The D-C-G Trick : What Famous Bands Did With Easy Chords!

35035 ratings | 7412056 views
*new videos, giveaways and more at www.song-bike.com !! * www.facebook.com/mysongbike UPDATE : I just posted a video of yet ANOTHER song that uses this trick: "Small Town" by John Mellencamp. Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKGVRA6nZss Here's how to take your 3 favorite chords and turn them into something SPECIAL! So many songwriters and bands have employed the trick found here, and you can't really play a lot of famous tunes WITHOUT this technique. it's a MUST for your Bag of Tricks! It's not that it's hard - it's EASY but you wouldn't think to do this D-C-G Trick without someone showing you. So it's a quick way to sound pro, and to learn a handful of famous tunes in the process. This D-C-G Trick has been used by acoustic AND electric guitar players, both with fingerpicking and flatpicking. If you can play your basic D C and G chords these might even feel easier. But these modified chords have a different musical tone than the standard D, C, and G and that's the trick! **ALERT: there are a few times in the video when the acoustic guitar takes on a sweet distorted tone which was unintentional, but delightful. Please don't email me to let me know, ok ? Thanks.

We can discuss about the way your videos look (bit like 1970's, but I like it...), but never ever about the way you tell and teach. You are a teacher that has something to tell and give, not a showman. It's remarkable, soothing and pleasant to watch you and your unexited way of showing in comparison to all that guys that think they are a star. Great job!

I did not watch the whole video so if Cant You See by Marshall Tucker is there OK. And I cant find any other chord progression that keeps this song sounding the same, and damn I cant sing that high but love playing it.

More than a feeling is another with that falling bass line and DCG. With nuances.
Eric Zawadzki (2 months ago)
I'm a self taught guitarist who's been playing for 30 years now and what you're calling the D-C-G trick is how I've been naturally switching chords in this progression since I was a teen. I never thought of it as a "trick" rather just the easiest way to seamlessly switch between these particular chords. Also the"Hard days night G" is the only way I ever play G in a full chord form. I feel it's important to note that for certain songs you do have to play the full major chords to get the right sound but in general this "trick" is the best way to go, especially for beginners and people who don't quite have the dexterity to seamlessly switch between major chords. Mr. Bo Jangles is another nice descending bass line using this basic same chord progression. Kudos to you for giving out free instruction via social media. Sure wish there was You Tube when I was a kid but, then again having to figure things out on my own has probably made me a better player in the long run.

I see another 59-year-old below in the comments! I have been a singer all my life, occasionally for my living. I have tried and tried to play guitar and just recently bought a $200 Yamaha to try again. This video has really gotten me excited about continuing to play and actually making guitar a part of my life. Thank you!

I am 65, retired at age 61 needed something to keep my brain active, played a few chords when I was a teenager,so have not touched a guitar in 45 years, I found your lesson to be very nice and easy to follow, will take me awhile to get 1/2 decent at it all the same, I find my fingers don't want to do what my brain tells them to do.. THX

EXCELLANT
Dano1947 (2 months ago)
Van Morrison does it in the key of E. If you fret E/B at the third fret for C chord to G chord both sound richer for it.
Dano1947 (2 months ago)
By fretting the third fret of the B string, you can make G sound fuller, as well.
Dano1947 (2 months ago)
You can actually get a better fuller sound from your C chord by fretting E6 at the third fret.

Really cool stuff, I watch a lot of videos that show the guitar players using the c add 9 but I didn't know what it was, not it all makes sense. The progression with the descending base line immediately reminded me of stevie nicks leather and lace with don henley

The simple reason that D-C-G works in all its variant permutations is that D major and C major are both diatonic chords in the key of G major. Excellent video, Mr. Kehew -- I'm sure that many beginners are benefiting from your generosity.

the chord progression i hear most in pop rock is E A D been used for Cherry Cherry by Neil Diamond to Thats What I Like About You (The Romantics) R O C K in the USA (John Mellencamp) Lola (the Kinks) , On The Dark Side (Eddie and the Cruisers soundtrack) on and on and on and on and for country its E A B7 as in I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (Hank Williams Sr) Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash tho he capos on the first fret but Roy Clark does it without the capo) , Turtles All The Way Down (Sturgill Simpson), Peaceful Easy Feeling (okay rock country but still also implements an F#m briefly) by The Eagles, also the song I Swear to God by Tyler Childers and just too many more to name, F G and C are also frequently used by every genre the real trick isn't the chords themselves as much as the rhythm and vocal melody which is what keeps all those songs using the same patterns from sounding identical.anyway just my two cents, great video here.
elektron2kim (4 months ago)
It's interesting how we learn many things mirrored and not from the angle we should. Here the angle should be from behind the guitar to some extent. Another thing is that advanced guitar coaches say things like 3rd fret, 5th string so fast that nobody can catch up with 3 different in a row nor see it very well. Here the care is taken that we see it and hear it, though. It sort of make up for the mirrored factor in this particular video.

Thanks a lot Jonathan - you so are the best and the amazing thing with D,C,G, no matter what grip you do, it's clear to see how these chords are rooted into one another. With less fingering, a beginner like me can already get instant gratification & using this technique, one can concentrate on looking out for related chords throughout the fretboard. XX London
