaching tool for explaining the hyperbolic geometry of Minkowski spacetime. The main intuition is that the principle of Relativity asserts that the manifold of frames of reference is homogeneous and isotropic, and there are exactly three geometries associated with this: Sphere (which exists as rotations through space), Plane (which represents Galilean Relativity) and the Hyperbolic Plane (which exists as rotations through spacetime). I wanted to find a way to use this intuition without overwhelming the audience with technical terms. When the timelike unit vectors in 2+1 spacetime (which correspond to velocity four-vectors) are projected onto a disk (see Wikipedia: “Hyperboloid model”), the result is the Poincare Disk Model, which is (almost) the geometry portrayed in Circle Limit III. I had never seen anyone to use this as a visualization of Special Relativity, and so I decided to make the video. Is interstellar travel doomed to remain in the realm of science fiction? Sticking to near future space propulsion only, how close can we get to the speed of light? This video looks at the current spacecraft speed records with Apollo 10 holding the record for the fastest manned spacecraft, New Horizons probe for the fastest Earth escape velocity and the Helios probes for the fastest heliocentric velocity. But Solar Probe Plus will beat that when it launches in 2018. While Voyager 1 doesn't set any speed records, it was the first spacecraft to leave the solar system, so therefore the fastest solar system escape velocity by default. For beating these speeds, this video explores what is possible in the near future only, so no antimatter, Alcubierre drives (warp), ramjets, etc... The EM drive is left out until it's proven with actual reproducible results in space. Project Daedalus and the updated Project Icarus represent sound concepts for fusion spacecraft. IKAROS was the first successful demonstration of solar sail technology but hopefully the planetary society is not far behind with their LightSail cubsat (not covered in this video). But what appears to have the most potential to reach the nearest star to our own, Proxima Centauri and it's newly discovered planet Proxima b is Breakthrough Starshot. This relates primarily to the way in which an athlete uses either speed or relative power to influence maximal jump height. This video will show you how these exist on a spectrum vs. independent of one another. If you find this information interesting, I would love if you'd feel comfortable sharing it. I have been working for the years in the field of jump technique to create a language and further understanding of otherwise more complicated topics. Here are two distinct ways to determine what end of the spectrum you fall closer to: 1) Difference between countermovement (standing jump) and full approach jump. A full approach greater than 4" better than a CM effort indicates a more effective use of speed, whereas less than 4" shows a reliance upon relative power. 2) Degree of knee flexion - The greater the degree of flexion during the amortization (loading) of a take-off can be an indication of the necessity for relative power output. NOTE: Just because an athlete displays qualities of one end of the spectrum DOES NOT mean they do not display qualities of the other end. Extra info: The BrahMos (Hindi: ब्रह्मोस brahmos, Russian: Брамосl) is a short-range ramjet supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarine, ships, aircraft, or land. It is a joint venture between the Russian Federation's NPO Mashinostroeyenia and India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) who have together formed BrahMos Aerospace. It is based on the Russian P-800 Oniks cruise missile and other similar sea-skimming Russian cruise missile technology. The name BrahMos is a portmanteau formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia. It is the world's fastest anti-ship cruise missile in operation. The missile travels at speeds of Mach 2.8 to 3.0. The land-launched and ship-launched versions are already in service, with the air and submarine-launched versions currently in the testing phase. An air-launched variant of BrahMos is planned which came out in 2012. A hypersonic version of the missile, BrahMos-II, is also presently under development with speed of Mach 7-8 to boost aerial fast strike capability. It is expected to be ready for testing by 2017. Though India had wanted the BrahMos to be based on a mid range cruise missile like P-700 Granit. Its propulsion is based on the Russian missile, and missile guidance has been developed by BrahMos Aerospace. The missile is expected to reach a total order US$13 billion. Getting 'stacked' (TM Project Pure Athlete) refers to our ability to hit and stabilize a mechanically advantageous position during the take-off (Loading/Amortization Phase) of a jump. This position sees the ankles - hips - shoulders in a relatively straight line of action. Picture the frame of a home - The studs (2x4's) in the walls would be stacked vertically to ensure the forces of the floors and roof above it don't crumple the home to the ground. Even a slight deviation in a 2x4 will put more stress on that weak point. When we apply forces to the ground during a jump, energy will leak out of the weak points (areas not in line with our angles of action). *See my video on Stability Drills to find appropriate movements to help reinforce these stacked positions.
